Could Ami Bera run against Kevin Kiley for CA House seat next year?
The redistricting plan unveiled Friday is aimed at reducing the nine-member California Republican House delegation by adding Democrats to five GOP-held districts.
Kiley, a Republican, won his 2024 race by 11 percentage points. His current district includes the east Sacramento metro area, bumping up against Democrat Bera's Sacramento County district.
Under the new map, parts of Bera's current district would wind up on Kiley's turf, and would also include include Folsom, which Bera represented before lines were redrawn after the 2020 census.
Bera, who is also considering running in his current Sixth District, would not comment on where he would run.
'I intend to continue representing the Sacramento region in the next Congress,' he said. 'Right now, we must stop Donald Trump and the Texas Republicans from gerrymandering their way to a House majority.'
Kiley sent a statement prior to the release of the map Friday, saying 'Make no mistake, I will win reelection to the House regardless of the proposed changes to my district.'
He added that ' I fully expect that the beautiful Third District will remain exactly as it is. We will defeat Newsom's sham initiative and vindicate the will of California voters.'
A Bera-Kiley race would pit two of northern California's up-and-coming congressional stars in a match that would command national attention.
Bera, 60, former Sacramento County chief medical officer, was first elected to Congress in 2012. A physician, he's been steadily gaining clout among House Democrats, and was involved in the strategy that led to the redistricting plan announced Friday. He's the top Democrat on the House East Asia and Pacific Subcommittee.
Kiley, 40, was first elected in 2022. He chairs the House Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education Subcommittee.
The new maps are aimed at giving Democrats more winnable seats in next year's mid-term elections. Democrats need a net gain of three seats next year to win control of the House, but Texas and some other Republican-led states are trying to redraw district lines to make GOP wins easier.
The next step for California is for the state legislature to approve a special election in November to approve the lines, which would be in effect until redrawn maps are implemented after the 2030 census.

During the Biden administration, the green energy sector as a whole received something of a break in the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, with a slew of tax incentives for building out alternative-energy solutions. In its attempt to reverse this, President Donald Trump has tasked his administration to make the current subsidies harder to obtain. Thankfully for green energy companies, a theoretically influential lobbying group stepped in on Friday to push back against this effort. Numerous solar stocks popped on the news, including First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR), which rose a sturdy 11% by market close. A mighty lob by a lobbying group The business grouping behind Friday's pushback is the Data Center Coalition. News broke that the coalition sent a formal request to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to maintain the subsidy policy as it is, rather than changing it. The organization -- which lists as members Amazon, Oracle, and CoreWeave, among other prominent tech companies -- told Bessent that any regulatory roadblock limiting green energy solutions will hamper the development of artificial intelligence (AI). Many data center operators are currently building out their facilities to handle the vastly increased resource demands of AI. Melania Trump sends letter to Putin about abducted children
By Steve Holland ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump's wife, Melania Trump, raised the plight of children in Ukraine and Russia in a personal letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, two White House officials said on Friday. President Trump hand-delivered the letter to Putin during their summit talks in Alaska, the officials told Reuters. Slovenian-born Melania Trump was not on the trip to Alaska. The officials would not divulge the contents of the letter other than to say it mentioned the abductions of children resulting from the war in Ukraine. The existence of the letter was not previously reported. Russia's seizure of Ukrainian children has been a deeply sensitive one for Ukraine. Ukraine has called the abductions of tens of thousands of its children taken to Russia or Russian-occupied territory without the consent of family or guardians a war crime that meets the U.N. treaty definition of genocide. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy conveyed his gratitude to the first lady on his call with Trump on Saturday, Ukraine's foreign minister said. "This is a true act of humanism," Andrii Sybiha added on X. Previously Moscow has said it has been protecting vulnerable children from a war zone. The United Nations Human Rights Office has said Russia has inflicted suffering on millions of Ukrainian children and violated their rights since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Trump and Putin met for nearly three hours at a U.S. military base in Anchorage without reaching a ceasefire deal in the war in Ukraine.
