Ex-MasterChef Australia judge George Calombaris opens up about alcohol struggles and former business woes

7NEWS14-07-2025
Former MasterChef Australia judge and hospitality entrepreneur George Calombaris has spoken of his battle with alcohol addiction after a series of scandals rocked his empire.
Appearing on the podcast Ouzo Talk, Calombaris detailed his spiral after his MAdE Establishment group had payroll issues, underpaying staff more than $7 million over a six year period.
The celebrity chef and Melbourne personality paid back all the staff's wages and superannuation, including a fine of $200,000.
It wasn't the only controversy to snag the disgraced star, in 2017 he was charged with assault following an altercation with a fan at the A-League grand final.
The conviction was overturned on appeal and the judge imposed a 12-month good behaviour bond while striking the criminal conviction from his permanent record.
Calombaris told the podcast it had been a difficult time.
'It was six months of pain you know, I had to go in and out of court three times, hire one of the best KC's of the time,' he said.
It was also around this period that he and fellow MasterChef judges Matt Preston and Gary Mehigan left the Channel 10 show due to contract negotiation breakdowns.
Then, when the pandemic hit in 2020, Calombaris found himself at rock bottom.
'After COVID hit, I'm suddenly sitting in Melbourne, which is shut for now two years, sitting with my pyjamas on … looking at my phone going there's no emails, there's nothing to do (and I) start drinking daily,' he said.
The 46-year-old told of how around three months in, he got in his car and drove down the road, and was found by his brother 'pissed as a fart'.
'And that was a moment, he really slapped it out of me and went enough is enough.'
But, it appears that the setbacks have not dampened the entrepreneurial spirit in Calombaris as he moved his successful venture Gazi from Melbourne to Sydney, where it looks likely to stay.
'Sydney's truly an international city, I've travelled everywhere in the world with my job and Sydney's in the top five cities in the world,' he said.
'I feel that there's this buzz here and I'm a part of this buzz and we've got lots of good plans here.'

Mabel married Preye Crooks

Mabel has got married. The 29-year-old singer tied the knot with music executive Preye Crooks on Saturday (26.07.25) in an intimate ceremony before heading to London's Victoria and Albert Museum for a spectacular party in the evening. A source told The Sun newspaper's Bizarre column: 'It was quite an intimate affair initially — they had a nice dinner with their closest friends and family to kick things off. "Then more of their loved ones turned up to celebrate with them in style later in the evening. 'They all had a brilliant time and Mabel and Preye looked so in love.' Around 150 people, including presenter Miquita Oliver and her mother Andi Oliver, enjoyed champagne and margaritas until late into the night at the museum, which costs at least £10,000 to hire for wedding parties. Mabel - who is the daughter of singer Neneh Cherry and musician-and-producer Cameron McVey - got engaged to Preye last November and she recently admitted her mother "just cries all the time" out of excitement about her wedding. The Finders Keepers hitmaker initially thought Preye was "too normal" when they first met because she was always attracted to men who were not going to treat her well. Speaking on the Miss Me podcast, she said: "Subconsciously when I met Preye, I was just like, 'No, he's too normal. He's not going to get this. He's too nice'. "He would ask me how I am. And I'm like, 'What do you want? What's the catch here?' "Because honestly, all I wanted to do was sit around chasing some guy that probably didn't reply, probably had a secret baby, secret girlfriend. All true stories. Sad but it's true." While the couple held their reception at the V+A, Mabel previously said she had been looking at other iconic London buildings for her wedding day. Asked where they might tie the knot, she said: "It's like St Paul's Cathedral. I think there's a few things you can do. I'm like, what can we get out of this?" The Don't Call Me Up singer and the Strawberries and Creem Festival organiser began dating in 2021 after meeting through the music industry.

Danika Mason cops heartbreaking blow as rugby league boyfriend Liam Knight makes move

Channel 9 presenter Danika Mason has copped a brutal blow with her rugby league boyfriend, Liam Knight, set to spend the next year on the other side of the world. Knight, who signed a deal to join Super League club Hull FC back in March, has set the league alight since making the move from Australia. As a result of his excellent start to the 2025 season, the 30-year-old has been rewarded with a new 12-month contract. While it shows Knight is thriving in his career, it means he will continue to be more than 17,000km away from the Wide World of Sports host, who recently replaced Alex Cullen on Nine's Today Show. Knight, who hails from Alice Springs, was released by the Canterbury Bulldogs last year, after playing just two matches for the club in 2024. He was quickly snapped up by Hull ahead of the 2025 season. Knight was originally set to spend seven months in the UK playing for Hull. But after becoming a fan favourite and one of the club's most consistent players, he penned a new 12-month deal. 'I'm stoked to be staying here – I really love this club and I'm really excited to see what we can keep building over the next 12 months,' Knight told the club's website announcing the news of his re-signing. 'I've really fallen in love with the fans and the atmosphere, both home and away – they're so dedicated. I love the playing group we have here and the coaching staff too – it's a fun place to come to work and that's being reflected in our performances.' While his career is thriving, it is a tough blow to his budding relationship with Mason. The couple's relationship became the talk of the rugby league world last year after Mason split with fiancee Todd Liubinskas in 2023 and called off their wedding, just weeks before they were set to get married. The exact reason for the couple's split remains unclear and became a topic of much speculation among footy and media insiders, with the party line being that it was due to a breakdown in trust. Mason was first pictured on a date with Knight at The Butler restaurant in Sydney's Potts Point in February 2024 before the pair confirmed they were together on Instagram in July. Knight posted a loved-up snap of the pair embracing with the caption: 'My life's good.' Despite the distance that now separates them, the pair have remained together. And while it is undoubtedly hard to be away from his partner, Knight revealed his move to Hull has helped him rediscover his love for rugby league. 'It's been a real ride so far – I got off the plane in March and jumped straight into it,' Knight said. 'I didn't have much of a pre-season, so the first few weeks were about building some fitness, and I feel like I've been building week to week and contributing to the team. 'I had a couple of tough years back home in regards to injury, so coming over to England was a bit of a clean slate for me. I've really found my love for the sport again, so this move has been a massive blessing for me.'

And I wear these white Maria McManus jeans a lot - they're great ... "I usually [style the jeans with] a white T-shirt or a white button-down with the white jeans, and then a black or brown belt. "With the skirt, I've been wearing it with a bodysuit - there's a black one and a brown one we make with spaghetti straps that I've been wearing a lot." Gwyneth went on to share the best sunscreen products she's been using this summer, adding: "This summer I've been using Kosas regularly - it has a little tint, so it helps conceal flaws. "I also really like Supergoop for the body. And Dune, actually, which I think [daughter] Apple introduced me to - it has a really nice finish to it." When asked to name her best skincare essentials for the warmer months, Gwyneth insisted she sticks to Goop's own beauty range. She shared: "I really love our Fix and Restore Balm, the face oil, and our face cream. I always do oil first and then moisturizer afterward."
