Bangladesh Army chief rejects Rakhine corridor, demands December elections

Time of India21-05-2025

Tensions have heightened between
Bangladesh
Army chief
General Waqar-uz-Zaman
and the Muhammad Yunus-led interim regime over the creation of
Rakhine corridor
to Myanmar, elections and law and order situation, among other issues.
Addressing a meeting of army officers in Dhaka on Wednesday, Gen Waqar rejected any notion of a "corridor" and declared it completely unacceptable, ET has learnt. It is understood that he expressed concerns about the interim regime making key decisions while keeping the armed forces in the dark. He firmly stated that the parliamentary elections must be held by this December and that only an elected government should determine the nation's course and not an unelected administration, it has been further learnt.
His strong views came in the backdrop of the move to ban the Awami League and India's decision to ban certain Bangladeshi exports to northeast India. During Wednesday's meeting, some of the officers emphasised that the 'Liberation war' legacy and national prestige were non-negotiable and must not be compromised under any circumstances. There are concerns within the army over efforts to undermine the legacy of Sheikh Mujib and the Liberation war.

The army also decided that it will no longer tolerate mob violence or lawlessness, signaling a shift toward stricter enforcement of order. The officers appeared to rally behind Gen Waqar as of now. While there is no imminent move by him to take over the reins of the nation, Bangladesh watchers do not rule out stringent steps by the army chief.
Hours after the strong message, interim regime NSA Khalilur Rahman, who was allegedly instrumental in pushing the proposal for the Rakhine corridor, went on the backfoot and claimed that Dhaka has not talked about any corridor. Rahman said he is on the same page as the army and the foreign ministry on the issue. It is widely believed that certain external powers have been influencing Rahman to create a corridor to weaken China and the junta. But the move would also adversely impact India's interests in the region.

Odisha increases allowances for civil defence volunteers, home guards

Bhubaneswar: The state govt on Friday increased allowances for civil defence volunteers and home guards, as per the chief minister's office (CMO). "Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi announces a hike of the civil defence volunteers' daily duty allowance from Rs 31 to Rs 150. Their training allowance has been increased to Rs 140 from Rs 28. These revised rates will take effect from May 1, 2025. Similarly, home guards' daily duty allowance has been elevated to Rs 623 from Rs 612, effective from January 1, 2025," a statement from the CMO said. The chief minister hopes a growth in civil defence wing membership following the allowance revision. "Odisha currently has less than 700 active civil defence volunteers. With the allowance increment, the chief minister expressed hope that the number of volunteers will grow, enhancing the state's emergency preparedness network," the CMO's statement said. TOI highlighted civil defence volunteers' pay issues on May 7, amidst the Centre's initiative to bolster the wing nationwide following recent Ind-Pak tension. "We are glad that the govt increased our duty and training allowances. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo Despite the enhancement in our pay, we are still the lowest paid volunteers in the country. The govt affirmed its commitment to strengthening the civil defence wing. Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi recently made a public appeal, urging youths to join the civil defence wing. Majhi also directed the expansion of civil defence units beyond the present 12 districts. For the first time, a six-day training programme was organised for them in Bhubaneswar on June 1, where NDRF experts imparted lessons in various domains, including psychological warfare, essential service maintenance, community drills, evacuation procedures, and protection against nuclear, biological and chemical threats. 'We are scared, situation unpredictable': Indian students in Tehran seek evacuation amid Iran-Israel escalation

The Indian students studying in Iran have appealed to the government for evacuation following Israeli airstrikes that targeted key military and nuclear sites in Iran, including areas near the capital. "Right now the situation is calm and we are safe, but we are feeling scared. The attack started at around 3:30 am and we felt the land shake. It was a concerning experience," Tabiya Zahra, a second-year MBBS student from Kashmir at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), told PTI. Zahra said that while the university officials visited the students and advised them to remain calm, they did not offer clarity on which areas might be safer. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If You Eat Ginger Everyday for 1 Month This is What Happens Tips and Tricks Undo She urged the Indian government to arrange evacuation, citing uncertainty about the security situation and limited communication access due to internet disruptions in some areas. Live Events "They are trying to collect data in case evacuation is needed," she added. Both students are in their second year of a 5.5-year MBBS program, having gone to Tehran in 2023. They confirmed that airspace over Tehran has been closed and flights from Imam Khomeini International Airport were suspended following the strikes. The escalation began late Thursday when Israel launched airstrikes targeting several locations in Iran, including its main nuclear enrichment facility at Natanz, radar stations and surface-to-air missile sites. Black smoke was seen rising from some of the affected areas and explosions were reported in Tehran and other parts of western Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later confirmed that the strikes were aimed at Iranian nuclear and military infrastructure. In response, Iran launched a retaliatory attack, sending a swarm of drones toward Israel. The Iranian leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned of a "severe punishment" following the Israeli offensive. The situation has significantly raised tensions in the region and prompted international concern over the possibility of further escalation. The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association has written to External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, requesting urgent intervention to assist the Indian students, particularly those from Jammu and Kashmir, studying in Iran. In the letter, the Association highlighted the evolving security situation and noted that many Indian students are enrolled in universities located near strategic sites. It said that the closure of airspace and increased military activity have raised concerns among the students and their families. Jammu and Kashmir Students Association national convenor Nasir Khuehami said that several students have reported hearing air raid sirens and feeling tremors. "We are receiving calls from the students and their families, requesting assistance. We urge the government to stay prepared and take necessary steps if evacuation becomes unavoidable," he added. The Association also requested improved communication from the Indian Embassy in Tehran and the preparation of a contingency plan, depending on how the situation develops.

Puri cops conduct anti-terror drills ahead of Rath Yatra

Bhubaneswar: Two weeks ahead of Rath Yatra, which will draw lakhs of pilgrims, Puri police carried out mock drills on Friday at multiple locations to enhance preparedness against potential terrorist threats. Given the recent Indo-Pak tensions and the govt's invitation to VVIPs, including the President, Prime Minister, Union ministers and chief ministers from NDA-ruled states to Rath Yatra, this year's festival will witness heightened security measures. "With lakhs of devotees expected to attend this year's Rath Yatra, ensuring foolproof security is our top priority. The simulation exercises help us identify gaps in our response mechanism and improve coordination among different security agencies," Vinit Agrawal, SP of Puri, said. The counter-terrorism mock drills were conducted at the Puri railway station and near the Jagannath Temple to evaluate how effectively rescue agencies can respond during emergencies. Police officers said the aim is to achieve smooth coordination between various response agencies to eliminate any possibility of uncertainty and chaos during actual emergencies. "Police, fire service, Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force, National Disaster Response Force, healthcare professionals, and anti-terrorist squad (ATS) of the special tactical group took part in the mock drills," Agrawal said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Forget Furosemide, Use This Household Item To Help Drain Edema Fluid WellnessGuide Learn more Undo The simulation exercises were conducted three days after Odisha police deployed a dedicated anti-terrorist squad near the shrine for smooth conduct of Rath Yatra.
