KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) has evolved its identity over the past three decades, while remaining steadfast in its mission to celebrate the spirit of human excellence among Malaysians.
Established in 1995, MBR has become synonymous with recognising extraordinary achievements and is now proudly marking its 30th anniversary.
MBR chief executive officer Christopher Wong, who has helmed the organisation since 2015, said MBR has grown beyond just being a record-keeping organisation, but it now serves as a powerful certification platform that empowers individuals and corporations to strengthen their brand identity.
'In the beginning, when we grew up looking at Guinness World Records, it's all about achievements when it comes to things like the tallest person, the fastest person, or the shortest person, or anything that's longest in terms of architecture, or in terms of anything else that's measurable.
'But now fast forward 30 years, MBR has now evolved to become like a branding activation platform, where we look at this organisation as a body that certifies achievements by many individuals and even corporate companies are looking to brand themselves with such feats,' he told Bernama in an exclusive interview.
Wong emphasised that while the organisation's core mission of recognising records remains unchanged, MBR is working to adapt to the changing media landscape, moving to focus on meaningful and inspirational content in the near future.
Since joining MBR, Wong has overseen over 5,000 records and one record however, continues to leave a profound impact on him, a testament to sheer human willpower by double amputee Azzrulkhan Hasrullah Matsah, better known as Adam.
'He (Adam) crawled up to the summit of Mount Kinabalu in 2016. That takes a lot of grit, perseverance, and discipline. I have done Mount Kinabalu. I mean, with able legs, it's not easy.

'Tourism is a major contributor to Malaysia's economy, supporting millions of jobs. 'We recognise the right to voice opinions, but it must be done responsibly and not at the expense of national harmony. We must protect our stability to ensure the success of Visit Malaysia 2026 and the continued growth of the people's economy,' he added. The latest rally, held on Saturday at Dataran Merdeka, saw nearly 15,000 people in attendance.

MoT Urges Public To Use BAS.MY To Ensure Continuation Of Subsidised Bus Service
ALOR SETAR, July 28 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Transport is calling on the public to make full use of the stage bus service introduced under the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme, which is being rolled out in phases this year. Minister Anthony Loke said the government has allocated substantial funding to support this initiative, particularly in urban areas where the service is in operation. 'To convince the Finance Ministry to continue providing allocations to us, I need to show data and performance - that this service truly benefits the people. 'If the public doesn't use this service despite the affordable fares and convenience offered, we will struggle to justify further funding for its expansion,' Loke told reporters after launching the Kota Setar service today. Also present were Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who is also the co-chairman of the Kedah State Development Action Council, and Kedah State Agriculture, Plantation and Transport Committee chairman Dzowahir Ab Ghani. Loke said that the federal government has allocated RM78.5 million over five years, or RM15.7 million annually, to operate 13 SBST routes in Kedah. The Kota Setar service, which began operations in stages on June 1, has recorded approximately 30,000 users monthly, with numbers expected to reach 40,000 by the end of this month. 'We hope more people will use it. The cost to the government is fixed at RM15.7 million a year for Kedah, regardless of how many passengers use the service. 'The more passengers we have, the lower the average cost per passenger, making the government's investment more worthwhile,' the minister remarked.

Local authorities issue 14,834 compounds against foreign-owned businesses
KUALA LUMPUR: Local authorities have issued 14,834 compounds against business premises for offences, including illegal licence transfers to foreigners, since 2023, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said. He added that 2,880 premises were sealed, and 23 business licences revoked. 'The Ministry and PBTs have never allowed foreign nationals to apply for or own hawker licences, grocery stores, eateries, or car workshops,' Nga stressed. Speaking in Parliament, he emphasised that hiring foreigners under hawker licences is prohibited, as the government prioritises Malaysian traders. The enforcement aligns with existing policies like the Hawkers By-Laws, which restrict business licence applications to citizens. Nga confirmed that PBTs conduct regular inspections, especially in areas with high foreigner presence, and confiscate goods from unlicensed foreign traders. Licences are revoked for misuse, with stricter application conditions imposed to curb foreign-owned businesses. Responding to concerns about Malaysians acting as proxies for foreign spouses, Nga urged citizens to uphold the Rukun Negara principles.
