Stars Talk L.A Wildfires, Home Rebuilds and What to Do With Your Tesla at EMA Impact Summit

Yahoo09-05-2025

The Environmental Media Association kicked off its ninth annual Impact Summit on Thursday, rolling out a two-day lineup of stars and activists for wide-ranging conversations about the environment.
A large focus of the summit's first day was discussing the aftermath of the Los Angeles wildfires that devastated the Pacific Palisades and Altadena areas earlier this year. Jenna Dewan led a conversation about philanthropy and how the city banded together after the fires, while Property Brothers star Drew Scott moderated a panel about rebuilding homes in the destroyed areas.

'You're rooted in your home, it's your memories, it's everything in your life. It's where you wake up every morning, go to bed every night and it affects every aspect of your life, whether it's work or relationships,' Scott told the audience at the Pendry West Hollywood. 'And we've had that ripped away from us, a lot of families did here in January.'
Ben Stapleton, executive director for the U.S. Green Building Council – Los Angeles, noted how 'the world is watching us and seeing as Americans, as Angelenos, how do we respond to the tragedy? How do we do this in a way where we come together? Can we rebuild at scale in a way that can be more resilient and be more sustainable, and can we have a different narrative that the world can come see here for the Olympics, for other events, than what they're seeing coming out of the U.S. right now?'
Stapleton continued that immediately after the fire, he was getting flooded with emails and calls from people who lost their homes saying they wanted to rebuild in an environmental way; going with electric over gas was one such suggestion for how to do that.
Of choosing to rebuild with the planet in mind, he added, 'it's going to reduce our utility bills long term, it's going to reduce the air pollution in our homes, which is going to reduce our health care costs. The reason we rebuild green is because it's healthier. And ideally, people are getting these homes they don't even know it's green, it's just cheaper, faster, easier. And so we're launching a group purchasing platform to help drive down some of that cost for folks to get access to some of those sustainable materials. We're trying to do the things that we can to help meet people where they're at, including contractor training. People need to know how to rebuild the right way.'
Scott also called out contractors who are telling people they need to rebuild with steel, concrete and materials where 'it's basically going to be four times the cost to build your home back. These are people who didn't have the money — they didn't have the insurance or they were underinsured, they can't even afford the build back, let alone something's going to cost four times. You don't need all of that. What you need is the envelope to be more fire retardant. We don't need the old vents that all these old houses have, we don't need exposed eaves especially with your neighbors five feet away. It's going to spread really fast if you have those issues.'
Ed Begley Jr., Miranda Cosgrove, Malin Ackerman, Daniella Pineda and Peyton List also took part in conversations throughout the day, and Phil Rosenthal recorded a live version of his Naked Lunch podcast with Kevin Nealon. During the conversation, the pair touched on what to do with their Teslas given Elon Musk's current role in the Trump administration.
'I bought mine in 2012 when it first came out. Why? To protect the environment. Now, do I get rid of that car in solidarity with people who are against what he's doing to the country? Or do I keep that car because it's better for the environment than a gas car?' Rosenthal asked the audience of activists, as several suggested it was best to keep the car.
'I think I'm doing my part by keeping a car from 2012 in the first place, right? I'm not buying a new car, by the way, the tariffs are going to make it terrible for me to buy another car,' he continued, as Nealon deadpanned, 'I have a Tesla, but I am so opposed to Elon it's in the shop now. We're having a gas engine put in it.' Another audience member suggested to put a bumper sticker on the car that would disavow Musk while still keeping the Tesla.
'Now, does that keep the mob from dragging me out of my car and beating me up? It does? So that's all I need, everything's fine,' Rosenthal responded, joking, 'Is this the problem with you people, is that you think a bumper sticker is going to fix the world?'
Eli Roth, Sosie Bacon, Lance Bass, Nikki Reed and Jesse Metcalfe are among those taking part in the second day of the summit, sponsored by Toyota.

Sneaky French Goose Makes Off With McDonald's Meal Like It's the Ultimate Prize

Sneaky French Goose Makes Off With McDonald's Meal Like It's the Ultimate Prize originally appeared on PetHelpful. Whether they care to admit it or not, just about everyone loves fast food. So, is it really any surprise that this is also true of our animal counterparts? Not really. And even in a place like France, which is renowned for its world-class fine dining culture, people, and as you will see in this video, animals, are not above enjoying the simple pleasures of a meal from American fast food titan McDonald's. However, we think that the French goose in this video more than just 'enjoys' McDonald's. Otherwise, why would he bother to steal someone's McDonald's meal and then try to get away with it like he just stole a Mega Millions winning lotto ticket? As this bizarre, and quite frankly, hilarious video shows, McDonald's is hard to resist. Deep in the suburbs of northern Paris, a man, Calvin Moreau, was just trying to enjoy his happy meal when he started recording a goose waddling towards him to seemingly investigate what was in his McDonald's to this video's comments section, Mr. Moreau attempted to talk to the bird in French as he grew suspicious that the bird had nefarious intentions regarding the contents of his McDonald's bag. According to the video, Mr. Moreau told the thieving bird, 'Stop that. Just because you're bigger doesn't mean you're smarter!' The next thing the Frenchmen knew, the bird had taken off with the paper McDonald's bag wrapped around their neck. This video had many people wondering: Can birds eat French fries? It's a good question. After all, these salty, delicious snacks are a favorite of many people all over the world. And a lot of people do enjoy feeding birds. So, why not give them French fries? Obviously, it's easy to give a bird a French fry, and it's just as easy for them to scarf it down. But is it actually good for them? The truth is, yes and no. French fries are not toxic to birds per se because they are mainly composed of carbohydrates and do contain some vitamins and minerals. However, French fries, especially McDonald's French fries, contain a lot of sodium and preservatives, which are detrimental to many animals', including birds, digestive systems. As such, if you see a bird approaching your bag of McDonald's, you should keep it away from them at all costs. Looking for more PetHelpful updates? Follow us on YouTube for more entertaining videos. Jane Birkin's Hermes bag is going to auction at Sotheby's

The original Hermès Birkin bag, once worn by the late actor and singer Jane Birkin, is heading to auction at Sotheby's this summer. The leather handbag inspired what would be become one of the world's most desired, hard to acquire and priciest fashion accessories. While the auction house resells a range of secondhand Birkin bags, ranging in price from $5,000 to $220,000, there's only one original. "No handbag in the world carries as much cultural significance as the Hermès Birkin. But before it became the ultimate symbol of luxury, the Birkin was born out of necessity — crafted specifically for Jane Birkin herself," Sotheby's said in a statement Thursday announcing the auction. Jane Birkin is pictured with her namesake bag, which is set to go up for auction at Sotheby's this summer. Mike Daines / Shutterstock The original Hermès Birkin bag, which differs slightly form the model sold today, is on item in Sotheby's Fashion Icons auction, which takes place in Paris from June 26 to July 10. In the meantime, the original bag, which belongs to a private collector, will be on display in at the auction house's New York headquarters from June 6 to June 12. Chance encounter Birkin, who died in 2023 at age 76, was known for her artistry and style. In addition to her songs, including recordings with celebrated singer Serge Gainsbourg, she appeared in classic films including Michelangelo Antonioni's 1966 "Blow-Up." She was also admired for her political activism, capaigning for Myanmar's pro-democracy movement and the fight against AIDS, among other causes. "Jane Birkin was a French icon because she was the incarnation of freedom, sang the most beautiful words of our language," French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on social media when she died. An errant remark from Birkin to Jean-Louis Dumas, then the head of Hermès, on an Air France flight in 1984 spawned the creation of the Birkin bag, according to Sotheby's. At the time, Birkin complained she couldn't find a bag big enough to accommodate her belongings for daily use. Dumas quickly sketched a bag that he would go on to make, and later name, for her. The bag is now made in a variety of colorways, leather types and sizes based on the prototype Dumas made for the singer. But "the Original Birkin bag is a true one-of-a-kind — a singular piece of fashion history that has grown into a pop culture phenomenon that signals luxury in the most refined way possible," Morgane Halimi, Sotheby's global head of handbags and fashion, said in a statement. Costly, not expensive? Sotheby's has not indicated how much the bag could fetch. A spokesperson for the auction house told CBS MoneyWatch it will provide an estimate to interested parties upon request, noting the bag's exceptional provenance. By comparison, Sotheby's sold Princess Diana's historic black sheep sweater in 2023 for $1.1 million, 14 times its estimate of $80,000. In December, Hermès artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas, told "60 Minutes" that the fashion house's leather goods, including the Birkin bag, are as costly as they are because the company refuses to compromise on quality or craftsmanship. He also disputed the notion that Hermès goods are "expensive," while conceding hey are "costly" to make. "The cost is the actual price of making an object properly with the required level of attention, so that you have an object of quality," Dumas told 60 Minutes in the interview. "Expensive is a product which is not delivering what it's supposed to deliver, but you've paid quite a large amount of money for it, then it betrays you. That's expensive." Customers have accused Hermès of deliberately limiting production of Birkin bags, a notion Dumas dismissed as a "diabolical marketing idea" that the company does not employ. Rather, he insisted, the company can't keep up with the enduring demand for the Birkin bag, while only a few craftspeople are trained to make the item.. "Whatever we have, we put on the shelf and it goes," he said.

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors The "John Wick" series is one of the most beloved modern action franchises, with four films grossing over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. With incredible action sequences, fascinating world-building, and an iconic lead in Keanu Reeves, "John Wick" has become the standard for any action film today. More Entertainment: Five Nights at Freddy's 2 – Everything We Know, Trailer, Release Date However, not every part of the franchise was a hit. The spin-off Peacock series "The Continental: From the World of John Wick" had a lukewarm reception and was not renewed for a second season. Most fans point to the spin-off missing creator Derek Kolsted and director Chad Stahelski as a major reason for it falling short of expectations. And it seems that Stahelski agrees. Keanu Reeves has played assassin John Wick in four mainline movies. He's set to reprise his role in spinoff Ballerina. Keanu Reeves has played assassin John Wick in four mainline movies. He's set to reprise his role in spinoff Ballerina. Lionsgate Films In an interview with James Hibberd of The Hollywood Reporter, Stahelski revealed that he and star Keanu Reeves were largely ignored during the production of "The Continental." "Keanu and I were — I wouldn't say sidelined, but our opinion was heard and not really noted," Stahelski said. "[The studio] tried to convince me they knew what they were doing. A group of individuals thought they had the magic sauce. Chad Stahelski comes out guns blazing in our Q&A about his studio battles, the action industry and all things #JohnWick — from this week's #BallerinaMovie to 'Wick 5' and what happened with 'The Continental': "I'm not trying to be an anarchist" — The Hollywood Reporter (@THR) June 5, 2025 "But if you take out Basil Iwanyk's producing intuitiveness, if you take out Keanu's way of delivering quirky dialogue and if you take out all the visuals I have in my head from Wong Kar-wai, anime, Leone, Bernardo Bertucci or Andrei Tchaikovsky ... then it's not the same thing. "They thought this was as easy as using anamorphic lenses, do a kooky hotel, put in weird dialogue, and insert crime drama." More Entertainment: 'Wicked' Star Cynthia Erivo Calls Out Critics of Her New Role "If you saw our process, you'd be like, 'You're telling me this billion dollar franchise does it this way?'" Stahelski continued. "I'm scouting my next film in London and we saw a cool location yesterday which totally changed the second act. We rewrote the whole thing. I find great cast members and rewrite their parts constantly. "That's what makes [the movies] so good and organic — we're constantly upgrading. But the studio likes to know what they're getting for their buck and want to lock a script for budget reasons. While we're saying, 'Just write the check, we'll see you at the finish line.'" More Entertainment: The Accountant 2 Gets New Digital Release Date – How To Watch This seems to be the case for the newest film in the franchise, "From the World of John Wick: Ballerina," starring Ana De Armas. Opening in theaters on June 6, "Ballerina" is already receiving critical praise for doing what the previous films did so well. And it's likely that the upcoming "Caine", based on Donny Yen's fan-favorite character, will do the same. In the end, it seems that if there's a formula that results in making a franchise the best in its genre, you probably shouldn't mess with it.
