Who will start in goal for West Ham?

BBC News05-08-2025
West Ham were left with big gloves to fill this summer after goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was released in June. The 40-year-old Pole made more than 200 appearances in a seven-year spell for the Hammers but was deemed as surplus to requirement by head coach Graham Potter.Frenchman Alphonse Areola, 33, became Potter's first choice during the second half of last term but he will likely face stiff competition if the club do sign Victor John from Botafogo. Readers will see links with the keeper in our gossip post a little lower on this page. The 6ft 5in Brazilian has excelled during the past two years and he was a key member of the Rio de Janiero side's league and Copa Libertadores double in 2024. He was also in the team that defeated European champions Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 at the recent Club World Cup.His 2024-25 statistics make for excellent reading, especially when compared to Areola and the recently departed Fabianski. It is worth noting that the Premier League is a step up in level from the Brazilian top flight but the numbers do suggest that West Ham may well have unearthed a goalkeeping upgrade.

Roy Keane won't be exposed to hostility while on pundit duty

A 43-year-old Arsenal fan was convicted of headbutting Keane at a match at the Emirates Stadium in 2023, while the former Manchester United midfielder clashed with Ipswich supporters at Portman Road last season. But Keane, 54, has renewed his contract as a pundit with the broadcaster and will be at Old Trafford for United's opening game of the season against Arsenal on Sunday. Sky's chief sports officer Jonathan Licht said: 'It's our responsibility to make sure we don't expose any of our team to those sorts of incidents. 'He loves being part of the big games and we hope that will continue long into this deal.' Keane will once again form part of Sky's Premier League coverage this season along with the likes of Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards. 'Roy is a great guy, you want him on your team,' added Gary Hughes, director of football at Sky Sports. 'He's had a few incidents in the last couple of seasons, with Arsenal and Ipswich, and it does affect him. 'But ultimately he wants to be involved in the biggest games. He wants to be at Old Trafford for Manchester United against Arsenal.'

Liverpool would not cruise to title even with Alexander Isak

The Reds won the league by 10 points last season and have since splurged almost £300million on new signings. They have also had a £110m offer for Isak turned down by Newcastle, but the Sweden striker's future is still up in the air. Asked whether he thought Liverpool were likely to end up successful in their pursuit of Isak, Sky Sports pundit and former Reds defender Carragher said: 'Yeah, I think so, but I don't get this narrative of Liverpool are going to run away with it.' Carragher pointed to Liverpool's Community Shield defeat by Crystal Palace as evidence that the likes of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitike will take time to click. 'If you look at history, it could tell you that it's not just about having the best players, it's about having the best team, and sort of making that balance right, and at the weekend it didn't quite look right,' he said. 'I think we will have a title race, and I think there's a lot of talk. I think the great thing about football is what we actually saw on Sunday with Liverpool. It didn't look right. 'It tells me it's not just about spending lots of money and buying the best players, you've still got to manage that team and make it work and have a nice balance to it.' However, former Manchester United full-back Gary Neville believes landing Isak would make Liverpool big favourites to retain the title. 'Liverpool won it really comfortably last year and have had a great transfer window,' he said at the launch of Sky Sports' Premier League coverage. 'If they get Isak, which it looks like he's agitating for a move, then it will make them massive favourites. But Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, I think will push them closer than last year.'
