NSG Commandos Visits Puri Jagannath Temple, Review Security

A four-member team of National Security Guard (NSG) commandos visited the Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri on Monday to carry out a routine security review as part of their annual calendar.
Speaking to the media, Superintendent of Police (SP), Puri, Vinit Agrawal said, "A four-member team of NSG commandos has come here to review the security around Shri Jagannath temple as part of a routine process which is part of their annual calendar."
The visit by the elite NSG team is aimed at assessing existing security measures at the temple, which is one of the most revered and heavily visited pilgrimage sites in India. Officials said the review included inspection of entry and exit points, crowd management protocols, emergency response mechanisms, and coordination among local police and temple security staff.
The NSG, India's premier counter-terrorism force, periodically undertakes such reviews at prominent religious and public places to ensure preparedness against any potential security threats. The exercise in Puri is in line with these standard operating procedures and is not linked to any specific alert, sources added.
The Shri Jagannath Temple, which draws lakhs of devotees every year, especially during the annual Rath Yatra, remains a high-security zone, with multiple layers of protection and surveillance. The routine visit by the NSG team is seen as a proactive step to strengthen security frameworks and ensure the safety of devotees and temple premises.
Local authorities confirmed that the visit went off smoothly, and the NSG team shared their observations with the district police for any possible enhancements in security arrangements.
Meanwhile, in the wake of the Pahalgam attacks that killed 26 people, the Union Home Ministry has asked several states to conduct mock drills on May 7 for effective civil defence. The measures to be undertaken include operationalization of Air Raid Warning Sirens and training of civilians, students, etc on the civil defence aspects to protect themselves in the event of a hostile attack.
The measures also include the provision of crash blackout measures, provision for early camouflaging of vital installations and updation of the evacuation plan and its rehearsal.

Caste, Not Class, Will Be Counted In 2027 Population Census: Sources
New Delhi: Caste, and not class, will be taken into consideration during the exhaustive count of the population of the country that will be held in 2026-2027, sources said on Thursday. Each person will have to mention their caste and religion for the 16th Census that will be conducted in two phases in 2027. "Along with religion, everyone will have to declare their caste, irrespective of whether one is from the general category, OBC or Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe category," a source said. Explaining the need to specify the caste, rather than class, the source said there is no unified or single list for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), unlike the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs). "The OBC list varies from state to state and that from the Centre," the source said. Two separate lists of OBCs are maintained - the central list is maintained by the National Commission for Backward Classes and used for reference in providing reservations in central government jobs and educational institutes; the state lists are managed by the respective governments and are often longer and more extensive than the central list. On Wednesday, the Union Home Ministry announced that India's 16th Census with caste enumeration will be carried out in 2027 with the reference date of October 1, 2026 in snow-bound areas like Ladakh and of March 1, 2027 in the rest of the country. The Census is being carried out after a gap of 16 years as the last one was held in 2011. More than 30 lakh enumerators and their supervisors are likely to be engaged to carry out the mega exercise. It will also be the first digital Census giving the citizens an opportunity to self-enumerate. The population of the country as per the Census 2011 was 1210.19 million of which 623.72 million (51.54 per cent) were males and 586.46 million (48.46 per cent) were females.

India's first caste-based digital census to begin on March 1, 2027
The Centre is set to launch the next nationwide Census, which will also include a caste enumeration for the first time, from March 1, 2027, senior government officials confirmed on Wednesday. However, in some selected regions, including Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the Census will commence earlier, starting in October 2026. The national exercise will take place in two phases, the officials further said. The development comes a month after the union government announced that the caste-based enumeration will be a part of the next decadal census. The decision was taken at the high-powered cabinet committee on political affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Bihar, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have conducted caste surveys in the last three years, while Karnataka is mulling the release of data from a survey conducted in 2015. The previous decadal national census, scheduled for 2021, was indefinitely postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to officials, Census 2027 will also be the first digital census. Earlier, the Centre announced that a mobile app for the collection of data and a census portal for the management and monitoring of various census-related activities have already been developed. In March this year, the Union Home Ministry informed a parliamentary standing committee that the preparatory activities for the decadal exercise have been completed. The ministry was clarifying the reasons for the reduced allocation from ₹1,309 crore in 2024-25 to ₹574 crore in 2025-26 for the Census. The first synchronous census in India was held in 1881. Since then, censuses have been undertaken uninterruptedly once every 10 years. It is the biggest source of information on demographic, socioeconomic and other parameters of the entire population of India. This data is used for planning and policymaking and provides valuable input about the impact of government policies. The data is also used to demarcate constituencies and allocate state-wise representation in Parliament.

BJP in Odisha plans mega celebrations on first anniversary of Mohan Majhi govt
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Odisha, under chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, is set to celebrate their first anniversary with a host of events starting Thursday, which includes high-profile events, cultural programmes and development initiatives ahead of a major state-level function on June 12. Some of the planned events during this period are exclusive dinners with the chief minister for corporate leaders, civil society members, MPs/MLAs, and media personnel. A mega outreach programme talking about the achievements of the Majhi government, a 5-minute theme song and a 25-minute long thematic audio-visual documentary are also part of the celebrations. 'The centerpiece of the celebrations will be a grand state-level function scheduled for June 12 at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend. It would be held at the same scale as the launch of the Subhadra scheme for Odisha women by PM Modi on September 17 last year,' said an official familiar with the events. The official said specially branded vans will go around all the 314 blocks of Odisha from June 5-19 to amplify the government's achievements and raise awareness among people about key governance reforms, flagship schemes and public service delivery initiatives. From next week, celebrations will be held across the state with thematic state-level functions. On June 13, a programme on women will be held in Berhampur, while on June 18, a function dedicated to youths will take place in Dhenkanal. Similarly, a programme on tribals is slated for Mayurbhanj on June 19 followed by a special event for farmers in Bargarh district on June 20. The government's monthly magazine, Pragati Prabaha, will feature success stories of various government departments on themes like women empowerment, agriculture, industries, Odia asmita, governance, health, education, infrastructure, and sports. The tourism department will highlight achievements in in-flight magazines and display promotional content at major airports during the Rath Yatra period later this month. The Odia language and literature department will organise an artist camp on the theme 'Vision Odisha @2036', engaging institutions like Lalit Kala Akademi. Slamming the elaborate celebration, opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) said the government should introspect. 'What has the government achieved in the last 1 year except renaming schemes started by Naveen Patnaik? Subhdara scheme has failed to make any impact and many farmers could not get ₹800 a quintal bonus for paddy. Law and order condition has worsened with reports of murders, rape and snatching becoming rampant. The government should focus more on work instead of bragging about their achievements,' said BJD spokesman Pratap Deb. However, BJP state general secretary Jatin Mohanty said the BJD should be the last party to criticise BJP. 'The amount of money the previous government spent in projecting VK Pandian as successor to Naveen Patnaik would put the budget of a state government department to shame. In just about a year, we have managed to fulfil many of the promises that we made including the Subhadra scheme which was our promise to the women of the state. The celebration of one year is our way of reaching out to people and educating them about achievements of the government as well as development programmes that are in the pipeline,' Mohanty said.
