Driver in fatal Temerloh crash charged with drug trafficking and reckless driving
TEMERLOH, June 18 — The car driver involved in a road crash that resulted in the death of two teenage girls was charged in the Magistrate's Court here today with trafficking more than 50 grammes of Methamphetamine last week.
Chun Kok Keong, 38, of Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, is charged with committing the offence in front of the lobby of the Temerloh District Police Headquarters at about 12.30 am on June 12 this year.
The charge, under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, provides the death penalty or life imprisonment and not less than 15 strokes of the cane in the absence of the death penalty, upon conviction.
No plea was recorded from Chun, who works as a customer service officer, after the charge was read out before Magistrate Tan Chiew King, as the case is under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
Chun was also charged with possessing heroin weighing about 0.85 grammes at the same location and time under Section 12(2) of the same act.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge, which provides a maximum fine of RM100,000 or imprisonment for up to five years, or both, upon conviction.
The court allowed him bail of RM4,500 with one surety for the charge and set Sept 18 for mention.
Deputy public prosecutors Adriana Azrin and Siti Sarah Aqilah Lokman appeared for the prosecution, while Chun was represented by lawyer Siti Fatimah Mohd Shahril, from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
In the same court, Chun also pleaded not guilty to two charges of dangerous driving, which resulted in the death of Nur Erdina Shaffiya Muhammad Nazri and Aneez Irdiena Sofya Khairul Azman, both aged 18, at the traffic lights on Jalan Tengku Ismail, here at 10.50 pm, on June 11 this year.
The charge, under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), provides imprisonment for up to 10 years and a maximum fine of RM50,000 if convicted.
Chun was not allowed bail as he is also facing charges for drug trafficking, which is a non-bailable offence.
The court set July 17 for mention. — Bernama

'An investigation is ongoing with other related agencies involved to ensure the safety of the community. We advise the public to keep calm and not to spread unverified speculation regarding the incident,' he said.

Public Bank ordered to pay RM90mil in damages to NFC for confidentiality breach
The Federal Court has ordered Public Bank to pay RM30 million each in equitable, exemplary, and aggravated damages to National Feedlot Corporation and three others for disclosing its accounts to the public. PUTRAJAYA : The Federal Court has ruled that Public Bank must pay RM90 million in damages for violating its statutory duty and breaching confidentiality by disclosing to the public the National Feedlot Corporation's (NFC) accounts, along with those of three affiliated companies. A three-member bench led by Chief Judge of Malaya Hasnah Hashim ordered the bank to pay RM30 million each in equitable, exemplary, and aggravated damages. 'Public Bank is to pay 2% interest on the judgment sum effective today until the payment of damages is settled,' she said. Sitting with her were Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Abdul Rahman Sebli and Justice Abu Bakar Jais. The court dismissed Public Bank's appeal on liability last month. The Court of Appeal previously ruled that NFC had failed to prove its losses, resulting in the award of a nominal sum of RM10,000 in damages. Hasnah said the appeals court fell into error in its finding. 'The appellant (NFC) had produced financial reports and audited accounts through its expert witness,' she said, adding that the bank had not called any witnesses to challenge the witness's credibility. As such, the documents relied on by the appellants remained unchallenged, said Hasnah. In their statement of claim, NFC, its chairman Salleh Ismail, and its subsidiaries National Meat & Livestock Corporation Sdn Bhd and Agroscience Industries Sdn Bhd had asked for RM560 million in damages. They sought RM60 million in general damages and a total of RM500 million in aggravated and exemplary damages. Salleh is the husband of former Wanita Umno chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil. The case dates back to 2012 when then-PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli obtained confidential banking details which he used to support allegations against NFC regarding a government loan linked to property purchases. Lawyers Shafee Abdullah, Sarah Abishegam, and Farah Mustaffa represented the appellants, while counsel Chan Kok Keong, Poh Choo Hoe, and Tiang Min Hin appeared for the bank.

Cops hunt for 5 who escaped from rehab centre in Jelebu

PETALING JAYA : Police are searching for five of six trainees who escaped from the narcotics addiction rehabilitation (Puspen) centre in Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan, yesterday morning. Jelebu police chief Azizan Said said a report on the escapees, aged between 25 and 42, was lodged at 1am. He said one of them, a 35-year-old man, was recaptured within 24 hours near a factory at Kongkoi, Jelebu, some 5km from the centre. 'Police have launched an operation to track down the remaining escapees, with the assistance of the K9 unit from the Negeri Sembilan police headquarters and officers from the Jelebu branch of the National Anti-Drugs Agency,' Bernama reported him as saying. Azizan said the trainees still at large were P Tinogaran, 36, whose last known address is Apartment Taman Sentosa in Perak; G Vinaiyetiran, 36, from Taman Munsyi Ibrahim in Johor; V Manimaran, 38, from Taman Seri Bernam in Selangor; S Bala Ganes, 42, from Bandar Baru Sultan Suleiman, Selangor; and K Mohanarajh, 25, from Taman Bertuah in Perak. He urged members of the public with information to contact the nearest police station or the Jelebu police headquarters at 06-613 6222 or 06-613 7999. The case is being investigated under Sections 223 and 224 of the Penal Code for escape from confinement and resistance to lawful apprehension.
