Malaysia launches 65,000 free skills courses for ASEAN
KUALA LUMPUR: About five million Asean citizens are expected to benefit from the 65,000 free skills development courses offered by Malaysia, worth nearly RM2.5 billion, said Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong.
He said this initiative, which aligns with the 2025 Asean Year of Skills, covers courses in areas such as artificial intelligence, digitalisation, green technology and leadership.
He added that the courses would be offered in conjunction with National Training Week from June 14 to 21.
'The courses will be offered with the participation of top global training entities such as Microsoft, Udemy, AwanTech, Alibaba Cloud and many more, including our own Malaysian training providers.
'This is what we are bringing to the table. For the first time, we will be expanding these high-quality training opportunities beyond our own borders to our friends all over Asean.
'We aim to train throughout this one whole week to provide exposure to these high-quality skills training courses to at least five million people – citizens of Asean.'
He was speaking at the Asean Human Capital Development Investment Symposium held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre yesterday.
Sim said Malaysia aims to build a meaningful partnership with other Asean countries to transform the region into the most skilled in the world.
He added that the initiative aims to bridge talent gaps across member states and foster a more agile and competitive regional workforce.
Sim said Malaysia would also host several other regional events – the Asean Training Market Conference in July, the Asean TVET Conference in August and the Asean Labour Ministerial Meeting Forum in October.

PETALING JAYA: Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah praised the quality and expertise of doctors at the National Heart Institute (IJN) after receiving treatment there. Anwar also spoke about his conversation with President of Guinea-Bissau General Umaro Sissoco Embaló, during which he asked why Malaysia was chosen despite limited bilateral trade. "His answer was that he follows developments here and sees Malaysia as a country on the rise, with significant potential. That's why he chose to come," he said. Embaló arrived today for a three-day visit—his first since taking office as president in February 2020. Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations in November 1974. In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Guinea-Bissau reached RM4.1 million, with Malaysian exports amounting to RM4.04 million and imports standing at RM0.06 million.

China Announces ‘ASEAN Visa' To Facilitate Travel With Southeast Asia
China has announced the implementation of an 'ASEAN visa' aimed at citizens from the 10 ASEAN member states as well as Timor-Leste, an ASEAN observer, in a move to ease travel and exchanges between China and Southeast Asia. The announcement was made by Lin Jian, spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a press conference held on Tuesday. Lin explained that the initiative seeks to simplify cross-border travel in the region, complementing existing visa exemptions China has with countries such as Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia. It also adds to the 'Lancang-Mekong visa' programme offered to tourists from countries in the Mekong River basin. 'The construction of a China-ASEAN community with a shared future is being strengthened, and joint efforts to build 'a safe, peaceful, prosperous, beautiful and friendly home' have shown results over recent years,' Lin said. He added that exchanges and visits between the people of China and Southeast Asian countries are very close, and further facilitation of such exchanges is a shared aspiration among all parties. The new 'ASEAN visa' will offer eligible applicants a multiple-entry visa valid for five years for business visit purposes to China. Ryan Roslansky, who oversees the business-focused social network owned by Microsoft, will remain CEO of LinkedIn but also oversee products such as Word and Excel and also "Copilot," Microsoft's leading AI product, within the company's productivity software suite, the memo said. Roslansky will report to Rajesh Jha, who oversees Microsoft Windows and Teams, among other duties. The memo said existing Office leaders Sumit Chauhan and Gaurav Sareen will report to Jha as well.
