South Africa edges Morocco 1-0 in AFCON U20 Final : Lion Cubs secure World Cup spot
South Africa's under-20 team defeated Morocco 1–0 on Sunday evening in Cairo, in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON U20), which concluded on May 18 in Egypt. The result was a reversal of the 1997 final, when the Atlas Lion Cubs beat South Africa to claim their first continental title in the category. The only goal of this year's final came from Gomolemo Kekana in the 70th minute.
Despite the loss, Mohamed Ouahbi's squad delivered a solid performance, showing cohesive team play and creating several chances—though none found the back of the net.
The Lion Cubs' impressive campaign began with a 3–2 win over Kenya, followed by victories against Tunisia (3–1) and Sierra Leone (1–0), before a standout semi-final performance against host nation Egypt (1–0).
By reaching the final four, Morocco also secured qualification for the upcoming U20 World Cup, set to take place in Chile.

‘You Have My Word': The Moment Achraf Hakimi Chose Morocco
Former Morocco technical director Nasser Larguet has revealed the behind-the-scenes story of how Achraf Hakimi opted to represent Morocco over Spain. Speaking to French newspaper L'Équipe , Larguet explained how he travelled to Madrid to meet the then-teenage Hakimi, his father and his Spanish agents in a hotel. 'I told him: 'If you choose Spain, you'll still be Moroccan. We'll always support you. But if you choose Morocco, we'll be proud to have you,'' said Larguet. He gave Hakimi half an hour to decide. 'I said I needed to speak with another player. When I came back, he said: 'It's Morocco.'' Larguet added: 'I told him: 'if you shake my hand, it means more than any contract'. He said: 'You have my word, I'll give everything.' I warned him there were no guarantees, but if he worked hard, he'd play for the senior team. And the rest is history.' Hakimi, now 26, has gone on to become one of Morocco's most influential players. Since making his senior debut in 2016 at the age of 17, the Paris Saint-Germain full-back has earned 83 caps and scored 10 goals for his country. He featured in two World Cups – starting every match in Morocco's historic run to the semi-finals at Qatar 2022 – and has appeared at three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, scoring from two direct free-kicks in the 2021 edition. Hakimi also netted a memorable Panenka penalty in the shootout win over Spain at the 2022 World Cup, knocking out his country of birth. Tags: Achraf HakimiafconMorocco

Amine Adli opens up on his mother's passing ahead of Afcon and Morocco's support
Moroccan footballer Amine Adli has opened up about the passing of his mother in a heartfelt interview with Instant Foot. Just before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), held in January 2024, Adli was called up to the Morocco national team. But he was also facing a devastating personal loss—the death of his mother. In the interview, he recalls those difficult days. After a strong season with Bayer Leverkusen, Adli decided to spend the holidays with his mother. «I took a vacation with my mom in Dubai. It was our first time there, and everything went well», he said. But once they returned, things took a turn. «We came back, my mom went back home, and my sister told me, 'Mom isn't feeling well. She's at the hospital'». Adli rushed to be by her side in France. «They kept telling me she was fine. My mom kept saying, 'Go ahead, Amine, go play football.' I said no, I wouldn't leave, but she insisted». ? — SOCCER212 (@SCCR_212) May 27, 2025 Adli joined the national team's AFCON camp, but a day later, his sister called again. «She said, 'Come back. Mom isn't doing well'». Coach Walid Regragui told him, «Go back right away». Adli returned, but within days, his mother's condition worsened, and she passed away. He shared how the Moroccan federation helped him fulfill his mother's last wish—to be buried in Meknes. «I called the coach and told him. Repatriating a body for burial—it's a lot. But the national team, the whole federation, they really supported me. They arranged a plane so we could get to Morocco quickly, helped with all the paperwork. They took care of everything». In the midst of his grief, Adli made a choice. «I felt I had to go for my country. After everything the team did for me, I owed it to them. I had to show up». Returning to the pitch helped. «Once I started training again, it helped. It was good to think about something else, to clear my mind. Sometimes, being on the pitch just helps». Adli also spoke about the overwhelming support from Moroccan fans. «Incredible support. I can't even express how grateful I am».

«You won't find anyone better than me to win AFCON», says Morocco coach Regragui
Estimated read time: 2' Today, national team coach Walid Regragui expressed full confidence in his ability to lead Morocco to victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Morocco at the end of the year. Speaking at a press conference at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Maamoura, where he announced the squad for upcoming friendly matches against Tunisia (June 6) and Benin (June 9) at the Grand Stadium of Fez, Regragui addressed rumors about his potential departure from the national team. He declared, «You won't find anyone better than me to win the Africa Cup of Nations». «If anyone thinks Guardiola, Ancelotti, or Klopp can win it, they should go sit down with them and plead their case. I'm capable of doing it. No one will do it better than me». Regragui described the two friendly matches as crucial tests to evaluate players ahead of the tournament. «Since the Africa Cup of Nations will see us facing African teams, choosing Tunisia and Benin is important», he explained, noting that both teams have strong defenses that will help Morocco prepare effectively. On the absence of some players, he said, «We're not here to chase or seduce anyone. Players must earn the right to represent Morocco». He added, «Our mission is to attract the best players who choose to represent Morocco with their hearts. If a player isn't called up, it means they haven't secured their place yet or have other options». He urged fans to support the players who have accepted the call to wear the national jersey. Regarding the missing defenders, Regragui clarified, «About 90 percent of the defenders are out due to injury, but this gives us the chance to test new players and confirm our choices after these two matches». He also noted that «these absences just happened to coincide with the friendly match period». He reaffirmed, «We have a project to build a strong defense, which is why I'm experimenting with different players to find the best combination». Regragui stressed that while «the team's core remains stable, changes depend on player form, injuries, and decisions by the technical staff». He concluded, «Winning the Africa Cup of Nations requires talented players, passionate fans, and above all, a winning mentality that must be deeply embedded in the team—it's essential for success».
