Renovated Allikuttai Lake inaugurated in Salem
The Allikuttai Lake, renovated at a cost of ₹10 crore, was inaugurated by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin via video conference on Thursday.
Located in the Ammapettai Zonal Office area, the lake spans 23.65 acres. The renovation involved the construction of embankments, walkways, retaining walls, sloped retaining walls, chain-link fencing, electric lighting, sanitation facilities, sluice gates, alternate canals, sports equipment, and seating areas. The lake was also desilted.
As a result, the water spread area has increased to help prevent the pollution of nearby agricultural lands, drinking water sources, and groundwater. During the monsoon season, the lake will retain rainwater, improving groundwater levels and supporting irrigation needs, ultimately enhancing agricultural productivity.
It may be noted that Mr. Stalin laid the foundation stone for the lake's renovation during an event held in Karuppur on June 11, 2023. The project was funded under the Infrastructure and Amenities Fund and has now been completed and opened for public use.
District Collector R. Brindha Devi, Mayor A. Ramachandran, Corporation Commissioner M. Elangovan, Deputy Mayor M. Saradha Devi, councillors, and officials were present at the inauguration.

The Tamil Nadu government on Sunday released a detailed report highlighting its extensive urban development efforts under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's 'Dravidian Model' of governance, stating that the state is witnessing rapid urbanisation through focused and inclusive infrastructure investment. According to the report, over Rs 36,000 crore has been committed to strengthening basic amenities across urban and semi-urban regions. Key among the initiatives is the implementation of 71 major drinking water supply projects at a cost of Rs 9,000 crore, benefiting more than 1.2 crore people across four Municipal Corporations, 13 Municipalities, 49 Town Panchayats, and over 10,000 rural habitations. To improve sanitation infrastructure, Rs 1,777 crore has been allotted for 17 underground sewerage projects, while another Rs 6,655 crore is being invested in the integrated development of water bodies and public parks. Highlighting the emphasis on connectivity, the report said the road infrastructure has seen a major push, with Rs 4,673 crore spent on upgrading over 9,000 km of urban roads, and Rs 3,057 crore sanctioned for 8,065 new roadworks. The government has also constructed 28 new bus stands and approved 99 more, with a total allocation of Rs 1,120 crore. Over 3.65 lakh streetlights and LED lighting systems have been installed across urban areas. Under the Smart Cities Mission, 11 Corporations are undergoing development with a total investment of Rs 10,639 crore. In suburban Chennai, more than 100 km of stormwater drains have been laid to mitigate urban flooding. To boost educational infrastructure, the report said that 1,384 new classrooms have been added in Corporation and Municipal schools, and 100 libraries and knowledge centres are being set up across the state. The Urban Employment Scheme has generated over 12 lakh man-days of work. The report also notes the commissioning of Tamil Nadu's largest desalination plant at Nemmeli, which will provide drinking water to around nine lakh people. In a move towards inclusive governance, new welfare schemes have been introduced to support sanitation workers in becoming entrepreneurs. The government's grievance redressal platforms -- Makkaludan Mudhalvar and Mudhalvarin Mugavari -- have resolved over 98 per cent of citizen petitions, the release added.

The Leader of Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, on Sunday (June 8, 2025) said DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is daydreaming of DMK-led coalition winning over 200 seats in 2026 Assembly polls. Addressing party cadre at Arakkonam MLA S. Ravi's son's wedding in Arakkonam, Mr. Palaniswami said Mr. Stalin has been saying that the DMK-led coalition will win more than 200 Assembly seats in the upcoming election next year. 'He (Mr. Stalin) is day-dreaming about it. It is AIADMK -led front that will form the next government in the State after the 2026 polls. More political parties will be joining the AIADMK coalition soon, strengthening its alliance,' he said. Taking credit for creation of new districts in Tamil Nadu and other welfare measures, the former Chief Minister said during the AIADMK regime between 2016 - 2021, six new districts were formed in the State. Districts like Ranipet and Tirupattur were formed after bifurcating Vellore. Such a formation has helped to focus on backward areas in the newly-formed districts. 'During the AIADMK regime, 11 new medical colleges, six law colleges and additional engineering and agricultural colleges were opened in the State. On the contrary, DMK is pasting stickers on those schemes and re-introduces them as new schemes,' he said. The AIADMK supremo wondered what happened to the poll promises made by DMK during its campaign in the 2021 elections. For example, he said, the DMK promised to voters that when the party (DMK) comes to power, steps will be taken to construct new check dams to a tune of ₹2,000 crore in Tamil Nadu. 'How many new check dams has the DMK government built so far in the State? Every monsoon, a huge quantity of excess rainwater goes unutilized as the water flows into the sea,' he said. Mr. Palaniswami blamed DMK government for dumping its pro-poor and farmers welfare schemes like Amma clinics and kudimaramathu scheme where farmers were allowed to remove silt deposited in ponds and lakes in the area. The scheme has twin benefits, namely it helps to deepen waterbodies to store excess rainwater and secondly farmers can use silt to enrich their farmland, he said. The AIADMK leader said that 3,460 government students in Tamil Nadu were able to pursue medicine currently because of the AIADMK initiative where it introduced 7.5% horizontal reservation for students of government schools in medical admissions, which is being implemented since the 2020-21 academic year, he said. On the occasion, former AIADMK Minister and Tirupattur district in-charge for AIADMK K.C. Veeramani, party functionaries and cadre were present.

CM Stalin tells cadre to scale up digital outreach; focuses on membership drive at meeting
CHENNAI: In a three-hour long online meeting with party functionaries on Saturday, DMK president and Chief Minister MK Stalin stressed on the importance of strengthening digital outreach by appointing booth digital agents at every polling booth across the state, and called for the involvement of youth wing cadre in booth committees, as the party is aiming for a massive win in the 2026 election. Stalin convened the online meeting with district secretaries, MLAs, MPs, and the party's 234 constituency observers to discuss strategies for implementing 'Oraniyil Tamil Nadu', the membership drive announced at the general council meeting in Madurai. Youth wing secretary and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin assured the active participation of the wing in the membership exercise. Stalin told the participants that he would closely monitor the daily activities of booth committees and urged them to ensure that committee members reach out to voters in every household.
