Maghi Ganesh mandals await HC order on PoP idols to determine visarjan date
Mumbai: Over three months since
Maghi Ganeshotsav
ended Feb 11, two tall Ganpati idols carved from plaster of paris (PoP) continue to remain in their pandals in Kandivli, face covered, awaiting immersion. The mandals now plan to perform visarjan "within a few days" if a PIL in
Bombay High court
is decided in their favour June 9.
The Kandivli Cha Shree mandal had led a visarjan yatra Feb 11 but brought its idol back to the pandal. The other organiser Charkop Cha Raja too retained its idol. In the wake of PIL filed by activist Rohit Joshi from Thane, the Bombay high court had "prohibited manufacture, sale and immersion of
PoP idols
."
The mandals declined to do so in artificial tanks built by BMC for this purpose
Sagar Bamnolikar, treasurer of Kandivli Cha Shree said Monday, "We are keen to immerse our idol within a few days.
Firstly the monsoon is scheduled to arrive earlier than usual this year. Secondly the Bombay high court will pronounce judgement in the PIL on June 9. If it is decided in our favour, we may conduct visarjan on June 10."
The Shree's mandal is still keen to head to Marve seafront for immersion as they do each year despite the HC ban and BMC strictures. On Monday, thousands of devotees were being amassed via social media for the visarjan yatra in a show of strength.
Nikhil Gudhekar, president of Charkop Cha Raja said, "Both mandals are working together to determine the
visarjan date
. However, if the HC verdict does not permit us to immerse in the sea, we will keep the idol and reuse it the following year. That is the custom observed by Ganesh mandals in Pune which we will emulate."
Mandals are reluctant to utilise the BMC's artificial tanks which they say are "small and inadequate for large idols spanning 10-15 ft as theirs".
"We have noticed civic workers using JCBs to extract fragments afterwards, which hurts our sentiments," one organiser said.
Interestingly, Ganesh mandals claim that PoP idols of Goddess Durga were allowed to be immersed during Chaitra Navratra. "Neither police nor civic authorities stopped them. These include the idols of mandals led by politicians Eknath Shinde, Pratap Sarnaik and Rajan Vichare in Thane," they said.
The 10-day Ganeshotsav of Bhadrapad which comes up Aug 27 will be a litmus test. Leading PoP moortikar Siddhesh Dighole will open his workshop in Parel Tuesday. "I must start work in order to cater to outstation orders. I will begin crafting local orders once the high court gives its verdict on the PoP matter June 9. I am purchasing material and hoping that the investment does not go to waste."

Blaze at power pole triggers VVIP security alert in Bhopal
On Monday morning, a fire erupted at an electricity pole situated on Link Road 1 in Bhopal, causing a brief alarm in the high-security VVIP area. According to Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) fire brigade personnel at the scene, the incident occurred at around 11 am, with a short circuit suspected as the cause. Visible smoke from the pole caught the attention of passersby and residents. A fire engine from Pul Bogda fire station responded swiftly and contained the flames quickly. No one was hurt in the incident. At the site, power discom engineer Rishi Tiwari confirmed that the distribution box at the base had ignited. The fire brigade used water to extinguish the electrical fire, despite this being typically inadvisable due to electrocution risks and potential additional short circuits. Standard practice recommends foam, dry chemical powder (such as ABC or CO₂ extinguishers) or specialised fire suppression agents for electrical fires, as these substances do not conduct electricity. The fire occurred near "Mama Ka Ghar," the residence of former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and present Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, raising security concerns in this politically significant location. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 마지막으로 2025년 최고의 좀비 게임을 무료로 즐기세요 경복의 바다 게임 플레이 Undo The fire was quickly controlled, but its effects caused prolonged disruption. Power distribution company staff remained on-site, with repairs anticipated to continue until evening. Link Road 1 experienced temporary power cuts, and questions about electrical infrastructure safety have emerged again. This occurrence comes at a time when local authorities are dealing with seasonal challenges including monsoon preparation and urban infrastructure pressures. Authorities have committed to undertaking a technical evaluation of the pole and surrounding network to avert such incidents in the future.

Ward formation deadline postponed by a month
Jun 24, 2025 08:24 AM IST Mumbai: The state government on Monday postponed the deadline for formation of wards under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and other civic bodies in Maharashtra by a month, from September 4 to October 6. The revised deadline indicates that polls to the BMC and other civic bodies would be held after Diwali, which will be celebrated from October 18 till October 23, said officials. Only one representative from each ward would be elected to the 227-member BMC while all other municipal corporations in the state would have four elected members per ward (Hindustan Times) The order specifying the change in deadline and revised timetable was issued by the urban development department. According to the order, commissioners of civic bodies including the BMC and other municipal corporations under classes A, B and C – which include civic bodies in the MMR and metro cities like Pune, Nashik and Nagpur – would have to submit draft ward formation details to the urban development department from September 9-15, and issue the notification demarcating wards between October 3-6, following a nod from the state election commission. Municipal corporations under class D would have to issue the final ward notification between October 9-13, whereas municipal councils would have to do so between September 26-30. The state election commission said it had no role in preparing the revised timetable. All municipal corporations in the state have been functioning without elected bodies since January 1, 2024 or earlier, after the term of former corporators expired. Elections to local bodies were delayed, first due to the Covid-19 pandemic, followed by a dispute over ward formation between the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and the Mahayuti. Earlier, on June 10, the state government had ordered the BMC to prepare the draft ward formation list and said that only one representative from each ward would be elected to the 227-seat civic body. All other municipal corporations in the state would have four elected members per ward, the government had clarified, bringing back the policy of multiple representatives per ward after a hiatus of a few years. The population as per the 2011 census would be considered for ward formation, the government had said.

From the outset of the crisis, I have repeatedly condemned any military escalation in the Middle East."
