Malaysia rolls out warm welcome for Guinea-Bissau president

PUTRAJAYA: President of Guinea-Bissau General Umaro Sissoco Embaló received an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex today. His arrival was greeted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at 9.00am. Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Fadillah Yusof, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. Also in attendance were several deputy ministers, senior government officials and diplomats. Guinea-Bissau is a country in West Africa, bordered by Senegal to the north and Guinea to the south and east. Its capital is Bissau. Embaló, who is on a four-day visit, then inspected a guard of honour mounted by three officers and 103 officers of different ranks, led by Major Mohamad Waqiyuddin Abdul Rahman, from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment. This official visit marks his first visit to Malaysia since assuming office as the President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau in February 2020. Anwar will host Embaló and his delegation which includes the Republic's Minister of Economic Planning and Regional Integration, Soares Sambú, as well as senior officials from the Cabinet at a luncheon today. Wisma Putra in a statement yesterday said the visit reflects the shared commitment of both Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau to further strengthen bilateral relations and explore new avenues of cooperation, building upon the warm and longstanding ties that have united the two nations. Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations in November 1974. Bilateral ties between the two countries remain cordial, based on a shared commitment to cooperation on both bilateral and multilateral platforms, including the United Nations (UN), the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Guinea-Bissau reached RM4.1 million, with Malaysian exports amounting to RM4.04 million and imports standing at RM0.06 million.

Dr Zaliha: JWP, agencies committed to implementing Kembara Diraja

KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa has directed the Department of Federal Territories (JWP) and all agencies under it to coordinate the implementation of the Kembara Diraja (Royal Tour), as decreed by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia. In a statement on her Facebook page, she said the tour would provide an opportunity for His Majesty to personally engage with the people across the three Federal Territories and distribute zakat aid to those in need. Yesterday, Sultan Ibrahim announced that he would embark on the Kembara Diraja across the Federal Territories to observe the people's living conditions firsthand and distribute zakat to the poor and the eight eligible asnaf groups. His Majesty made the remarks during the 2025 Investiture Ceremony held in conjunction with his official birthday at Istana Negara yesterday. Dr Zaliha said JWP also fully supports His Majesty's emphasis on the need for civil servants to uphold the principle of Loyalty to the King and Country, which aligns with the Harmoni work culture introduced in the Federal Territories as a foundation for good governance. "As a policy-implementing body, JWP personnel will remain committed to enhancing the delivery of public services that are efficient, with integrity and people-oriented, in line with the spirit of Malaysia Madani," she said. – BERNAMA

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : The government plans to build a 41ha 'Madani City' in Putrajaya, with the groundbreaking ceremony set for June 26. Federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the township will be a strategic long-term development for Putrajaya and will come with 10,000 residential units to house 30,000 people. She said its design would integrate artificial intelligence, high-efficiency digital infrastructure and a green mobility system. 'This is the foundation for a low-carbon city that upholds the principles of sustainability, welfare and public safety,' she said in a Facebook post. Zaliha presented the township's concept to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today, adding that it was in line with the government's vision of making the three federal territories clean, healthy, advanced, safe and eco-friendly, or 'CHASE cities'. Separately, Anwar said the 'Madani City' concept stresses on providing centralised and holistic basic facilities that would ensure the people's welfare. He said among the facilities being planned are a secondary school, a technical and vocational education and training institution, banks, a government clinic and a mosque. 'The first phase will involve the construction of around 3,000 residential units and a vertical school, and is expected to be completed and operational by the end of 2027,' said the prime minister.
