Kota Kinabalu: The Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) announced stricter enforcement for this year's State-level Kaamatan celebrations, promising a more organised, family-friendly and culturally respectful event. KDCA Deputy President and Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said the festival, set to culminate on May 30 and 31 at the KDCA grounds in Penampang, would no longer tolerate unruly behaviour such as table dancing, excessive drinking, or music blaring past permitted hours. 'Last year, we saw several issues, including noise complaints and operators violating closing hours. 'This year, all music will stop by 1am sharp, and stricter penalties will be imposed for any breaches,' he told a press conference, Thursday. Traditional houses are expected to uphold cultural authenticity and only serve traditional foods and drinks. He said operators caught selling non-traditional alcoholic beverages or remaining open beyond permitted hours risk being compounded up to RM1,000.
Advertisement 'Last year, six houses were fined for such violations… We want the celebration to reflect our rich culture, not over-indulgence,' he stressed. KDCA also reduced stall rental fees this year, with rates starting as low as RM2,500 compared to RM7,000 last year in a move to promote broader participation and economic inclusivity. The issue of overpriced food items has been publicly criticised for years, with regular allegations of monopoly through subleasing stall lots. Multiple viral videos showing the consequences of excessive drinking at the fairgrounds have become the subject of ridicule by certain quarters, ironically dubbed the 'spirit' of the KDMR. Jeffrey hopes the event will attract not just local visitors but also investors who see potential in Sabah's culture and biodiversity. Festival highlights include the rebranding of the iconic Mr Kaamatan competition to Buvazoi Tavantang Kaamatan, increased inter-state participation and continued collaboration with international partners like the Food and Culture Organisation and International Union for Conservation of Nature. On top of the cultural celebration, programmes such as Seed Spirit Revival linked to global biodiversity and food security initiatives will also take centre stage. In a statement posted on his social media, Fahmi recounted arriving at KLIA2 at around 7.30am to catch a 9.35am flight for a short two-day trip to attend a concert featuring South Korean band Slant and Singaporean act Sial. 'I was asked to wait while they checked with TCO (Travel Control Office/Order). Then they took my passport and IC for photocopying. They also wanted printed copies of my boarding pass and e-ticket, even though I had them on my phone,' he wrote, adding that with only 10 minutes left before boarding, an airport staff member helped him get the documents printed at a hotel nearby. When he returned to Immigration with the documents, Fahmi said an officer told him, 'Bukit Aman has not given clearance for you to leave the country.' He said no explanation was provided and he was escorted out of the departure area. Advertisement Fahmi is well known for his satirical illustrations that often critique political leaders and institutions. He believes the ban is linked to his artwork criticising the recent appointment of former Sabah chief minister Tun Musa Aman as the state's new Yang di-Pertua Negeri. Just weeks earlier, on May 29, the Sabah Immigration Department had denied Fahmi entry into the state under Section 65(1)(a) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. He said he was flown back to Kuala Lumpur the same day without further explanation. That incident followed his earlier arrest by Sabah police in February this year over another satirical post. Authorities had opened investigations under the Sedition Act for allegedly insulting the royal institution. 'Last week I was blacklisted from entering Sabah. This week, I'm blacklisted from leaving the country,' he wrote. ‘Upin' and ‘Ipin' in line for Aidiladha sacrifice
SHAH ALAM: Upin and Ipin will be sacrificed for Aidiladha today. No, not the lovable comic characters – these are two premium Limousin cattle, weighing 780kg and 800kg respectively. Upin and Ipin are among 22 gigantic cattle to be sacrificed at the Tayyib Ranch Qurban Carnival at Shah Alam Stadium. Tayyib Ranch managing director Mohd Sakhedan Sidek said Upin and Ipin, which were sold to different buyers for RM20,000 and RM26,000, will be slaughtered tomorrow The Limousin is a French breed of beef cattle from the Limousin and Manche regions of France. Heavy-muscled cattle from other premium breeds such as Brahman, Charolais, Blonde and Black Angus will also be slaughtered at the event. 'The cattle, aged between three and four years, were brought in from Kelantan and Terengganu. 'They weigh between 700kg and 1,000kg and are priced from RM10,000 to RM45,000 each,' he told Bernama. Mohd Sakhedan said demand for such cattle continued to rise each year, for sacrificial rites performed by Muslims during Hari Raya Aidiladha. 'Huge cattle are preferred for their meat yield and superior quality, making them ideal for distribution to the underprivileged as a valuable source of nutritious food,' he said. Mohd Sakhedan said a total of 100 cattle will be slaughtered over a continuous 48-hour period until tomorrow. 'We have also received approval from the Selangor Islamic Religious Department to perform prayers at the carnival site, followed by a communal feast,' he added.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian actress Saidah Kamarudin has revealed the reasons behind her decision to call off her engagement to fellow actor Muhammad Muntazar Ghufran in October last year. The former couple became engaged in May 2024, following a year of dating. In a recent interview, Saidah, 29, cited financial instability as a primary factor in her decision to end the wedding plans. She claimed that Muntazar, 22, had only RM500 in his bank account. "You should be looking for a job or continuing your studies," she lamented. The actress further alleged that following their breakup, Muntazar hacked into her TikTok account and posted fabricated comments under her name in an attempt to damage her reputation. It's understood that Saidah filed a police report at the Setia Alam police station in Shah Alam, Selangor, on May 31. "When Muntazar and I were still together, we shared the passwords to our social media accounts. After we broke up, I changed my passwords and removed all access." Meanwhile, Muntazar has refuted Saidah's claims that he was unable to afford their wedding. The actor explained that he told her he had additional funds invested in unit trusts. "I told Saidah about it, but she told me that's investment savings and not actual money. If it's true that I have only RM500 in savings, how is it possible for me to pay close to RM1,000 monthly for my car while also giving my family around RM1,000?" he argued.
