BioHarvest In Vitro Testing Shows Proprietary Olive Cell Compound Reduces Fat Accumulation in Liver Cells

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) Affects 30-40% of U.S. Adults, Driving Significant Market Need for BioHarvest's Future Olive Cell Product Targeting Liver Health
Vancouver, British Columbia and Rehovot, Israel--(Newsfile Corp. - March 4, 2025) - BioHarvest Sciences Inc. (NASDAQ: BHST) (FSE: 8MV0) ('BioHarvest' or 'the Company'), a company pioneering its patented Botanical Synthesis technology process, today announced new 'in vitro' test results for the Company's proprietary new Olive Cell compound, which showed reduced fat accumulation in human liver cells. Fat accumulation in the liver is a leading cause of non-alcohol fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which affects 30-40% of U.S. adults*. BioHarvest demonstrated that in human hepatic (liver) cells, the Olive Cell compound mitigated fat accumulation in a liver steatosis model as well as in experimental models of liver fibrosis. In addition, the Olive Cell compound also succeeded in reducing the level of collagen type 1 in XL-2 cells in an in-vitro fibrosis model.
The Company attributes the positive test results of reducing fat accumulation in liver cells to the high levels of Verbascoside (a plant-derived polyphenol with known anti-inflammatory properties that has been researched for a variety of effects on the liver) in BioHarvest's Olive Cell compound. Hepatic fat accumulation can progress from simple NAFLD to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) which includes hepatocellular injury, inflammation, and fibrosis. In more severe cases, complications such as liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma may arise. NASH, the more severe form of NAFLD, affects 3-5% of US adult population.
There are currently limited FDA-approved drugs specifically for NAFLD. Based on these results and additional studies to be conducted in 2025, the Company expects to begin selling the Olive Cell product in 2026 as a nutraceutical product, while continuing to explore the potential of partnering with a pharmaceutical company to provide the olive cell composition via a different regulatory path as part of its CDMO model.
The Company anticipates that this Olive Cell product will contain the highest levels of Verbascoside produced from olives in the global market. This unique compound was analyzed by Professor Maurizio Servili from University of Perugia, Italy, a leading worldwide expert of olive polyphenols.
BioHarvest's Botanical Synthesis platform elicits and magnifies plant-produced molecules like Verbascoside and produces them in non-GMO plant cells at industrial scale. The Olive product will join VINIA® as part of the Company's portfolio. VINIA®, a grape cell product that is high in Piceid Resveratrol, has been clinically shown to significantly dilate arteries, resulting in increased blood flow. The Company recently announced that VINIA® had surpassed $50M USD in sales, with over 50,000 active subscribers.
'Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease impacts over 100 million Americans, and as part of our mission to develop life-changing compounds from plants, we believe our Olive Cell Product will have the capacity to be a next-generation therapeutic solution for improving liver health in millions of American consumers,' said Ilan Sobel, CEO of BioHarvest. 'This product will be accretive to our nutraceuticals portfolio and will allow us to realize significant marketing and sales synergies with VINIA®, which has already over 50,000 active subscribers today.'
'in vitro' Testing Details
In these BioHarvest tests, 'in vitro' models on human hepatic cells demonstrated that the Olive Cell compound mitigated fat accumulation in a liver steatosis model as well as in experimental models of liver fibrosis. The tests were conducted using an in-vitro model of Oleic acid (OA)-induced lipid accumulation in HepG2 cells, which is commonly used as a model for studying NAFLD. In addition to mitigating lipid accumulation in the liver steatosis model, the Olive Cell compound also succeeded in reducing the level of collagen type 1 in XL-2 cells in an in-vitro fibrosis model.

Bavarian Nordic Initiates Phase 3 Study of Chikungunya Vaccine in Children

First children vaccinated in clinical study seeking to expand the target population for the chikungunya vaccine. COPENHAGEN, Denmark, June 12, 2025 – Bavarian Nordic A/S (OMX: BAVA) announced today the initiation of a Phase 3 clinical study of its single-dose, virus-like particle (VLP) chikungunya vaccine, CHIKV VLP in children 2 to 11 years of age. This first trial of CHIKV VLP in a pediatric population aims to expand the target population for the vaccine, currently approved for persons 12 years of age and older in the US, EU and United Kingdom under the trade name VIMKUNYA®. The global, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study (NCT07003984), sponsored by Bavarian Nordic, will evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of CHIK VLP vaccine in 720 children 2 to 11 years of age for two years. Primary results from the study are anticipated in the first half of 2028. Paul Chaplin, President & CEO of Bavarian Nordic, said: 'Upon the successful approvals earlier this year of our chikungunya vaccine for persons aged 12 and older, we are pleased to initiate this Phase 3 study in children for whom there are currently no vaccines available to prevent against chikungunya. This study represents a significant part of our commitment to the further development of the vaccine to help ensure access for people of all ages.' About VIMKUNYA® Chikungunya vaccine (recombinant, adsorbed) VIMKUNYA (CHIKV VLP) is the first and only virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine for the prevention of chikungunya disease in individuals aged 12 years and above. It is designed to induce a robust seroresponse, with protective immunity starting to develop as early as 1 week after vaccination. VIMKUNYA is the only single-dose vaccine against chikungunya disease available in a prefilled syringe. VIMKUNYA does not contain viral genetic material and is therefore non-infectious and unable to cause disease, ensuring a broad range of people can benefit from vaccination. The vaccine was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Commission in February 20251,2 and the United Kingdom in May 20253. The US, EU and UK approvals of VIMKUNYA (CHIKV VLP vaccine) were all based on results from two phase 3 clinical trials which enrolled more than 3,500 healthy individuals 12 years of age and older. The studies met their primary endpoints, with results showing that 21 days after vaccination, the vaccine induced neutralizing antibodies in up to 97.8% of the vaccinated individuals, (97.8% in individuals 12 years to 64 and 87.3% in over 65-year-olds). The key secondary endpoint of seroresponse rate at day 8 post vaccination was 46.6% and 96.8% at day 15 in the 12–64-year-old population and 82.3% at day 15 for the over 65 population. The vaccine was well-tolerated and vaccine-related adverse events were mainly mild or moderate in nature. The most common side effects were pain at the injection site, fatigue, headache, and muscle pain4,5. About chikungunya Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne disease caused by the chikungunya virus (CHIKV). In the past 20 years, the virus has emerged across several regions in Asia, Africa, and the Americas, including many popular travel destinations, often causing large unpredictable outbreaks. Since its discovery, CHIKV has been identified in more than 110 countries, with evidence of transmission confirmed in more than 50 countries over the past five years6. Chikungunya typically presents with acute symptoms, including fever, rash, fatigue, headache, and often severe and incapacitating joint pain. Most patients recover within 1-2 weeks, but 30-40% of those affected may develop chronic arthritis that can last for months or even years7. In 2024, 620,000 cases of chikungunya and over 200 deaths were reported worldwide8. Recent data suggest that chikungunya is severely underreported and often misdiagnosed as dengue fever due to a similar symptom profile9. Editas Medicine Reports Proprietary Targeted Lipid Nanoparticle Delivery in Non-Human Primates Enables In Vivo HBG1/2 Promoter Editing for Sickle Cell Disease and Beta Thalassemia at the European Hematology Association 2025 Congress in June

Achieved 58% mean editing at five months after a single dose using high efficiency HSC delivery, demonstrating therapeutically relevant editing levels using a clinically validated strategy. Achievement supports development of a novel, in vivo approach to treating sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia. CAMBRIDGE, Mass., June 12, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Editas Medicine, Inc. (Nasdaq: EDIT), a pioneering gene editing company, today shared new in vivo data demonstrating therapeutically relevant levels of HBG1/2 promoter editing in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) with a single dose of proprietary targeted lipid nanoparticle (tLNP) in non-human primates (NHPs). This clinically validated approach targeting HBG1/2 promoters to upregulate fetal hemoglobin (HbF) is in pre-clinical development as a potential transformative in vivo gene editing medicine for the treatment of sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia. The Company reported these data in a presentation available today and will detail the data in a poster session on Saturday, June 14th 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. CEST (12:30 – 1:30 p.m. EDT) at the European Hematology Association (EHA) 2025 Congress in Milan, Italy. In this study, the Company's proprietary tLNP formulation delivered HBG1/2 promoter editing cargo to HSCs in NHPs. Latest data from this ongoing NHP study showed that at five months a single intravenous administration of Editas' tLNP resulted in mean on-target editing levels in the HBG1/2 promoter region of 58% in HSCs: well exceeding the predicted editing threshold of ≥25% required for therapeutic benefit. In addition to achieving therapeutically relevant editing levels, the biodistribution data in NHPs with Editas' tLNP continue to show significant de-targeting of the liver in contrast to standard LNPs. 'These data from our in vivo HSC program confirm our ability to achieve high efficiency delivery, therapeutically relevant editing levels and favorable biodistribution in NHPs. These data validate the further development of Editas' proprietary HSC-tLNP for editing of the HBG1/2 promoters for the treatment of sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia,' said Linda C. Burkly, Ph.D., Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer, Editas Medicine. Editas Medicine's in vivo HSC program targets HBG1/2 promoters to mimic naturally occurring mechanisms of hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin (HPFH) and utilizes proprietary AsCas12a to edit with high efficiency and minimize off-target editing. Editing the HBG1/2 promoters with AsCas12a with the investigational medicine reni-cel led to robust increases in HbF and total hemoglobin (Hb) in clinical trials. The presentation details are listed below. Abstracts can be accessed on the EHA website , and the presentation will be posted on the Editas Medicine website during the conference.
