CM Stalin's ambition of winning over 200 seats in 2026 Assembly election is a daydream: Edappadi Palaniswami
The Leader of Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, on Sunday (June 8, 2025) said DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is daydreaming of DMK-led coalition winning over 200 seats in 2026 Assembly polls.
Addressing party cadre at Arakkonam MLA S. Ravi's son's wedding in Arakkonam, Mr. Palaniswami said Mr. Stalin has been saying that the DMK-led coalition will win more than 200 Assembly seats in the upcoming election next year. 'He (Mr. Stalin) is day-dreaming about it. It is AIADMK -led front that will form the next government in the State after the 2026 polls. More political parties will be joining the AIADMK coalition soon, strengthening its alliance,' he said.
Taking credit for creation of new districts in Tamil Nadu and other welfare measures, the former Chief Minister said during the AIADMK regime between 2016 - 2021, six new districts were formed in the State. Districts like Ranipet and Tirupattur were formed after bifurcating Vellore. Such a formation has helped to focus on backward areas in the newly-formed districts. 'During the AIADMK regime, 11 new medical colleges, six law colleges and additional engineering and agricultural colleges were opened in the State. On the contrary, DMK is pasting stickers on those schemes and re-introduces them as new schemes,' he said.
The AIADMK supremo wondered what happened to the poll promises made by DMK during its campaign in the 2021 elections. For example, he said, the DMK promised to voters that when the party (DMK) comes to power, steps will be taken to construct new check dams to a tune of ₹2,000 crore in Tamil Nadu. 'How many new check dams has the DMK government built so far in the State? Every monsoon, a huge quantity of excess rainwater goes unutilized as the water flows into the sea,' he said.
Mr. Palaniswami blamed DMK government for dumping its pro-poor and farmers welfare schemes like Amma clinics and kudimaramathu scheme where farmers were allowed to remove silt deposited in ponds and lakes in the area. The scheme has twin benefits, namely it helps to deepen waterbodies to store excess rainwater and secondly farmers can use silt to enrich their farmland, he said.
The AIADMK leader said that 3,460 government students in Tamil Nadu were able to pursue medicine currently because of the AIADMK initiative where it introduced 7.5% horizontal reservation for students of government schools in medical admissions, which is being implemented since the 2020-21 academic year, he said.
On the occasion, former AIADMK Minister and Tirupattur district in-charge for AIADMK K.C. Veeramani, party functionaries and cadre were present.

Karnataka Police Had Issued Pre-Event Warning Before Fatal Bengaluru Stampede
New revelations show that senior police officials had explicitly warned the Karnataka government about potential security lapses and overcrowding risks before the Royal Challengers Bengaluru victory celebration that resulted in a tragic stampede claiming 11 lives on June 4. An official letter written on the morning of the incident by Deputy Commissioner of Police MN Karibasavana Gowda has exposed that authorities were forewarned about the dangers of hosting the felicitation event at Vidhana Soudha. The communication, sent to top government officials, outlined specific concerns about crowd management and inadequate security arrangements. Gowda, who oversaw legislature security, addressed his warning to G Sathyavathi, Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms. His letter explicitly stated that "lakhs of cricket fans are likely to come to Vidhana Soudha" and emphasized that insufficient security personnel would create significant challenges for crowd control and safety management. The police official's correspondence highlighted critical infrastructure deficiencies, particularly noting the absence of proper CCTV surveillance coverage in the sensitive government zone. He stressed that the combination of massive expected attendance and security shortfalls would create a potentially dangerous situation during the RCB celebration event. Despite these advance warnings, the event received official approval from authorities. The letter was reportedly shared with then-Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, who further escalated the concerns to Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh. However, the celebration proceeded as planned, ultimately resulting in the deadly crowd surge. Hours before the tragic incident occurred, senior IAS officer G Sathyavathi, who was responsible for managing the Vidhana Soudha event, publicly urged fans to relocate to the nearby stadium instead. The RCB team was initially honored at the legislature building before celebrations continued at the stadium, but the crowd management issues had already reached critical levels. The aftermath of the stampede led to immediate administrative action, with B Dayananda being suspended by Karnataka's home department just one day after the incident. Officials cited serious planning and coordination failures during the RCB victory celebrations as the reason for his removal from the position. The tragedy has sparked intense political controversy, with the Bharatiya Janata Party launching sharp criticism against the Congress-led state government. Union Minister G Kishan Reddy condemned what he termed "complete failure in crowd management," arguing that authorities should have anticipated the massive turnout following RCB's historic IPL victory. Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy directly blamed Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar for the incident, characterizing it as the result of "impatience, immaturity, and irresponsibility." He questioned whether such a hastily organized felicitation ceremony was necessary given the obvious risks involved. Union Minister and BJP leader Shobha Karandlaje criticized the decision to use Vidhana Soudha's grand staircase for a private team's celebration, noting that the iconic venue had traditionally been reserved for official state functions and swearing-in ceremonies. She accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar of having "blood on their hands" while attempting to shift blame onto police officers. Karandlaje also defended the suspended police commissioner, describing B Dayananda as "a good and honest officer" who was being unfairly scapegoated for the administrative failures of political leadership. In response to the mounting criticism, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar issued a public apology while accusing the BJP of politicizing the tragedy. He acknowledged the government's responsibility and promised to implement better safety protocols for future events to prevent similar incidents. Legal action has been initiated in connection with the stampede, with police filing a First Information Report against multiple parties. The FIR names Royal Challengers Bengaluru, DNA Entertainment (the event organizer), and the Karnataka State Cricket Association, which manages the stadium. Authorities have stated that no formal permission was granted for the stadium portion of the celebrations. The investigation has already resulted in arrests, with Bengaluru Police confirming the detention of RCB's marketing and revenue head, Nikhil Sosale, on Friday. This development suggests that accountability measures are being pursued against both organizational and administrative parties involved in the event planning and execution.

'Daydreaming', EPS dismisses CM Stalin's 2026 Assembly election target
Leader of Opposition and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) on Sunday dismissed Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's claim that the DMK-led coalition would win over 200 seats in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, calling it a 'daydream'. Speaking at the wedding of Arakkonam MLA S. Ravi's son, Palaniswami said, 'Stalin is daydreaming when he says his alliance will secure more than 200 Assembly seats in the next polls. It is, in fact, the AIADMK-led front that will form the next government in Tamil Nadu after 2026.' He also asserted that more political parties would soon join the AIADMK alliance, further strengthening its position. Highlighting achievements of the AIADMK during its previous tenure from 2016 to 2021, Palaniswami took credit for the creation of six new districts in Tamil Nadu, including Ranipet and Tirupattur, which were carved out of Vellore. He said the formation of these new administrative units enabled a better focus on underdeveloped regions. The former Chief Minister also listed several educational initiatives launched during the AIADMK regime, including the establishment of 11 new medical colleges, six law colleges, and additional engineering and agricultural colleges. "On the contrary, the DMK government is merely relaunching our schemes under new names by pasting their stickers on them,' he alleged. Palaniswami questioned the DMK's 2021 poll promise to build check dams worth Rs 2,000 crore across Tamil Nadu. 'How many check dams has the DMK government built so far? Every monsoon, excess rainwater simply drains into the sea due to poor planning,' he said. He further criticised the DMK for discontinuing pro-poor schemes introduced by the AIADMK, such as Amma Clinics and the Kudimaramathu initiative, which allowed farmers to desilt local waterbodies. 'This not only deepened water storage areas but also provided nutrient-rich silt for farmlands,' he said. Palaniswami also cited the AIADMK's introduction of the 7.5 per cent horizontal reservation for government school students in medical admissions as a landmark initiative. 'Thanks to this, 3,460 government school students have been able to pursue medicine since the 2020-21 academic year,' he said. The event was attended by former Minister and Tirupattur district in-charge K.C. Veeramani, along with several AIADMK functionaries and party cadre.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, his Cabinet colleagues, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Mahesh Kumar Goud and senior officials attended the ceremony. Vivek took oath in English while the remaining two were sworn in Telugu. This is the first expansion in the Cabinet, which was formed on December 7, 2023, with the swearing-in of the Chief Minister and 11 ministers. The long-delayed expansion took place after the All India Congress Committee (AICC) cleared the names of three ministers. Though there are vacancies in the Cabinet, the party leadership decided to keep three posts vacant. The state can have a maximum of 18 ministers, including the Chief Minister. Vivek Venkataswamy, a former MP and son of former Union Minister G. Venkataswamy, and Government Whip Adluri Laxman are from the Scheduled Castes, while Srihari is from the Backward Classes. After the Telangana Bill was passed in the Parliament in 2014, he returned to Congress. He again returned to the TRS in 2016. In 2019, he resigned as advisor to the Telangana government and quit the ruling party after he was denied a ticket to contest from the Peddapalli Lok Sabha seat. He joined the BJP, which he quit again in November 2023 to return to Congress. He was elected to the Assembly from Chennur constituency in Mancherial district in 2023, defeating sitting MLA Balka Suman of BRS. Adluri Laxman Kumar is a senior Congress leader and first-time MLA from Dharmapuri in Jagitial district. Srihari, who began his political career as a Youth Congress leader, has also been associated with Congress for over three decades. He was elected to the Assembly from the Makthal Assembly constituency in Narayanpet district.
