30,000kg target for glass recycling contest across 60 Johor schools
A SANITATION company is aiming to collect 30,000kg of used glass bottles through a recycling competition involving 60 primary schools across Johor.
SWM Environment Sdn Bhd corporate general manager Mohd Norlisam Mohd Nordin said this year's challenge, held for the second time since 2022, would run until November.
'When we first held the challenge three years ago, we collected about 24,000kg of used glass bottles from 30 primary schools.
'Now that the number of participating schools has doubled, we are aiming to collect about 30,000kg,' he said during the launch of the campaign at Johor Tourist Information Centre in Johor Baru.
Mohd Norlisam said this year's challenge was organised in collaboration with Yayasan JCorp and other sponsors.
A total of RM30,000 in cash prizes will be awarded across six categories.
'This year, three new segments have been introduced to spur creativity and encourage broader participation.
'These include categories for innovative glass upcycling ideas and school-wide engagement campaigns through making videos,' he added.
The campaign, he said, carried a key message for both participating schools and the public.
'The challenge is part of SWM Environment's broader efforts to promote environmental responsibility through education and community involvement.
'Glass is often overlooked as a recyclable item, even though it can be repurposed without losing its qualities.
'Children play a crucial role in changing household recycling habits.
'By involving pupils, we are indirectly engaging their families and neighbourhoods, too.'
Mohd Norlisam said SWM Environment was working with local councils and recycling facilities to ensure all collected materials were properly processed and reintegrated into the supply chain.
'Participating schools have already started mobilising their pupils to collect glass bottles and jars, which will be weighed and recorded monthly throughout the campaign period.
'Schools with the highest collection volumes and most creative initiatives will be recognised at the end of the challenge,' he said.
He also hoped the programme could be expanded to other states, noting Johor's strong track record in community- driven recycling efforts.
Also present at the launch were Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) councillor Datuk Abd Rashid Kasman and Johor Education Department Science and Mathematics unit assistant director Dr Mohd Munir Baharom.

Pawe centres urged to stay active with regular programmes
Fatimah suggests that Pawe centres organise monthly or weekly activities to better support their members. DALAT (Aug 7): Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah has called upon committee members of the Senior Citizens Activities Centre (Pawe) to ensure their centres remain vibrant with regular programmes aimed at engaging the elderly community. The Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development emphasised the importance of staying active in one's golden years, stating that physical, mental, and social activities are crucial for senior citizens' overall wellbeing. 'I always monitor the centre's activities, not just in Dalat, but also across the state through Whatsapp groups,' she said. She shared her observations during Pawe Dalat's annual general meeting held at the Dalat Welfare Complex, noting activities such as weaving, Quran recitation, and various other initiatives. Fatimah, who is also the Dalat assemblywoman, suggested that Pawe centres organise monthly or weekly activities to better support their members. 'There are many activities that can be introduced for seniors which can benefit them physically, mentally, spiritually, and economically,' she said. 'Most importantly, these centres serve as a support system for their members, especially in times of need.' According to statistics cited from the Department of Statistics, the Dalat district has 3,400 senior citizens aged 60 and above, representing 15.7 per cent of the district's population. This figure is part of the total 336,900 senior citizens recorded across Sarawak in 2024. Of the 3,400 senior citizens in Dalat, 1,500 are men and 1,800 are women. Pawe Dalat, established in December 2013, currently has 1,120 registered members as of July this year – comprising 505 men and 615 women. Ethnically, 1,014 members are Melanau and 106 are Chinese. Fatimah also lauded Pawe Dalat for organising a range of meaningful activities including traditional music 'seramak', cooking, weaving, handicrafts, sewing, and exercise classes. To support their efforts, she announced a RM10,000 allocation for Pawe Dalat. Dalat fatimah abdullah Pawe centres

Full Enforcement On Fire Certificate For Designated Premises To Begin In 2026
JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- Full enforcement on premises required to obtain a Fire Certificate (FC) will begin in the first quarter of 2026, says Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) deputy director-general (operations) Datuk Ahmad Izram Othman. He stressed that premises failing to comply after the enforcement date could face legal action. "Premises that still fail to obtain the FC after full enforcement may be fined up to RM50,000, or face five years' imprisonment, or both," he told reporters after officiating the Johor-level Fire Safety Organisation (OKK) Seminar here today. Also present were Johor JBPM director Siti Rohani Nadir and State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor. The move is part of the government's effort to tighten fire safety aspects for Designated Premises, which include nine categories: libraries; hospitals and care centres; hotels; hostels and dormitories; offices; shops; factories; places of assembly; and storage facilities. He said to date, a total of 9,321 premises nationwide had been classified as premises required to obtain the FC, with 5,881 already holding the certificate. Johor recorded the highest number, with 2,288 premises categorised as Designated Premises that must have the FC, which must be renewed annually. "Johor has shown significant growth due to many new developments. All premises that receive the Certificate of Completion and Compliance (CCC) from local authorities must register for the FC," he said. According to him, 2025 will serve as a year of education and awareness, including seminars and training sessions for premises owners.

Bereaved family receives Simpan SSPN payout
PUTRAJAYA: The family of the late Poovan Arumugam, 52, a government officer who died of a heart attack in June, on Tuesday received benefits from Skim Simpanan Pendidikan Nasional (Simpan SSPN) savings and takaful protection. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, who led the visit to the family home under National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN)'s Ziarah Kasih Simpan SSPN programme, said the payout demonstrated how Simpan SSPN could ease the burden of families facing unexpected loss. "This is the benefit of saving in Simpan SSPN. Even though the deposits made did not reach the total amount received today, the takaful coverage ensures that the family is protected in times of hardship." Also present during the visit were PTPTN chairman Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim, PTPTN chief executive Ahmad Dasuki Abdul Majid, and Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT) director Prof Harshita Aini Haroon. Poovan, who had opened accounts under both Simpan SSPN Prime and Plus for himself and his three children, left behind his wife, V. Sivagami, 49, and their children aged 10, 15 and 19. His eldest is already pursuing studies at a local university. Under his accounts, the family received RM103,822.56 in total, comprising RM4,822.56 from Simpan SSPN Prime and RM99,000 from Simpan SSPN Plus. Zambry said the ministry's immediate priority was to ensure the children's education was not disrupted. "What is most important is to guarantee the continuity of the children's education." He added that Sivagami was highly qualified, holding a master's degree in education and a diploma in early childhood education from Universiti Malaya. "With her background, we will also consider how she might be supported, so she can continue to provide for her family while ensuring her children's future is secure." Zambry said the case underscored the wider value of Simpan SSPN, which not only offers tax relief, matching grants and competitive dividends, but also provides takaful protection that can make a significant difference to families in times of loss. "This is one example of how planning ahead, even with small monthly commitments, can leave behind a safety net," he said. "It is a reminder to all parents to take advantage of such schemes to secure their children's education."
