What Fremantle Dockers need to go right to secure a top four spot and finals double chance

West Australian2 days ago
Fremantle's come-from-behind win over Carlton has put them in the mix for a spot in the top four, but the Dockers will need to cheer against both Queensland teams in the final weeks of the season.
Justin Longmuir's side moved to fifth, just one win behind ladder-leaders Adelaide and level on points with fourth-placed Geelong.
The Dockers face embattled Port Adelaide on the road this weekend, followed by a blockbuster Friday night clash with Brisbane at home and a season-ending date with the Western Bulldogs.
But even if Fremantle win their final three matches — which would have them finishing the season with a barnstorming 13 wins from 14 games — they will still need results to go their way to jag a double chance.
It puts a spotlight on the final three games for Brisbane, including their match with the Dockers, and the final four games of Gold Coast's season.
The Suns will enter all four of their remaining matches as favourites.
They play Carlton at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night, then host Greater Western Sydney and play both Port Adelaide and Essendon in round 24 because their clash with the Bombers was postponed from Opening Round.
The Giants, who are themselves still fighting to secure their ticket to September, appear the most likely team to challenge the high-flying Suns who have been practically unstoppable at home this year.
The Lions face Sydney at the Gabba on Saturday before heading west to play Fremantle. The Dockers will likely need the reigning premiers to slip up either against the Swans, or at home against Hawthorn in the final round.
If other results go as expected, the Dockers will play a finals series for just the second time since 2015 if they win one of their remaining games.
Their match against the Power comes after Ken Hinkley's final weeks in the coaching chair were marred by back-to-back thumpings. They lost the Showdown to Adelaide by 98 points and were belted by Geelong to the tune of 88 points on Sunday.
While the Suns' rescheduled match against Essendon will be played midweek after the final round, it appears likely the AFL will fixture a Sunday night match in round 24.
That is likely to either be the Lions' clash with the Hawks or the Dockers' final match with the Bulldogs, given both games could have ramifications for the top four and the top eight.
Fremantle could also jump into the four if wobbly Collingwood lose two of their three matches.
They would have a close eye on Thursday night's clash with finals aspirants Hawthorn and on their round 23 meeting with new ladder-leaders Adelaide.

Last-round fixture sets Suns a task in AFL finals bid

Gold Coast will have a short five-day break to prepare for the crucial clash with Essendon that could decide whether the expansion club reaches the AFL finals for the first time. The league on Wednesday confirmed the schedule of matches for round 24, with the Suns and Bombers to do battle in the last game of the home-and-away season. Their fixture - which had to be rescheduled from opening round because of Tropical Cyclone Alfred - will take place at People First Stadium on Wednesday, August 27. Round 24 opens six days earlier on August 21, when Essendon take on old rivals Carlton in a dead rubber. The Friday night offers a rare double-header, with flag hopefuls Collingwood taking on Melbourne, and Port Adelaide hosting Gold Coast in coach Ken Hinkley's final game in charge. Top-four contenders Geelong and Adelaide are both in action on Saturday, but the Sunday fixture looms as the highlight of round 24. It starts with GWS hosting St Kilda at Engie Stadium, before a super Sunday when Western Bulldogs meet Fremantle at Marvel Stadium and the Brisbane Lions take on Hawthorn at the Gabba. The Suns-Bombers clash is then set to determine the exact finishing positions of the top eight. 'While it's unconventional, we're looking forward to rounding out what has already been a historic home-and-away season for the club here at People First Stadium on a Wednesday night,' Gold Coast chief executive Mark Evans said. The Suns, who sit sixth with a 13-6 record, are aiming to play finals for the first time since joining the AFL in 2011. Their game in hand gives them an advantage over other teams currently locked in a tight battle for finals spots. Just two wins separate first-placed Adelaide from GWS in eighth, with the Bulldogs one win further back with a strong percentage. Only nine teams are realistically still in the finals hunt with three rounds left to play. Of the 10 fixtures across the last week of the home-and-away season, eight will have a bearing on the finals make-up.

AFL reveals round 24 fixture and date of rescheduled Opening Round match

Gold Coast will be forced to tackle what looms as a maiden finals campaign with a shorter rest than the other seven contenders after the final round fixture confirmed an 'unconventional' finish to the season. The Suns' rescheduled clash with Essendon, which wasn't played in the Opening Round due to the impact of Cyclone Alfred, will be played on the Gold Coast on the Wednesday after the scheduled finish to the regular season. It will come after the Suns have to travel to Adelaide for a Friday night clash with Port Adelaide and means Gold Coast will prepare for its first finals tilt with a shorter pre-finals break than the other seven finalists. 'While it's unconventional, we're looking forward to rounding out what has already been a historic home-and-away season for the club here at People First Stadium on a Wednesday night,' Suns chief executive Mark Evans said. While Essendon coach Brad Scott on Tuesday said he was reluctant to send players into the off-season early, his injury-plagued group will need to play two games in six days. The two matches that are poised to shape the eight will be played on the Sunday, with Western Bulldogs hosting Fremantle and Brisbane welcoming Hawthorn. The Bulldogs and Dockers could be playing for a spot in the eight, while the Hawks' upcoming fortnight will decide the importance of their bout with the Lions. The Saturday features a trio of games that won't shape the eight, but the Geelong-Richmond match could determine star Cat Jeremy Cameron's pursuit of 100 goals. 'Round 24 is set to deliver an exciting finish to the home-and-away season, with several matches likely to influence the final eight,' AFL head of strategy and scheduling Josh Bowler said. 'The round will start on Thursday night and finish the following Wednesday to provide the Gold Coast Suns and Essendon sufficient days' break between matches, with their rescheduled Opening Round match being played during round 24 in addition to their respective clashes against Carlton and Port Adelaide. 'To avoid a clash between the Western Bulldogs' round 24 AFL match and their round 2 AFLW match, we have also adjusted the start time of the AFLW match between Richmond and the Western Bulldogs on Sunday, 24 August, and subsequently the AFLW match between Essendon and the West Coast Eagles. 'The revised start times give Bulldogs fans the opportunity to watch both their club's teams play on the same day, and we thank everyone involved in working through these changes.' AFL ROUND 24 Thursday, August 21 Essendon v Carlton, MCG, 7.30pm Friday, August 22 Collingwood v Melbourne, MCG, 7.10pm – Port Adelaide v Gold Coast, Adelaide Oval, 8.10pm Saturday, August 23 North Melbourne v Adelaide, Marvel Stadium, 1.20pm Richmond v Geelong, MCG, 4.15pm West Coast v Sydney, Optus Stadium, 7.35pm Sunday, August 24 GWS v St Kilda, Engie Stadium, 12.20pm Western Bulldogs v Fremantle, Marvel Stadium, 3.15pm Brisbane v Hawthorn, Gabba, 7.20pm Wednesday, August 27
