Wildlife rehab center uses genius technique to raise orphaned birds without human interaction: 'Incredibly successful'

Yahoo16-03-2025

Thanks to a unique woven crane costume, a South African wildlife rehab center is teaching orphaned birds essential survival skills while preventing human imprinting, reported Upworthy.
The FreeMe Wildlife Midlands Centre uses puppets and crane costumes to help a critically endangered wattled crane chick learn natural behaviors without becoming dependent on humans. This approach allows wildlife professionals to care for vulnerable animals while preserving their wild instincts.
Many baby animals need to learn basic survival tasks from their mothers. When orphaned, they risk missing out on these lessons. The challenge for rehabilitators is providing care without creating attachments that could harm an animal's chances in the wild.

"This is a vital part of the rehabilitation process. If one does not intimately understand the physiology, the ethology, and the psychology of one's subject, one cannot successfully rehabilitate it," FreeMe shared on its social media, according to Upworthy.
The center uses a puppet named Waldo attached to a worker's arm to demonstrate drinking from a pond. This method allows staff to mimic adult crane behavior precisely while hiding behind the costume.
Similar techniques have proved successful with other threatened species. According to Upworthy, one commenter noted: "This is exactly how the San Diego Zoo (amongst others) takes care of baby California condors so they don't imprint. Since they were so critically endangered and almost extinct in the wild, they used puppets to teach them how to be birds so they could be released and rebound their populations. And they were incredibly successful!"
The approach works with common birds too. "When I've rescued baby pigeons often they won't peck seeds unless there are other birds around, soo sometimes I'll put on a YouTube video of birds eating and then they get it," another person shared.
These thoughtful rehabilitation techniques help vulnerable animals develop necessary skills while maintaining the required distance for eventual release. As FreeMe states on its website, the purpose of wildlife rehabilitation is "to rehabilitate these animals so that they may be released back into the wild in areas free from poaching and with reduced human activity."

YouTube Increases Age Limit for Livestreaming

This story was originally published on Social Media Today. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Social Media Today newsletter. YouTube's looking to avoid potential risks with youngsters livestreaming in the app, with the platform announcing that it's increasing its age limit for livestreams, with live broadcasts to be restricted to users aged 16 and up from next month. YouTube will soon also remove livestreams that display youngsters without the presence of an adult. As explained by YouTube: 'As of July 22, we are increasing the minimum age required to livestream to 16 years old. This means that creators will need to be 16 or older to be able to livestream on YouTube. Additionally, livestreams featuring 13-15 year olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may have their live chat disabled and the account may temporarily lose access to live chat or other features. Please note that, in the future, we plan to take down these livestreams and the account may temporarily lose its ability to live stream.' The change is likely to impact gaming streamers the most, who often start in their teens, with the new restriction now delaying their content ambitions. But it may well be an important, valuable change in protecting younger users from exploitation and risk, though YouTube's hasn't shared any official reason for the update. Though there have been various reports of teens being exposed on livestreams over the years. At the same time, YouTube is also currently embroiled in a debate in Australia as to whether the app should be included in the government's upcoming age restrictions on social media use, with Australian officials set to implement a 16-year-old access limit for all social media apps. YouTube has been exempted from this, due to its educational value, but the nation's eSafety Commissioner has this week called for YouTube to be included in the change, as it also poses a risk. Maybe, upping the age of livestreaming could help YouTube pushback against this, by reiterating that social elements are not its focus, and that its social video tools, like livestreaming, are already restricted to over 16s anyway. I don't think that law changes in Australia would be the only motivation on this front, but it could be another reason for the update, which, presumably, won't have a major impact on overall streaming activity. Really, it seems like a sensible update, which will keep kids safe, and it's good to see YouTube looking to take a stronger stand on this front. Somni Just Became Los Angeles's First Three-Michelin-Star Restaurant

Just six months after Aitor Zabala resurrected his ambitious Spanish tasting menu restaurant, Somni, in West Hollywood, it has become Los Angeles's first three-Michelin-starred restaurant. The previous iteration of the restaurant inside the SLS Beverly Hills, which earned two Michelin stars, closed in August 2020 amid the pandemic. This is the first time a restaurant in Los Angeles has been awarded three stars since the guide arrived to the city in 2008. Somni's three-star designation was revealed in a video posted to the Michelin Guide's YouTube channel in advance of the 2025 ceremony on June 25 in Sacramento. The video quickly circulated on Reddit, but is now marked as unlisted. A Michelin Guide representative confirmed the Somni three-star designation to Eater. Zabala's impressive resume includes restaurants like Alkimia, Abac, El Bullí, Akelarre, and numerous José Andrés restaurants. He opened the first version of Somni, which means 'dream' in Catalan, in 2018 as a 25-course tasting menu with 10 seats at a blonde wood curved counter. (The first version of the restaurant was opened with Andres as a partner, though he is no longer involved.) 'Somni is our American dream — our opportunity to add to the legacy and culture of Los Angeles,' he told Eater in 2018. But just two years later, the restaurant closed when its contract, along with the Bazaar's, was terminated with the SLS Beverly Hills. After years of anticipation, Zabala debuted the current iteration of Somni in West Hollywood in November 2024. The restaurant is a fully realized version of the dream he had in 2018, encompassing multiple spaces that include a tree-lined courtyard and an auditorium-like dining room. Somni seats 14 diners across two curved counters, set in a high-ceilinged dining room. Zabala and chef de cuisine Ismael Parra, along with a team of cooks, assemble intricate dishes as guests look on, like a Parmesan feather and a dashi meringue crowned with caviar. An evening here is as much of a meal as it is an exhibition of Zabala's work as an artist and chef, weaving Spanish influences and California sensibilities. Somni's recognition as the first three-Michelin-starred restaurant in Los Angeles is a significant milestone for the city. Before the 2025 ceremony, Los Angeles restaurants had only ever been awarded two stars. Undoubtedly, Zabala has ushered in a new era of Michelin-caliber dining in Los Angeles — and in California. In a complete rebirth, former two-Michelin-star restaurant Somni has opened in a new West Hollywood location under chef Aitor Zabala. Somni occupies a cloistered set of buildings just north of Santa Monica Boulevard serving precise Spanish-inflected modernist tasting menus to a rounded duet of countertops. The high-ceiling space acts as a theater of sorts to Zabala's kitchen crew, assembling dashi meringue fish topped with Astrea caviar or escabeche mussels dressed with borage flowers. Expect every flavorful turn to be delightful, especially for the sky-high $495 price that will inevitably feel justified after experiencing perhaps the most innovative meal in Los Angeles. — Matthew Kang, lead editor, Eater Southern California/Southwest See More:

Haggard-looking ‘Liver King' seen in new mugshot after arrest for ‘terroristic threat' against Joe Rogan

Infamous influencer 'Liver King' appeared unkempt and haggard in a newly released mugshot following his bizarre arrest for allegedly making a terroristic threat against podcaster Joe Rogan. YouTuber Brian Johnson, 47, was busted in Austin, Texas on Tuesday when he suddenly appeared on Rogan's property talking about 'picking a fight' while packing what appears to be two golden firearms, according to footage he posted to social media. Johnson's disheveled appearance in his booking photo is a stark contrast to the polished image he curated for himself on YouTube as the buff 'CEO of ancestral life.' Austin Police Department Johnson gained fame on social media by attributing his ripped physique to a wild diet of animal testicles, liver and fertilized chicken eggs. Advertisement But in 2022 he admitted he blew through $11,000 a month for steroids to maintain his brawny body. The YouTuber hasn't appeared in a video on his channel in eight months but during that time, he's begun to post daily on his Instagram, often consisting of a confounding tirades that's sparked concern among his fans. 'The Joe Rogan Experience' doesn't feature an episode with Johnson as a guest, but he has come up multiple times before on the show when the discussion centers around bodybuilding and performance-enhancing drugs. 4 Johnson hasn't appeared in a video on his YouTube channel in eight months. Instagram/@liverking Advertisement On Wednesday, Johnson shared a nonsensical video promoting Blue Scorpion Venom, a pain and inflammation reliever that is often marketed to cancer patients but 'has not been scientifically proven to treat cancer in humans,' according to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. In the video, Johnson addresses his arrest while only referring to Rogan as 'some guy,' but directly refers to the podcaster's comedy club 'Mothership' by name. 'Some guy, he thought if you just put him in jail, put him in jail, have the violent crimes division, have them come arrest him for a terroristic threat and the whole time that terroristic threat you thought was a bomb or something, inside that box was actually a present back for you and your Mothership colleagues for having my wife and me in Mothership that I've held on to for awhile just looking for the right time to give it to you,' Johnson rambled. 4 Johnson and his wife, Barbara Johnson. Instagram/@liverking Advertisement Johnson has continued to allude to the fight he hopes to have with Rogan in a slew of posts on his social media. 'This is truly so disappointing. This is not the way. Too much testosterone and pride here. You're an influencer and people will say things. Just move on,' one fan wrote in response to Johnson's recent and erratic posts. 4 Johnson has posted increasingly confusing videos on his Instagram. Instagram/@liverking 'Bro clean yourself up and leave your kids with a great family name. You are destroying what you have grown acting weird af,' another user commented. Still, Johnson appears to be dead set on having his cage match with black belt Rogan. 'No laws will be broken, I assure you of that. No details will be discussed either,' Johnson said. Rogan has not commented on Johnson's arrest or incessant invites to fight. Johnson faces a class B misdemeanor charge for allegedly making a terroristic threat and was held at Travis County Jail in Austin on a bond of $20,000 before his release.
