Sabah's east coast not just safe, but thriving, says Home Minister

The Star05-07-2025
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's east coast is no longer just a safe zone, it has become a thriving region that has been transformed by peace, prosperity and growing global confidence, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
The Home Minister said that the region, once marred by past security incidents, was now seeing tourism flourish and local livelihoods improve, a clear result of sustained peace and targeted development.
'Security is no longer the only story here. It is about transformation. What we see today is the direct outcome of peace: jobs, income, and thriving tourism,' said Saifuddin during a site visit to Semporna's islands with a delegation of foreign diplomats and officials on Saturday (July 5).
Also present was state Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.
Saifuddin noted that tourist arrivals to Sabah's east coast have more than quadrupled since 2022.
Official figures show 64,470 tourist arrivals in 2022, which jumped to 313,128 in 2023 and reached 319,479 by the end of May 2024.
'These are not just tourists from anywhere. Many are from countries that previously issued travel advisories. This surge in visitors is living proof that the perception is changing, people are coming back, and in bigger numbers,' Saifuddin said.
He said that countries such as Japan are already reviewing their travel advisories following previous diplomatic engagements, adding that progress is being made with others like the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia.
'These advisories still hold weight and affect public perception. That is why we do not wait for second-hand assumptions, we invite foreign representatives to experience the situation for themselves,' he told reporters.
He shared an example of one of the emerging success stories at Kampung Indra Sabah, a quiet island village now gaining traction among divers and eco-tourists, where the community, once dependent solely on fishing, had begun to pivot towards tourism, offering homestays, boat services, and cultural experiences.
'The peace we have built here is opening up new avenues for locals. Families are earning more, young people are finding jobs without having to leave home, and small businesses are growing,' said Saifuddin.
Saifuddin stressed that the region's turnaround is not accidental, but a result of coordinated efforts under the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) and alignment with the Federal Government's Madani Economic Framework.
'Peace is not just the absence of conflict. It is the presence of opportunity. Sabah's east coast is proof that when security is guaranteed, prosperity follows. This is the MADANI vision in action, empowering communities and uplifting lives,' he said.
He added that face-to-face engagements with international stakeholders remain the ministry's preferred strategy in changing outdated perceptions.
'There is no substitute for direct experience. We want them to see, hear, and understand what Sabah really is today,' he said.
With positive changes taking root, Saifuddin said the ultimate goal is for countries to revise travel warnings that no longer reflect the current reality.
'Look at the visitor numbers, the thriving communities, the booming tourism sector. This is not just about being safe. It is about a region that's alive, ambitious, and on the rise,' he said.
Meanwhile, he gave top marks to ESSCom and its partner agencies for their seamless coordination in safeguarding the state's east coast.
He highlighted how security forces across nine districts are working in synchronisation, with rotational deployments ensuring a constant presence on land and sea, noting that Malaysia's chairmanship of ASEAN this year has boosted joint operations, intelligence sharing, and evolving cross-border strategies, reinforcing the region's stability.
To complement these efforts, Saifuddin said tourism police units are being strengthened to provide on-the-ground support to travellers.
Their presence ensures quick assistance, helps build trust among foreign visitors, and contributes to a more secure and welcoming environment across key tourism zones.
Saifuddin took the foreign visitors to visit four islands in Semporna, namely Omadal, Sibuan, Bohey Dulang, and Mataking.

LAHAD DATU: The coastal attractions of Lahad Datu are starting to gain interest from European travellers who once came mainly for its forests and wildlife. Tabin Wildlife Reserve and Danum Valley have long been the main stops, but snorkelling and island visits are now seeing a rise in demand. Advertisement District Officer Firuz Idzualdeen Mohd Dzul said stronger security, particularly patrols by Esscom, has given visitors the confidence to explore maritime spots that were once overlooked. 'This change in interest, especially from Europeans, is encouraging. In the past, they preferred forest areas, perhaps because they were seen as safer,' he said. Lahad Datu's waters include Pulau Tabawan, the Blue Ring Reef and coral habitats that remain intact and undamaged. Tour operators Robin Demowal and Sabar Jiran said more tourists are now arriving from countries such as Germany, Austria, Italy and Australia. They emphasised that visitors who were previously cautious are now taking boat trips and enjoying the coastline after seeing the security presence for themselves. Both operators hope the government, through relevant agencies, will expand promotion of Lahad Datu as a key marine tourism destination in Sabah. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Joniston applauds formation of Tawau Tourism Working Group

Joniston greeting Tawau tourism players. TAWAU (July 29): Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai has commended tourism stakeholders here for taking the initiative to form a dedicated Tawau Tourism Working Group. Joniston, who also chairs the Sabah Tourism Board (STB), described such an initiative as a timely step towards driving more structured and impactful tourism efforts in the district. 'This shows there is energy and drive within the industry. A focused and functional working group will be a good platform to push new ideas, close gaps, and advocate for the kind of support that tourism in Tawau deserves,' he said during an engagement session with stakeholders here. Organised by STB, the engagement session gathered representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), Royal Malaysian Customs Department, Immigration Department, Tawau airport, and key tourism players in Tawau. At the same time, Joniston emphasised that the involvement of local authorities is equally crucial, as their role complements grassroots tourism initiatives, especially efforts to develop rural areas and ensure alignment with district-level planning. He stressed local authorities and District Tourism Action Committees need to be in the thick of tourism-related development, given their responsibilities in local planning, development and socio-economic growth. 'Their participation is not just expected but necessary, as tourism is one of the key pillars under the Sabah Maju Jaya development agenda, and it cannot thrive without shared responsibility,' he said. Joniston reaffirmed that the Sabah Tourism Board remains committed to supporting grassroots initiatives to strengthen tourism development at the district level. Present were STB chief executive officer Julinus Jeffrey Jimit, Sabah MOTAC director Ibrahim Othman, and Tourism Malaysia Sabah director Haryanty Abu Bakar, among others. During the engagement session, Julinus shared ongoing initiatives, key strategies and future directions in line with the Explore Sabah campaign.

Home Minister hails Immigration as ‘face of the nation' as Malaysian passport power ranks 8th globally

PUTRAJAYA, July 21 – Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has today praised the Immigration Department for its pivotal role in shaping the country's global reputation, calling it the 'face of the country' for investors, tourists, expatriates, and foreign workers. Speaking at the department's 103rd anniversary celebration, Saifuddin highlighted how every economic component from tourism to foreign investments is closely linked to immigration services. 'At 103 years old, let us share some pride in the Immigration department. The Malaysian passport is now ranked 8th globally according to the 2025 Passport Index,' he said during the opening ceremony in front of Immigration headquarters in Putrajaya here, referring to the Passport Power Rank. He explained that a strong passport ranking means greater international access, with Malaysians enjoying visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to 170 countries. 'This is not just the result of legal frameworks, but reflects the efficiency of our Immigration Department in handling documentation and maintaining the country's reputation globally,' Saifuddin said. He added that this efficiency had also made Malaysia the top destination for medical tourism, with 1.2 million overseas patients recorded in 2024. Saifuddin said immigration success contributes directly to national growth, especially through a user-friendly and swift visa system. On tourism, he stressed that immigration officers serve as the frontliners who welcome visitors to Malaysia, especially critical as the country plays host to Asean this year. He also noted that in the past, Immigration was slow to adopt AI, but that has now changed. 'Besides having AI as a tool, we now have systems with flawless language capabilities both in English and Bahasa Malaysia. These tools are here to help. We can either embrace them or be left behind.' 'AI adoption must lead to improved productivity, faster service delivery, and better collections. These are key performance indicators for progress.' Saifuddin cited China's Alibaba as an example of AI's power, handling over 230,000 online transactions in a single second. He also revealed that the Human Resources Ministry has begun sending batches of officers to local universities to develop AI knowledge and capabilities. 'If we're behind the AI curve for three years, and we delay any longer, we'll fall 30 years behind. That's why I'm proud to be here today to support Immigration's reform journey as it embraces the AI era in line with this year's theme of 'AI Leads Immigration Reform',' he concluded.
