Scottish spot named one of the best seaside towns in the UK

The National29-04-2025
North Berwick in East Lothian was named alongside locations across the country, including Weymouth and Penzance.
Introducing the ranking, the prestigious travel magazine said that while many seaside towns went into decline at the turn of the century, a number of these spots are starting to make a comeback.
It added that this "resurgence" has been driven by a complex web of influences, including the cost-of-living crisis and climate-conscious travel.

North Berwick, which was the only seaside town in Scotland named by National Geographic, was praised for its Fringe by the Sea festival and amazing foodie spots.
Discussing the East Lothian town, the publication said that like other coastal resorts, the location endured a choppy few decades at the close of the 20th century as its "Biarritz of the North" epithet slipped.
However, in the years since, the town has rebounded and been "lauded" for its long sandy beaches and "nation-leading" living standards.
The magazine went to highlight the Fringe by the Sea festival, an annual event featuring comedy, live music and culinary masterclasses.

Another big draw is the Scottish Seabird Centre, a great place to learn about the gannets that reside on the famous Bass Rock.
The town also has a "well-deserved" foodie reputation thanks to harbour-front eateries like the Lobster Shack, which serves all kinds of seafood like crab rolls and smoked haddock.
There is also Drift, a "cliff-edge medley of upcycled shipping containers with rousing Firth of Forth views and an indecently good brunch."

'Entitled' family's brazen lie to swap business class seat backfires

'Entitled' family's brazen lie to swap business class seat backfires One holidaymaker revealed the lengths a mother and son went to in order to get a free upgrade – while being the unfortunate victim of their act A mother and her son tried their luck at blagging a free upgrade (stock image) (Image: Antonio Suarez via Getty Images) When it comes to air travel, everyone has their own seating preferences with many flyers favouring the window seat. The aisle seat is frequently the second choice while the middle seat remains the least popular, particularly when sandwiched between strangers. ‌ Airlines typically provide four main cabin classes on aircraft, with economy usually being the most budget-friendly and basic option while business and first class command higher prices to offer travellers enhanced comfort and additional benefits. ‌ A passenger who purchased a business class ticket while travelling with Lufthansa encountered an uncomfortable scenario when a mother and son from economy attempted to deceive their way into a seat swap. ‌ The traveller shared their experience on Reddit, explaining they had selected business class specifically because it guaranteed the middle seat would remain vacant. They mentioned that the other passenger in the aisle seat was a gentleman aged between 40 and 50, and his wife and son approached asking if they could exchange their economy seats to sit beside the man. The Reddit user continued: "His wife and son came in, asking me to switch (business for economy) so they could all sit there, then telling me that if I didn't switch with the wife, the son would sit in the middle at least, reasoning that I didn't need an empty seat next to me and claiming the stewardess allowed it." ‌ "Turned out, she said it was possible if the other passenger agreed to which they replied that I was a family, so I would 100% agree." After hearing this blatant untruth, the passenger refused to relinquish their seat, resulting in the son and wife remaining in economy class while the father "spent almost 4 hours muttering passive-aggressive comments". The Reddit user expressed gratitude towards the flight attendants for maintaining their professionalism, noting that a second attendant had to intervene when the mother and son "refused to go back to their seats". ‌ The Reddit post garnered over 6,100 likes and more than 100 comments. One commenter noted: "Lol he didn't give up his seat for his family, just wanted you to." Another responded: "It's wild how some people feel entitled to what others paid extra for. Lying about being your family? That's next-level manipulative. You had every right to your seat and your space. Props to you for standing your ground, and huge respect to the flight attendants for backing you up." A third added: "Omg lying abt [about] being ur [your] fam [family] is wild. If they'll fake that, imagine what else they pull daily." A fourth remarked: "Imagine lying to the crew about being my family to steal my business class seat... then getting mad when I don't agree to the scam. I paid for that space, not to babysit someone else's travel drama." Problem solved."

Flight attendant issues warning over viral seatbelt ‘hack'

Sophie-May Williams Published August 20, 2025 4:02pm Link is copied Comments TikTok — and social media in general — are full of trends. Especially travel ones. While some can be useful (hello stuffing your neck pillow with extra clothes to avoid paying extortionate bag fees), others can actually be dangerous. Cue the viral 'seatbelt' trend. Many avid TikTokkers will have seen videos of people trying out the hack, which has been touted as an ingenious way to help you sleep on a long flight. But now, flight attendants are hitting back in a bid to depopularise the trend — and warn travellers about the serious risks it can pose (Picture: Getty Images) The seatbelt trend is a TikTok travel hack that promises plane passengers a comfortable sleeping position in their confined space. When settled in your assigned seat, the idea is to raise your knees to your chest and place your feet together on the seat. You then secure the seatbelt around your ankles so that your legs don't slide back down towards the ground, and your feet stay in place. Travellers says this position then allows you to rest your head on your knees and get some quality shut-eye (Picture: @zoreandtomek) Since first appearing on TikTok well over a year ago, influencers and non-influencers have called it 'game-changing,' with thousands videoing themselves mid-flight to convince other travellers to try. So, considering many people have shared positive reviews of the hack, why are travel experts so against the trend? (Picture: @zoreandtomek) Cher, a Dallas Fort Worth International Airport flight attendant, recently posted a video explaining why the trend is dangerous. Accompanied by a caption that reads: 'pls pls pls do not do this trend for your own safety,' plus a title saying: 'Why this trend is life threatening from a flight attendant', it's clear she's on a mission to educate people on flight safety (Picture: Getty Images) Cher began the video talking about an incident that happened on a flight where 50 people were injured due to turbulence — an irregular or chaotic air movement that can cause a plane to shake — and where one person suffered serious injuries. With more than five years of experience in the industry, she says can recall incidents of people breaking their spines, needing prosthetic front teeth, and breaking both of their legs as a result of turbulence (Picture: Getty Images) While pilots and flight attendants can warn passengers of incoming turbulence, it's not always possible to share how strong it might be. Similarly, Cher noted that sometimes, they won't know that they're about to experience turbulence until it's actually happening. 'It really can come out of nowhere,' she said in the video. Which is why it's often advised for people to wear their seatbelts properly, and if possible, at all times, despite the seatbelt sign being turned off (Picture: Getty Images) Cher said that turbulence is more likely to happen in the middle of flight when you are getting up to stretch your legs, use the facilities, or find a comfier position to take a nap. 'So, if you are wearing your seatbelt incorrectly,' for example, mirroring the trend, 'you could look at breaking your ankles or your hips.' Cher then compared wearing a seatbelt in this manner in a car, and having all of your weight go forwards or upwards and then down. 'What's going to happen to those joints and bones?' she asks (Picture: Getty Images) Cher encouraged her followers to take turbulence seriously and follow the rules: 'Any flight that you've ever taken, I can guarantee that you've heard the flight attendants and pilots say to "please keep your seatbelt fastened at all times while seated," even when the seatbelt sign is off. This is due to unexpected turbulence, and it does happen often.' Finally, she added: 'Please take it seriously so we don't have to divert somewhere when you break your ankles' (Picture: Getty Images) Thankfully, not all influencers or TikTokkers have been impressed by the trend, which has likely helped Cher's plight in reducing its popularity. One user said the seatbelt hack 'isn't as comfy as it looks,' while another joked: 'It didn't work out but dang it I tried.' Another gave it a 6/10, saying they were 'entirely underwhelmed,' as someone else echoed it was 'so uncomfortable,' and that they felt 'lied to.' Bottom line? Just sit in your seat like a normal person, keep your seatbelt on, and stay safe (Picture: Getty Images)

'I left Australia for Edinburgh and here's this is why I'd never move back'

More info Australia is, without a doubt, one of the most stunning locations on earth. With its rich culture, history, wildlife, and breath-taking landscapes - not to mention the abundant sunshine - it's hard to find a more spectacular place to live. However, an Aussie woman who swapped Down Under for Edinburgh has shared her top three reasons why she believes life in the Scottish capital is better that in Australia. Gabby Secomb Flegg, a photographer, frequently shares her experiences of moving nearly halfway across the globe with her TikTok followers under her @scotlandmagic account. Having landed in Edinburgh over four years ago, she often gets asked why she would ever choose to leave "beautiful, sunny Australia, for miserable, rainy old Scotland." She told her followers: "So I've decided to tell you three not so great things about living in Australia and why it is much better to live in Scotland." Warning - video below contains explicit language Speaking frankly, she continued: "I feel like I don't need to say this, but bugs. Cockroaches, spiders, lizards and snakes, I know they're not bugs, mosquitoes, literally crickets, bugs, just moths, everything. "They're just everywhere all the time and they're absolutely f***ing annoying and disgusting and I just can't stand them. There are no bugs in Scotland except for midges.", Gabby further elaborated that, contrary to popular belief, constant sunshine can be draining. She added: "The second reason why Australia is not so great is, yeah it is sunny, but we're talking about 49C in the summer. (Image: kristianbell via Getty Images) "Look how pale and pasty I am. I'm so pasty I am literally rocking a moon tan and I get burnt standing next to a microwave. "It's all good to be in summer, sunny, beautiful weather when you're on holidays but imagine trying to work or go to school or literally anywhere in 49C weather." For her third and final point, Gabby highlighted something she believes many Scots and Brits often overlook - the convenience of quick and affordable travel. She pointed out: "If you wanna fly in Australia, even internally, it is so freaking expensive and it takes ages. "Anytime I fly anywhere from here, people are like 'Oh God, it's a three-hour flight, quite a long haul flight' [...] There are many cons to living in Australia, many pros to living in Australia, but they are three very cool reasons why I was more than happy to leave."
