Four Women Dead, Five Seriously Injured in Crash Near Agadir
Doha – A deadly traffic accident in Sebt El Guerdane – a town off the Taroudant-Agadir expressway approximately 20 kilometers from Taroudant – killed four women and seriously injured five others, the Attorney General of the Court of Appeal in Agadir reported on Monday.
The tragic incident occurred when a tire blew out on a pickup truck carrying 14 women agricultural workers. The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to collide with an oncoming car traveling in the opposite direction.
Six others, including both drivers, suffered minor injuries in the crash.
The Public Prosecutor's Office has launched a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident and establish legal responsibilities.
Shocking weekly road safety statistics
This incident comes amid alarming nationwide road safety statistics. From May 12-18, Morocco recorded 31 fatalities and 2,939 injuries — including 102 critical cases — resulting from 2,145 traffic accidents in urban areas alone, according to local media reports.
Moroccan security services documented 48,614 traffic violations during this period, issuing 7,656 reports that were subsequently referred to the Public Prosecutor's Office. Authorities collected 40,958 on-the-spot fines, totaling approximately MAD 9 million ($900,000) in penalties.
In enforcement actions, 4,747 vehicles were impounded, 7,656 documents were confiscated, and 553 vehicles were ordered off the road.
Local media sources indicate that weekly urban road accident figures have been steadily increasing since the beginning of 2025. The final week of April saw 19 deaths and over 3,000 injuries, including 133 serious cases.
May's statistics show a disturbing upward trend, with fatalities increasing by 12 deaths compared to April's figures. Tags: road accident in Morocco

Saad Lamjarred Returns to Court in France Over Rape Conviction
Rabat – Moroccan pop star Saad Lamjarred is once again facing French justice. On Monday, he appeared before the Val-de-Marne Court of Appeal to contest a rape conviction handed down in 2023. The court in Créteil is expected to announce its verdict by Friday. The case stems from an incident in October 2016, when a 20-year-old woman accused Lamjarred of raping and striking her in a Paris hotel room. They had met earlier that night in a nightclub. The Paris Assize Court found him guilty and sentenced him to six years. Lamjarred, now 40, walked into the courtroom as a free man under judicial supervision. He continues to deny any non-consensual act. He admitted to pushing the woman in the face but claimed he did so only because she scratched him while they were kissing. He has always insisted there was no sexual relationship. This week's trial marks more than another legal step for the young woman at the heart of the case. 'This new trial means everything,' said her lawyers, Victorien de Faria and David Chemmi, in a statement to AFP. 'It's about finally achieving justice after nearly a decade.' They described the process as exhausting. 'The Paris court recognized the rape and sentenced Lamjarred. He appealed. Now, nine years after the events, our client must go through this ordeal once more,' they said. The singer's legal team has remained silent in the lead-up to the trial. His lawyers, Zoé Royaux and Christian Saint-Palais, declined to respond to media inquiries. Lamjarred's legal troubles extend beyond this case. In the southern French town of Draguignan, he is expected to stand trial for a similar allegation dating back to 2018 in Saint-Tropez. No date has been set yet. Past accusations in New York and Casablanca also echo similar circumstances, though those cases never reached trial. Despite the growing number of allegations, Lamjarred continues to enjoy enormous popularity. Yet, for many observers, his fame now stands in uneasy contrast with the serious nature of the accusations that continue to follow him. Tags: Lamjarred rape caserapeSaad Lamjarred

Sahara : Moroccan drone strikes Polisario vehicles
On Thursday afternoon, May 29, a drone from the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) targeted and destroyed vehicles belonging to the Polisario. «The strike took place near Mijek, east of the Sand Wall, at the border with Mauritania. It is still too early to determine the exact number of casualties among members of the Front's militias. The vehicles were completely destroyed», a Moroccan security source told Yabiladi. Meanwhile, Polisario-affiliated media offered a different version of events, claiming that the Moroccan Air Force drone strike «killed Mauritanian civilians who were searching for gold». The Mauritanian press, particularly outlets based in the Zouerate region, has not yet reported on the incident. Typically, they are the first to cover FAR drone strikes when Mauritanian gold prospectors are affected, often providing the names of the victims. This was the case following the May 16 strike in the locality of Karzaze.

Two Jamaican tourists killed in Agadir car crash, driver detained
Two Jamaican tourists died on Sunday from severe injuries sustained in a traffic accident at the intersection of Al-Muqawama and 2 Mars Streets in Agadir. They passed away after being transferred to the Hassan II Regional Hospital Center. According to consistent reports, the accident occurred when the driver of a foreign-registered light vehicle lost control of the car, which then crashed into a tree. The vehicle was carrying six passengers, including two Moroccan citizens. The driver is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. Three other people—two tourists and one Moroccan—were also injured, with varying degrees of severity. They were taken to a private clinic, where two of them were placed in intensive care. The Agadir Security Directorate's traffic accident division responded to the scene and launched an investigation into the circumstances of the crash. Meanwhile, the public prosecutor ordered the driver—a British national of Pakistani origin—to be placed in judicial custody. Authorities have also coordinated with the Jamaican Embassy in Morocco to arrange the repatriation of the victims' bodies.
