Easter weekend sees significant crackdown on drunk driving in South Africa

This past Easter weekend, law enforcement agencies across South Africa took a significant step towards road safety, arresting over 500 drivers for driving under the influence (DUI). As the nation approaches another two consecutive long weekends—which notably coincide with many people's payday—the urgent call for attention to the threat of drunk driving remains greater than ever.
Despite the success of apprehending such a large number of unsafe drivers, the statistics starkly indicate that drunk driving continues to plague South African roads. Eugene Herbert, CEO of MasterDrive, urged policymakers and the public alike to prioritise the strategies that proved effective over the Easter weekend.
'Authorities should replicate measures taken over Easter weekend to keep these reckless drivers off the road. Additionally, as we face another two weekends where drivers are more likely to drive after drinking, the past weekend should serve as a warning that every organisation must take extremely seriously.'
The ongoing campaign to eliminate drunk driving garnered fresh momentum during a recent roundtable discussion hosted by AWARE.org. This collaborative effort saw thought leaders from various sectors, including the automotive industry, road safety organisations, and government agencies, come together to brainstorm sustainable solutions.
'Eliminating drunk driving is something MasterDrive prioritises. The organisation drives this message home through various activations that emphasise the danger of driving under the influence,' Herbert said.
One such initiative, the 'Drunk Buster Goggles,' allows participants to experience the impairments associated with alcohol consumption while behind the wheel of a motorised scooter. This eye-opening experience leaves drivers with a stark understanding of how alcohol can affect vision and reaction times, emphasising the harsh realities of driving under the influence.
This year marks a significant continuation of AWARE.org's impactful Road Safety Programme, which has already shown considerable results in its first year. Notable achievements from the previous year included:
10,618 roadblocks conducted
9,894 arrests for drunk driving
275 offenders enrolled in the NICRO rehabilitation programme, with 95% of participants not reoffending.
Memorandums of understanding established between Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), Tshwane, and eThekwini Metros.
In 2024, AWARE.org is committed to enhancing these efforts. The organisation aims to engage policymakers, industry stakeholders, and the public in fostering lasting behavioural changes that will ultimately lead to a reduction in incidents of DUI. A key component of these efforts includes advocating for a 0% alcohol approach to road use.
To support this mission, MasterDrive and other stakeholders will remain actively involved throughout the month, with several initiatives aimed at deterring drinking and driving. Their efforts will be bolstered by the JMPD, which will implement the Evidential Breath Alcohol Test (EBAT) for intoxicated drivers, a test that holds up in court. The RTMC encourages all road users to take action if they observe someone in an intoxicated state, while the Limpopo Road Safety Department calls on government and road agencies to share best practices and unify law enforcement efforts across provincial borders.

Video: Bail application postponed for Standerton man allegedly found with child porn
The bail application hearing for a man arrested after almost one million child sexual abuse images was alledly found in his possesion, has been postponed to Thursday. According to Ridge Times, the 59-year-old man looked dishevelled as he was led to the dock of the Standerton Magistrate's Court this morning. He is facing charges of possessing and distributing child pornography, one count of sexual grooming, and one count of compelled sexual assault. The latter, as defined under South African law, occurs when someone forces a third party to commit a sexual act against another person's will. The man was not asked to plead, rendering it still illegal for the media to publish the well-known resident's name. Bail hearing testimony The investigating officer, Warrant Officer Lelani de Lange from the Serial Electronic Crimes Unit, testified for the state that bail should not be granted. She described the accused as a 'pedophile', stating that a total of 954 000 images were found on hard drives. More than 59 000 images were found on one device, with the rest on other external hard drives also found in the man's possession. These included images of children being sexually abused and could also include AI images depicting child pornography. According to De Lange, the distribution charge relates to the numerous child pornography websites the man had joined. 'To be part of these sites, members are also expected to share images,' she said. She testified that this municipal employee should not be granted bail because he might interfere with a young victim; he is a danger to society as he lives next to a pre-school; and police believe the man suffers from depression and has suicidal tendencies. Defence arguments Speaking on behalf of the accused, lawyer André Moolman said there are no medical records to indicate that his client suffers from depression. He referred to the evidence in the case as insufficient and emphasised several technical issues. Moolman told the court that his client's photos were leaked to the media, causing further complications. He said his client has been married for 31 years, is well-known in the community, and could lose his employment if he is not granted bail, which would negatively affect his wife. Moolman also stated that his client suffers from scoliosis, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes. He claimed that the accused cannot sleep without his CPAP machine, which is currently not available to him. Magistrate Sabelo Tembe presided. Members of the Justice for All group picketed at outside the court as they do not want bail to be granted to the accused. Santaco denies enforcing limits on number of passengers private cars are allowed to carry
The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) is denying claims that it allegedly instructed South Africans not to use private vehicles or carry their families, labelling the reports false and misleading. This comes after the circulation of posts, including pictures and videos, alleging that taxi drivers were stopping and harassing motorists on the roads. The taxi operators were allegedly restricting private car operators from carrying their family members. In some provinces, parents and teachers are also allegedly being restricted from transporting their children to school. 'We wish to place it on record that Santaco has never issued such a communication and has never imposed any mode of transport on the public. Any individual making such claims is not, and has never been, speaking on behalf of the council,' said Santaco spokesperson Mmatshikhidi Rebecca Phala. Phala said the council strongly condemns these acts in the strongest terms. 'Like all other paid-for transport services, taxi operations are voluntary and remain a choice available to commuters. For clarity, only law enforcement authorities hold the legal mandate to enforce regulations relating to transport in South Africa. We encourage members of the public to report any incidents of harassment or unlawful enforcement directly to law enforcement agencies,' Phala said. Santaco KZN also denied the claims. 'Santaco is not a law enforcement agency and does not have authority to impose or enforce regulations on private vehicles or motorists. Santaco is a recognised structure, as affirmed by the 2020 National Taxi Lekgotla, mandated to oversee and co-ordinate affiliated taxi structures.
