Kishtwar Cloudburst: Pilgrims Were Eating Langar, Resting Next To Nullah When Flash Floods Hit
Last Updated: Pilgrims were standing in and around the nullah and waiting for langar were swept away when the cloud burst and the nullah swelled. Groups of pilgrims were scattered in and around the Jasnai nullah and were sitting in setups, collecting food from a community kitchen, popularly known as langar, when flash floods washed them away following a cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar on Thursday. The flash floods have claimed over 46 lives and injured over a hundred people. Over several dozens are being rescued. Officials said that rescue efforts are being hindered due to incessant rain in the region. According to reports by the Indian Express and the Hindustan Times, the pilgrims were gathered at Chasoti village. The village is a key stop on the pilgrimage to the Hindu shrine Machail Mata Mandir. 'The deluge hit a community kitchen set up for the pilgrims where 100 to 150 pilgrims were having food," an officer speaking to the Hindustan Times said. The Jasnai nullah is a regular stop along the pilgrimage route to the Chandi Mata temple in Paddar. The pilgrimage began on July 25, and so far more than 1.3 lakh devotees have visited the shrine. This weekend is especially significant, as the number of pilgrims rises sharply. Each year, on the first Bhadon or Bhadoon Sankranti (August 15 or 16), devotees from across Paddar gather outside the temple in Machail to offer prayers and seek blessings, according to the shrine's website. Local residents said the cloudburst struck between noon and 1 pm, when a large number of pilgrims had gathered at Chositi, the last motorable point before the Kali Mata temple in Machail, located at 2,880 metres. Pilgrims parked their vehicles at Chositi, where makeshift shops and a langar were set up, and continued to the temple on foot along the Jasnai nullah. When the cloudburst hit, many were either standing in the nullah or resting at the langar. Within seconds, the water level surged, sweeping away numerous devotees, locals said, leaving little time for anyone to react. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Google Flights launches new AI search tool
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 14 (PTI) Google on Thursday said Flight Deals, its new, AI-powered search tool within Google Flights, will roll out over the next week in the US, Canada, and India. Announcing this, a blogpost by Google said Flight Deals is designed for flexible travellers whose primary goal is saving money on their next trip. Over the next week, 'Flight Deals' will roll out in the US, Canada and India, and no opt-in would be needed, it further said. The feature can be accessed through the Flight Deals page, or via the top-left menu on Google Flights, the flight search engine that helps users find and compare airline tickets. 'Instead of playing with different dates, destinations and filters to uncover the best deals, you can just describe when, where and how you'd like to travel — as though you're talking to a friend — and Flight Deals will take care of the rest," it said. Citing an example, it said one can start with searching for something like 'week-long trip this winter to a city with great food, nonstop only" or '10 day ski trip to a world-class resort with fresh powder". 'You'll see the best bargains available that match your search, including destinations you may not have previously considered," it said. Flight Deals uses Google's advanced AI to understand the nuances of what users are looking for and identifies matching destinations. Thereafter, it taps into real-time Google Flights data to quickly display relevant, up-to-date options from hundreds of airlines and booking sites. 'We're launching Flight Deals in beta to gather feedback and explore how AI can improve travel planning. But we know you love the original Google Flights, and that's here to stay (in fact, it will keep getting better: we're adding a new option to exclude basic economy fares for trips in the US and Canada)," it said. Annual FASTag pass of Rs 3,000 for private vehicles goes live from Friday
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 14 (PTI) The annual highway toll pass of Rs 3,000 for private cars, jeeps, and vans will be rolled out from Friday. Ahead of the roll out, the government has opened the pre-booking window for FASTag-based annual passes that allow users to cross up to 200 highway toll booths on a single recharge of Rs 3,000 within a year. A dedicated link for activation of the annual pass is available on the Rajmarg Yatra app. The link would also be available on the official websites of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). The annual pass will be applicable only for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans. It will allow seamless travel across National Highways without the need for repeated recharging of FASTag cards for toll payments. In closed tolling highways such as Delhi-Mumbai Expressway – where toll collection occurs exclusively at exit points – a single trip includes both entry and exit points. On the other hand, on open tolling routes like Delhi-Chandigarh, each toll plaza crossing would constitute a separate trip. The pass can be recharged again once the 200-trip limit in a year is reached. According to the MoRTH, those who already have a FASTag on their vehicles will not need to purchase a new FASTag. The annual pass will be valid only at National Highway (NH) and National Expressway (NE) fee plazas. At fee plazas on Expressways, State Highways (SH) managed by state governments or local bodies, the FASTag will operate as a regular one, and applicable user fee charges may apply. FASTag – the electronic toll collection system – uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to automatically deduct toll charges from a prepaid account linked to the vehicle. Over 10.1 crore FASTags were issued till December 1, 2024, according to the road transport ministry's 2024 year-end review.
