Methody and Queen's to the fore at Irish Rowing Championships
Skibbereen's Abigail Fowler and Aoife Hendy pushed into the lead; Methody tracked them down the course.
The final 500 metres was fascinating: Methody pushed and gained overlap. Skibbereen met the challenge. Twice more Methody pushed, gaining each time. They took the lead for the first time with the surge over the line. The margin was one tenth of a second.
Young, who will partner Hendy in the Ireland double at the Under-19 World Championships early next month, broke into a huge grin at the finish.
In the very next race, Queen's A were quite dominant in the men's novice coxed quadruple – they won by a distance and their B crew took second place.
The Belfast university also added the women's novice coxed quadruple – and again they won by a big margin.
The west and the south came roaring back through young talent.
Jack Rafferty has some engine.
The man from St Michael's of Limerick went through a time trial, a heat and a final to win the junior 18 single on Friday – and then did it again on Saturday as stroke of the men's quadruple.
While he was in control for much of the race in the single, this time St Michael's moved through Cappoquin in the middle of the race and then powered on to win.
UCC, stroked by Olympian Margaret Cremen, saw off all comers in the women's senior quadruple, while Zach Meegan gave University of Galway their second Championship title of the weekend with a fine win in the intermediate single.
Cork Boat Club retained the men's senior pair. Fionnán Tolan and Barry O'Flynn, rowing as Cork B, were up against Olympic medallist Daire Lynch and his partner Michael Campion, but it was the strong Cork crew who took the honours.
They held a slender lead in the middle stages, and UCD then drew level. But it was Tolan and O'Flynn who took control and drove on to take it by over 11 seconds.
Trinity took the women's intermediate pair in remarkable style. Adelaide Telzrow and Maria Mezquita Garcia-Poggio never looked threatened and even as the crews tightened up at the finish they had an eight-second winning margin.

US sprinter Fred Kerley provisionally suspended for whereabouts failures
Olympic 100 metres silver and bronze medallist Fred Kerley has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit for whereabouts failures, the organisation said on Tuesday. American Kerley, the 100m world champion in 2022, plans to contest the allegation that he violated anti-doping rules. "He strongly believes that one or more of his alleged missed tests should be set aside either because he was not negligent or because the Doping Control Officer did not do what was reasonable under the circumstances to locate him at his designated location," an attorney for Kerley said in a statement posted on his X account. He withdrew from the U.S. track and field trials late last month, writing on social media that he was: "Taking some time out to get back on track." "The 100m should be a straight sprint. 2025 has presented many hurdles," he wrote on X. "Thanks to all my supporters." He last competed a month ago at the Grand Sprint Series in Norwalk, California.

Daniel Wiffen reveals plan to train at US college with twin Nathan after serious health struggles
They'll be trading swimming for another sport over the next few weeks NEXT STROKE Daniel Wiffen reveals plan to train at US college with twin Nathan after serious health struggles DANIEL Wiffen will be heading stateside in September as he tags along with twin Nathan who will be starting a scholarship at the University of California. Daniel's swim career is somewhat in flux at the moment after finishing up at Loughborough University where he recently graduated with a degree in computer science. Advertisement 2 Daniel won a gold and bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2 He gassed out at July's World Aquatics Championships due to suffering from appendicitis He's now turning professional and had the option to remain at the Leicestershire college. But despite still being on very good terms with his coach there, he feels it's time for a change in order to ensure his training remains as challenging as possible. Nathan is in the same boat/pool but has clarified his next step by securing a scholarship to be part of the swim team at Berkeley on the US' west coast. The pair appeared on Off the Ball on Monday and laid out how they'll be flying out to the United States once they finish up a golfing tour of Ireland. Advertisement The Olympic 800m champion is currently taking it easy following a disappointing World Championships where his efforts were severely hampered by an ongoing case of appendicitis. Daniel shared that he actually still hasn't had his appendix as he's delayed the operation by a couple of weeks in order to go on holiday before September comes. During the free-wheeling feature interview, the twins expressed their excitement at the prospect of training with what they consider to be the second-best squad in the world. They acknowledged that the University of Florida's swim team is probably superior since it contains Wiffen's 1500m foe Bobby Finke and all-conquering legend Katie Ledecky amongst others. Advertisement But Daniel explained why he wouldn't prefer to train in the Sunshine State with a view towards the next Olympics in 2028 where he'll be targeting three gold medals in Los Angeles. He outlined: "I don't really want to train with my direct rivals to be honest. Inside Sharlene Mawdsley's birthday celebrations as GAA star boyfriend treats her to athletics-themed cake "I don't want to train with them because I think you can be too friendly with your rivals. "I train with other 1500m swimmers but they were never at my level. Or if they were like Felix (Auböck), I could try and chase him because I was a lot younger then. Advertisement "For now I like to train with people who can push me in different ways. Like, realistically I doubt even my rivals would be able to push me on the heart-rate side of swimming long reps. "But on the race pace side of things - which I am quite weak at - I'll have 400m freestylers to push me in California. "So that's what I was more looking for, people who are a bit more sprinty. So when I train with them they'll push me in different ways." POOL PUSH Furthermore, the 24-year-old predicted that there'll probably be a personality clash with so many stars crammed into the one team at Florida. Advertisement He added: "I'm telling you now, it won't last. Something will happen because you can never put that many personalities in one pool. "Somebody's going to clash with someone else or someone will have a bad set some day and snap. "Even when Nathan and I are training (we snap at each other) and we're brothers - but obviously we can patch things up a lot easier."
