Isle of Man TT: Sign language interpreter makes event 'inclusive'
Providing a British Sign Language interpreter for some Isle of Man TT races makes the event "inclusive", those behind the service have said.Dubbed "Deaf TT", the service sees live captions for radio commentary provided on the event's website as well as British Sign Language interpreted coverage at a section of the grandstand during the final two days of racing. Launched in 2016 by the Manx Deaf Society, the initiative aims to make the event more accessible for those who cannot follow live spoken commentary. Chief executive Lucy Buxton said it enabled those with a hearing impairment to be on the "same playing field" as they were given the information as it happened.
"If you have to rely on someone else to get that information you sometimes feel as though you are an afterthought," she said.In the past, those who could not follow live coverage would rely on a summary of the race released in the evening, or would need to be told what had happened.Ms Buxton said as the TT was "so fast", as soon as someone explains what had just happened "they have missed the next thing".The service provided the "same access possibility, whether people choose to follow it or not", and meant that the TT "becomes quite an inclusive event", she continued.
Ms Buxton said the idea came about following a trip to see a Formula One race in Italy with her husband when a lack of English commentary demonstrated what it was like not to be able to follow what was being said. The service was developed after similar frustrations werE raised by the society's members in relation to the TT.The government now provides nine free seats at the Grandstand on both Friday and Saturday of race week, as well as organising the captions for commentary on the TT website. The signed commentary is provided by a visiting British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter UK organisation Cosign. As place names and people's names were finger spelt in BSL, organisers had to create their own vocabulary for brevity due the fast-paced racing. That included Cronk y Voddy becoming "road jump jump" and May Hill in Ramsey turning into "house of the vampires" due to a gothic looking house on the corner, Ms Buxton said. Similarly signs were created for the riders who were often mentioned in commentary, such as John McGuinness who is now the sign for a pint.BSL interpretor for the event Carol Kyle said it was a "privilege to make the races accessible to those who live on the island or visit" for the event. She said as the TT was a time trial, it could be "extremely challenging" explaining the person ahead on the road was not necessarily the person winning."But the enthusiasm of the commentators is very infectious, and hopefully I translate that enthusiasm, anticipation and speed so people get that feeling of the TT," she added.

Whithorn boxer says sport helped tackle her postnatal depression
A new mum has credited the sport of boxing with helping her recovery from postnatal McCallum became the first female boxer from Whithorn's Bravehearts Boxing Club to step into the ring last week when she competed at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in she lost her first bout, the 29-year-old said what really mattered was her victory over mental health challenges she faced after giving birth for the first time to her now three-year-old daughter."When I had Ella-Rose I was at my lowest," she said. "The Bravehearts gym saved my life." "It's different to any other mental health that you feel," she explained."You can get depression but the postnatal from having a baby is completely different."It makes you not want to be here anymore. People say you get the 'baby blues' but you don't realise how severe it can be."She said that was where the sport had come to her assistance."I found boxing and it's hard to explain, but I've gone from size 16 to size eight, feel brilliant and got my life back," she said. Natasha, who moved from Ayrshire to the remote town of Whithorn in south west Scotland 13 years ago, had no previous experience of boxing, but the internet helped her to find a club on her doorstep."Because of the size I was after I'd had my little one, I started Googling how to lose weight," she said."And boxing came up, as one of the hardest, but quickest ways to lose weight. So I tried it and I saw the weight falling off."I just got addicted to it, but it helps that you see the improvement in your body. I started looking in the mirror again and seeing the change helps you keep going."Now she says she feels "absolutely amazing"."I can't believe what I've done and how far I've come," she added."I never thought I'd see a way out of where I was, but I have." Natasha has recently launched her own cleaning business - the boxing club is one of her clients - and she is supported by partner John and family, although she banned them from watching her first fight."They're a great support but the boxing is something I've done on my own; it's my thing," she said."My mum's not keen to watch it anyway, and, being honest, I was also a little embarrassed that I might not box very well."I had Tom, my coach there, and there were others from the club supporting me, and that's what it was about." She said their backing had been amazing and they had had "huge smiles" on their faces since her fight."I never thought I'd be in a boxing ring, but I absolutely loved it," she added."I don't know if boxing is for everyone, but I'd recommend women give it a try."Whether you need a lift, something to focus on or not - you don't have to physically box people."She added: "I never realised what boxing training could do, but I know now, and it's given me my life back."I would definitely recommend it to anyone." 'Role model' Tom Jolly, who runs the Bravehearts club, said it was delighted with what she had achieved."We are an open and welcoming club at Bravehearts and it's been great to see more girls and women getting involved in training, and boxing itself," he said."Natasha is a great role model for them."Head coach Wullie Martin said the club was very proud of how she had developed."Natasha made history for our wee club by becoming the first female Braveheart boxer to compete in a sanctioned bout up in Glasgow," he said."I told Natasha that win, lose or draw didn't really matter because as you step in through the ropes of a boxing ring the most important thing is not physical strength, but mental strength."You have to believe in yourself and your abilities to succeed, and Natasha has shown she has that mindset. The wins will come." If you have been affected by any of the issues raised in this story, you can visit the BBC Action Line.

Robin Goodfellow's racing tips: Best bets for Saturday, June 7
Mail Sport's racing expert Robin Goodfellow delivers his tips for Saturday's meetings at Musselburgh, Epsom Downs, Worcester, Doncaster, Hexham, Chepstow and Lingfield. RUBY'S PROFIT (NB) has the ideal draw (Epsom 2.10). From stall 18, she can use the blistering pace she has shown on her three starts this season — winning twice and finishing runner-up in the other — to get to the nearside rail and lead. DEMOCRACY DILEMMA (NAP) will relish the five-furlong downhill speed test (Epsom 2.45) and can go one better than last year, despite racing off 2lb higher. He drops back into handicap company for the first time in five runs. CHRIS BAKER'S WIZARD OF ODDS 1.00 Epsom: ROYAL DRESS went close in this race last year before going on to land a Group Three contest in Ireland. She made a pleasing return to action in a higher grade last month. 2.45 Epsom: CLARENDON HOUSE was second in this race two years ago, while nothing went to plan in last year's renewal. He has since won two Listed races and is in good form. 4.15 Epsom: FOURONEOHFEVER enjoyed a productive 2024, including a placed effort in a Royal Ascot handicap. He is coming back to form and should have his ideal ground.
