New wharf in Vietnam to handle cargo headed to Laos
VIENTIANE: Secretary General of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party Central Committee and President of Laos, Thongloun Sisoulith, on Monday (April 28) led a high-level delegation to attend the inauguration of Wharf No. 3 at the Lao-Viet International Seaport on the Vietnamese coast in Ha Tinh province.
The new wharf will handle cargo destined for shipment to other countries as well as unloading goods for onward road transport to Laos.
Alongside his Vietnamese counterpart Luong Cuong, President Thongloun witnessed the inauguration of the new dock, which is seen as a powerful symbol of the deep-rooted, ever-growing bond between Laos and Vietnam.
Located in the Vung Ang Economic Zone in Ha Tinh province, the Lao-Viet International Seaport now has three piers.
The facility is managed by the Lao-Viet International Port Joint Stock Company, which owns a 40 per cent stake, while the Lao Asia Telecom State Enterprise, representing the Lao government, holds a 60 per cent share.
The construction of Wharf No. 3 is a historic achievement, highlighting the strength of the friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between the two Parties, states, and peoples.
It represents a treasured gift from the Vietnamese Party, state, and people to Laos, reflecting a partnership that remains steadfast, ever stronger, and focused on delivering real benefits to both countries.
More than just a construction milestone, the Lao-Viet International Seaport is a strategic breakthrough in the socio-economic development strategies of the two countries.
It will serve as a major factor in Laos' goal to use its landlocked location to bolster regional connectivity by various means.
By strengthening transport infrastructure — particularly maritime logistics — Laos now connects more seamlessly with the region and the world, opening up more opportunities for trade, investment, and economic growth.
Representing the two governments, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam, Nguyen Chi Dung, and member of the Politburo of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party Central Committee and Deputy Prime Minister of Laos, Saleumxay Kommasith, delivered speeches at the inauguration ceremony.
Speaking on behalf of the Lao Party, state, and multi-ethnic people, Saleumxay expressed heartfelt gratitude and paid tribute to the great leaders — President Ho Chi Minh, President Kaysone Phomvihane, and President Souphanouvong — who laid the foundations for the enduring Laos-Vietnam relationship.
He said 'In today's complex and unpredictable world, our two nations must work even harder to preserve and strengthen our special bond. It is a sacred duty for future generations to protect and nurture this priceless legacy, born from the sacrifices and aspirations of their forebears.'
He hailed the inauguration of Wharf No. 3 as a dream come true for the Lao Party, state, and people — fulfilling their longstanding hope for direct access to the sea.
The Deputy Prime Minister expressed his deep gratitude to the Vietnamese government and Ha Tinh provincial authorities, and pledged that Laos would collaborate closely with Vietnam to maximise the port's potential, bringing tangible benefits to the peoples of both nations.
He also reaffirmed the Lao government's commitment to further strengthening the great tradition of friendship, solidarity, and cooperation between Laos and Vietnam.
President Thongloun and his delegation also visited the Military Region 4 Command in Vinh city, Nghe An province, and held talks with the provincial Party Committee and leaders of Ha Tinh province.
The Lao delegation then attended an event to mark the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975-2025) in Ho Chi Minh City. - Vientiane Times/ANN

Estonian, Vietnam agree on digital cooperation projects
