Anwar refutes claims on interference, affirms judicial appointments followed due process
PUTRAJAYA (July 18): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has firmly rejected allegations of interference in the recent appointments of Malaysia's top judges, asserting that the selection process was carried out in full accordance with constitutional procedures.
Anwar stressed that the appointments, including that of the new Chief Justice, were discussed at the Conference of Rulers and received the consent of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, reflecting a smooth and lawful process that upholds the Federal Constitution.
'This Conference of Rulers meeting demonstrates that the process went well and adhered to Article 122B of the Constitution. This stands in stark contrast to the accusations that were made earlier.
'I hope that with this explanation and the decision consented by His Majesty the King, the false accusations and unease that have circulated will come to an end.
'For weeks, we were subjected to slander and criticism, but today it is evident those claims were baseless,' he told reporters after Friday prayers at Surau Istiqlal here today.
The Prime Minister also refuted the allegations of political meddling in the selection of candidates for top judicial posts, including what he described as slander against Federal Court Judge Tan Sri Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh.
'He still has many years in service. His name was never proposed, discussed, or submitted to the King. So, where did these allegations come from? It appears to me that these came from politically motivated figures within the legal community. I don't believe these views reflect the stance of the broader legal fraternity. I hope this clarification will clear everything,' he said.
Anwar further emphasised the need to end the culture of slander and baseless accusations targeting the judiciary, warning that such attacks could undermine the credibility and integrity of one of the nation's key institutions.
Late last night, the Federal Court Chief Registrar's Office, in a statement, announced that Court of Appeal Judge Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of Malaysia.
The appointment was made under Clause (1) of Article 122B of the Federal Constitution, with the King's consent, following the Prime Minister's advice and consultation with the Conference of Rulers.
In addition, Federal Court Judge Datuk Abu Bakar Jais has been appointed the Court of Appeal president, while Court of Appeal Judge Datuk Azizah Nawawi will assume the role of Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, succeeding the outgoing judge.

POLITICS SHAH ALAM, July 18 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has no intention of taking action against several Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Members of Parliament (MPs) who have expressed differing views on certain issues, according to PKR Communications Director Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Speaking to reporters after a closed-door meeting between Anwar and PKR Selangor leaders today, Fahmi said the Prime Minister, who is also PKR President, urged party members and branch leaders to respect those differing opinions and move forward together to strengthen the party. 'The Prime Minister has clearly stated that for a few MPs who differ in opinion on certain issues, he does not intend to take any action. They have the right to express their views. 'He has also asked all branch chiefs and party members to understand this and move on,' Fahmi said. Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, said that at the meeting, Anwar also advised newly elected branch leaders to adopt an inclusive approach when appointing their respective committee members. 'The Prime Minister emphasised that even those who lost in the recent party elections or who are not from their own camp should be included as part of a united team for the sake of the party's overall strength,' he said. Additionally, Fahmi said Anwar also informed party leaders that the appointment of State Leadership Council (MPN) Chairs will be finalised before the end of this month and instructed party machinery to start mobilising on the ground in August to boost grassroots support. During the meeting, Fahmi said Anwar also addressed recent allegations surrounding the appointment of the new Chief Justice and reiterated that the process strictly adhered to provisions outlined in the Federal Constitution, and that the list of nominees submitted to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Conference of Rulers was prepared by the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC). 'The Prime Minister only advised the King after consultations with the Conference of Rulers. The process fully complied with constitutional procedures,' said Fahmi, adding that Anwar clarified no judges were dismissed in contrast to previous administrations.

KUCHING (July 18): Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier, Kua Jack Seng, has slammed Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong for making what he described as a 'simplistic and misleading' statement on Sarawak's push for greater parliamentary representation. Yong had recently claimed that increasing Sarawak's number of parliamentary seats requires only a constitutional amendment and has nothing to do with state-level representation. In response, Kua said the Democratic Action Party (DAP) lawmaker failed to grasp the constitutional, historical, and political foundations underpinning Malaysia's formation, particularly the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). The Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Engkilili branch chairman said Malaysia is not just governed by technical amendments, but by founding agreements and structural principles. He said MA63 clearly outlines that Sarawak and Sabah should collectively hold one-third of all parliamentary seats. 'This was never meant to be a 'population game', it was a deliberate political safeguard. 'Yong's view, whether due to ignorance or political convenience, ignores the reality that any amendment to Article 46 of the Federal Constitution, especially one that increases the number of seats, fundamentally shifts power dynamics in Parliament. 'Without restoring the original one-third ratio for Sarawak and Sabah, every added seat dilutes our representation and weakens our voice in national policymaking,' he said in a statement today. Any move to increase parliamentary seats must be holistic and guided by constitutional intent – not political expediency, he added. Supplementary Electoral Roll For June 2025 Open For Review
PUTRAJAYA, 18 Julai (Bernama) -- The Supplementary Electoral Roll for June 2025 (DPT BLN6/2025), which was verified yesterday and gazetted today, is now open for review for 30 days until Aug 16. Election Commission (EC) secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said the roll contained 40,510 names of citizens aged 18 and above from June 1 to 30, who were registered automatically as new voters. 'It also consists of 9,836 registered voters who switched constituencies and 3,791 voters who changed status or category,' he said in a statement here today. Khairul Shahril said the EC was providing five methods for reviewing DPT BLN6/2025, namely via the EC portal at or the official portal of State Election Offices at and the online application at Checks can also be made through the MySPR Semak mobile application or by calling the Voter Registration Verification Hotline at 03-8892 7218. Khairul Shahril urged citizens aged 18 and above during the period from June 1 to 30, 2025, and any registered voters who have applied for a change of electoral constituencies or a change of status, to check their names in DPT BLN6/2025. 'If they find their names are not listed in DPT BLN6/2025, they may submit a claim by filling in Form C online via the application at or by visiting the relevant State Election Office,' he said. Khairul Shahril said He said registered voters in any constituency who wished to object to the entry of voters who have changed to their constituencies may do so by filling in Form D via the same online application or by visiting the relevant State Election Office. Both Form C and D can be downloaded from the State Election Office portals at and should be submitted to the respective State Election Director along with the objection fee during office hours throughout the review period of DPT BLN6/2025.
