Miles Franklin 2025: your guide to the shortlist of Australia's biggest literary prize

All dull awards shortlist books that are alike; every important award recognises books that are remarkable in their own way. This is what makes them worth paying attention to, what makes following them fun – and this year's Miles Franklin award shortlist is no exception. All six books hail from different publishers. Each book is markedly different in genre, style and form.
The self is an uncertain site in all these books – one where concepts like nationhood, sexuality, class and ethnicity are negotiated. There is a portrait of coming-of-age and Tongan community, a bawdy historical novel told by a self-styled horse thief, and an interlinked short-story cycle that turns on the omens and aftershocks of a serial killing. And three very different novels of ideas playfully reference other texts (as well as themselves) – and draw attention to how they are made.
Notably, Fiona McFarlane's Highway 13 is the first work of linked stories to be shortlisted for the prize, which is awarded to 'the novel of the highest literary merit'. But the shortlist is not, curiously enough, diverse in length: none of the entries break 400 pages, though Burruberongal writer Julie Janson's Compassion comes close.
'I was never good at philosophy,' quips Abraham Quin, Chinese Postman's occasional narrator. After being humiliated by his philosophy tutor at university, he learns to see himself in the third person as well as the first, to move 'easily between the two'. This gives us the basic shape of Castro's narrative, which takes the form of a series of ruminations, in either Quin's voice or a close third-person perspective.
So: philosophy's out. Quin is also 'through with all that novel-writing'. Despite this protest, Castro's book is best described as a philosophical novel or a novel of ideas. Chinese Postman is largely plotless, though Quin's email correspondence with a Ukrainian woman named Iryna Zarębina gives it a flexible spine.
Quin has a penchant for maxims, particularly when their content is scatological. 'Shit', in his telling, is 'a symptom of lowly creation's failure to survive as gods'. It is, for him, a substance 'without hierarchy', in which 'All are equalised'.
Reflections of this kind are Quin's way of 'composting' – rather than composing – his thoughts. For those who read for the sheer delight of allusive, tricky, irreverent sentences, Chinese Postman will be the most exciting work on the shortlist.
Compassion is the shortlist's only realist historical novel. Set between the years 1836 and 1854, it is a story of maternal reconciliation and paternal reckoning told largely from the point of view of a Darug woman named Duringah, who escapes abuse and traverses Darkinjung and Awabakal country (as well as the country of many other clans and nations) in order to return home.
Compassion is a sequel: it continues the dramatised life story of Janson's ancestors from her 2020 novel, Benevolence, which centred on Duringah's (now-estranged) mother, Muraging. In turning to Duringah, who takes up the alias Eleanor James, Compassion flirts with conventions drawn from an array of literary and popular genres, including colonial romance, revisionist history, melodrama and the picaresque.
Duringah outwits and eludes colonial authorities with palpable glee. But Compassion has its heartfelt scenes, too. Duringah's arrival at a mission station, where Koori women sing a church hymn, serves as the occasion for a moment of reverence and some of Janson's best writing.
Their voices, 'pure like bells', summon memories of 'singing the country with a corroboree'. Yet this memory culminates in a plea for quiet, lest their songs become a 'beacon for vengeful white men'. This tension – between the desire to speak up, and the risks of doing so – lies at the heart of Janson's truth-telling project.
Winnie Dunn once remarked in an interview that she considers 'all forms of writing' to be 'autobiographical fiction'. This has clearly informed her work as an editor for the Sweatshop Literacy Movement, as well as her debut novel.
Semi-autobiographical writing, as Dirt Poor Islanders well knows, always takes place in productive tension with the right to privacy – of the writer's family and their broader community.
The novel's first chapter thinks this through when Dunn's Tongan-Australian avatar, Meadow Reed, locates her family members in the blotches, beauty spots and wrinkles on her grandmother's face. This intimate moment is promptly interrupted by their racist neighbour Shazza, who tells the pair to 'eff off to Fiji'.
This suggests Dunn's keen awareness of the risk of telling stories grounded in personal experience before an ignorant, even hostile, audience. Dirt Poor Islanders refuses to be cowed by this risk. Like two of her clear influences, Melissa Lucashenko and Michael Mohammed Ahmad, Dunn responds by doubling down. Meadow unapologetically narrates scenes of cockroach eating and chicken plucking, force feeding and constipation, menstruation and childbirth.
'From nits having sex on my head', thinks Meadow, 'to maggots wriggling in lumps of lard to cockroaches crawling in cereal boxes and cushion crevices, I asked, 'Y'.'
Dunn's answer? A sanitised self is barely half an identity – and 'No one could live as half of themselves'.
Ghost Cities is an ingeniously structured novel that takes tyranny as its central theme. At its heart are two dictators – an emperor and a director – both prone to issuing capricious edicts to terrorise their hapless subjects. Both come to preside over labyrinthine cities, implied to be millennia apart.
The emperor reigns over the Imperial City, the director over a ghost city named Port Man Tou, peopled by ill-paid actors. The cities are opposed, respectively, by Lu Shan Liang and Xiang Lu, whose names resemble their author's. The novel's wacky, erratic plot plays out across alternating chapters through two timelines, their narratives routinely contorted by the whims of their respective dictators.
At one point, Xiang Lu mentions he is partway through Vladimir Nabokov's early novel, Invitation to a Beheading. Nabokov's burlesque of tyrannical logic is one of many texts Ghost Cities is in dialogue with.
But Ghost Cities most strikingly resembles another Nabokov novel, Pale Fire. Both novels have a long poem at their centre (in loose iambic pentameter); both feature half-comic assassination attempts. They share an ear for the comedy of translation and an eye for the absurd.
Ghost Cities both embraces and defies its emperor's directive to abandon 'the pursuit of beauty' for art that favours 'furrowed brows and scholar-like interpretation'. In its zany intertextuality, it displays a level of intellectual ambition rarely found in recent fiction.
The 12 stories that make up Highway 13 are all loosely connected to a single man, Paul Biga, the perpetrator of a series of brutal highway murders, whose facts reference (but don't mirror) those of the convicted backpacker murderer Ivan Milat, arrested in 1994. Interestingly, Highway 13 is the only book shortlisted not to make extensive use of first-person narration.
The settings range from 1950 to 2028, and span Australia, the US and Europe. They extend a preoccupation with the uncanny that runs through McFarlane's body of work.
Stylistically, McFarlane errs on the side of minimalism. These are stories of considerable subtlety and restraint. Highway 13 endeavours to surprise – not at the level of the individual sentence, but in what its sentences imply. It invites us to notice: when the bodies of stink beetles are dumped in a garden corner where 'ants had made feasts of the softer flesh', we can't help but see in their decomposing corpses the shadow of a crime.
Highway 13 is more concerned with the murders' distant precursors (in the lives of others) and long-term ramifications (the way it resurfaces after the event) than in finding narrow causes. It tactfully avoids too-obvious parallels between the fictional Paul Biga and real Ivan Milat.
In these ways, McFarlane creates space for her marvellous collection to linger with the living, with those bound to each other in their respective presents by fragile forms of love.
Theory and Practice takes place primarily in St Kilda, Melbourne, in 1986. It is narrated by a female university student, unnamed for most of the novel, who is writing her thesis on Virginia Woolf.
'Theory', she observes with distaste, has 'conquered the humanities', especially the English department where she studies. When compelled to read theorists, rather than the novels she loves, she feels 'headachey and crushed'. Even the work of feminist and postcolonial theorists, which she draws on to help explain her life as a Sri Lankan woman from Sydney, leaves her ambivalent.
'Practice', on the other hand, describes her life as it is lived. In this novel, practice decidedly wins.
The narrator is vexed by casual lovers – she is having an affair with a fellow student in a 'deconstructed relationship' – and hypocritical professors. She's also outraged by a diary entry in which Woolf describes Ceylonese freedom fighter EW Perera as a 'poor little mahogany coloured wretch'.
Theory and Practice is at its best when it embraces its title's distinction, which it elsewhere compellingly glosses as the distinction between 'realism and reality', through a cast of characters adept at talking their way out of our attempts to interrogate them.
The Miles Franklin literary award will be announced on 24 July

Cal Gildart of Ladbrokes said: 'With a record number of world championships, Phil Taylor knows all about stealing the spotlight at the back end of the year. 'But Ally Pally is a long way from the jungle, so it remains to be seen whether that success translates if he pitches up in the camp this winter.' Phil has been making his interest in joining the show clear since at least 2017, with him noting how much he would love to take on the challenge. At the time, he said: 'I would do the jungle. Strictly I am not sure, though it would do me the world of good as it would get me fit. 'I have been asked to do the jungle but was always busy.' But I'm a Celebrity – known for its gruesome challenges that include munching on 'delicacies' such as kangaroo testicles and fish eyes – has so far not given him the call. The series typically films towards the end of each year, starting in October, which for Phil would have been the height of the darts season ahead of the World Championships. In 2023, Phil, who scooped a record 85 major titles in his career, shared again he was up for the task, believing there was 'no challenge he couldn't do'. ‘Financial companies shouldn't be in this position': How more than 20,000 NSFW video games fell under censorship

A critically lauded horror game about the consequences of rape was among more than 20,000 titles caught up in a sweeping purge of adult video games from online storefronts. The furor started in April when an Australian anti-porn group called Collective Shout asked the video game marketplaces Steam and to ban an incest-themed rape simulator game. The game No Mercy urged players to 'never take 'no' for an answer' and caused an international outcry, with just under 70,000 people signing an online petition to ban it. It was swiftly blocked from sale in Australia, the UK and Canada; banned by Itch; and removed from Steam by its creators. Yet the backlash to that one extreme game caused thousands of others with general themes of sex, gender and LGTBQ experiences to also be removed — but not by any governmental action. The censorship came from the marketplace itself, due to pressure from payment providers such as Mastercard, Visa, PayPal and Stripe — some of which allegedly threatened to stop processing transactions altogether if swift action wasn't taken. 'The situation developed rapidly, and we had to act urgently,' wrote Itch founder Leaf Corcoran on July 28. "Unfortunately, this meant it was not realistic to provide creators with advance notice before making this change." And as a result, many video game users and creators saw the campaign as unfairly targeting anything that is beyond the mainstream, with gaming often a creative outlet for people to explore complicated topics. 'For many LGBTQ+ developers, Itch is one of the very few places left on the internet for us to express our gender and sexuality,' game developer and scholar Robert Yang, whose erotic triptych Radiator 2 was apparently deindexed, told The Independent. According to veteran digital rights activist Rainey Reitman, there is a longstanding pattern of financial censorship by payment providers — who have every reason to yield to such campaigns and little impetus to resist. "These are companies that specialize in securing payments and preventing fraud,' Reitman, author of the upcoming book Transaction Denied: Big Finance's Power to Punish Speech, told The Independent. 'They don't have the expertise or the incentives to consider the societal and ethical ramifications of silencing certain voices and certain types of content.' 'It was critical that we acted as fast as possible' The spark for this crackdown came in May, when Collective Shout — a relatively small anti-porn group little known outside Australia — turned its attention to payment companies after allegedly being ignored by Steam. Though No Mercy had been pulled, the group said it found 'hundreds' of other such games, many of which were "too distressing to make public". On July 10 the group wrote an open letter asking payment companies to suspend all transactions on Steam and Itch until things changed. It was ambiguous about what exactly should be censored, referring sometimes to games that "endorsed" sexual violence and sometimes to games that "featured" or were "themed" after it. "There is of course a big difference between merely depicting something, or exploring a topic for the purpose of social commentary or critique, and promoting or endorsing it," Collective Shout's campaign manager Caitlin Roper told The Independent. "Our objection is to content that promotes sexualized violence, primarily against women... the intention was never to target NSFW content generally, or LGBT+ artists and creators." But, speaking to the gaming news site Aftermath, Itch founder Corcoran said Visa had issued a "policy notice" against the marketplace — which focuses on indie and arthouse games — that made middlemen such as PayPal and Stripe question doing business with it. Paypal and Stripe wouldn't comment on individual companies, but Stripe noted that it does not support adult content. Visa did not respond to a request for comment. Meanwhile, Steam's parent company, Valve, alleged that Mastercard had leaned on its (unnamed) payment middlemen to demand that Steam change its existing rules — although Mastercard gave a different account. Steam's purge was relatively small, according to the tracking service SteamDB. Most banned games were explicitly pornographic and incest-themed, with titles such as Interactive Sex: Mom Son Incest and Sex Adventures: Incest Family. But Itch is a more hands-off platform, with less ability to judge case by case, so its purge was far less discriminate. The industry newsletter Game File reported that more than 20,000 games were unable to be found. Among the casualties was Mouthwashing, a widely praised indie horror game about the aftermath of sexual abuse aboard a space freighter, and SABBAT, a 2013 text adventure in which the player can transform into a weird giant monster creature and destroy capitalism. By July 31, all free NSFW games had been re-indexed, but Itch said it was still in talks about reinstating paid games. 'If had been moderating its platform properly, then these games would never have been impacted," Roper said. Still, some gamers and creators are suspicious of Collective Shout's politics, given its reported conservative connections. 'The right wing already routinely bans us and chases us off all the other websites! So [this] really does feel personal and anti-LGBTQ,' game developer Yang said. 'Sexuality is complicated, but Collective Shout and their right-wing allies exploit that complexity in bad faith. Do not believe them.' Payment companies have every reason to censor — and scarce motive not to To those who follow these payment companies, the speed and scale of the situation was unusual but not unprecedented. "I have heard of other situations in which websites received a very short window to address the concerns of the payment company," said Reitman, In 2022, a nude yoga website called True Naked Yoga was suddenly given "mere days" by Stripe to find a new payment processor, after operating for years without any problems, says Reitman, who founded the Financial Censorship Project. Since 9/11, financial institutions have increasingly been held responsible for stopping illegal or objectionable activity. Though initially targeted at money laundering and terrorist financing, these efforts have gradually expanded, with payment processors claiming broad discretion to refuse any legal transaction that might damage their brand. "Financial companies don't get a lot of benefit out of any one account," Reitman says. "It's often cheaper to close an account that's garnering attention than to pay the staff time to resolve issues with it," Reitman said. This is exacerbated by the role of reputation management companies that scour headlines and online marketplaces to flag risky e content. But the great adult videogame purge of 2025 shows reputational damage goes both ways. Payment companies have been swamped by calls from angry gamers, reportedly leading to desperate tactics such as hanging up on callers immediately or putting them on hold for 17 hours. "Financial companies shouldn't be in the position of reviewing and censoring online speech,' Reitman says. 'They don't have the expertise to do it, there is no transparency or accountability around their decisions, and nobody elected them to be the arbiters of morality online."

An American mom who moved to Australia has revealed the biggest differences between kid's birthday parties in the two countries. In a recent video posted to TikTok, Lex, who has lived in Australia for almost a year, sparked a viral conversation after she detailed the top five variations when it comes to children's bashes - and how her family has adapted to them. 'They're just a little bit different from birthday parties in American,' the mom, who lives in Brisbane, Queensland, explained. Joking that her son is turning six soon so she's got 'birthday parties on the brain,' Lex went on to list the five keys differences. The first difference she noticed after going to a 'handful' of birthday parties down under is how 'laid back and chill' the parties were. Lex noted that in America, she feels as though birthday parties are trying to 'keep up with the Joneses.' 'You have these big, extravagant birthday parties [in the US],' she explained. As an example, she added: 'We went to a birthday party one time where they bought a petting zoo to the kid's house.' 'So what I enjoy here is that you know, most of the birthday parties we've been to have been at people's homes or at the park down the road,' added the mom-of-one. 'They ain't worried about having the perfect venue and spending all this money 'Also decorations are super chill, there's no decorations like balloon arches. There are decorations but it's just very simple.' The second difference was that there's less paper and plastic products used at birthday parties in Australia. 'In the States, we use paper plates and plastic forks and knives and plates all the time,' explained Lex. 'Therefore, it's much more common at birthday parties to see them in excess.' Meanwhile, in Australia, she said her son has been to a few birthday parties where they don't even offer plates for cake; instead, they give it to the kids in a napkin - sometimes without forks even. 'It was perfectly fine,' she quipped. 'Why are we using all these paper and plastic products?' The mom said the third difference was her 'favorite.' 'I love it when Australian's sing Happy Birthday,' she gushed. 'They say "hip, hip, hooray" at the end.' 'I love how much our son loves it now too,' she added. 'That's his favorite part of the son.' The fourth major difference according to Lex was the snacks offered at Australian birthday parties. She listed chocolate crackles, fairy bread (sprinkles on buttered white bread), and and the 'party mix' gummy candy. 'I just noticed in general that the snacks people offer here are different,' she observed. The fifth difference was that most of the cakes at Australian birthday parties are homemade. 'I think it's amazing and wholesome that the parents make the cakes,' she said, citing a popular cookbook, The Women's Weekly Birthday Cake Cookbook. 'I'm a big fan of all five differences,' she fondly reflected. 'I can't say there's one thing I miss.' The video went viral and users were divided in the comment section over whether these rules applied to all parts of Australia - with some suggesting it may be regional specific. 'Probably in Brisbane but you come to Sydney and it's a completely different story,' one user wrote. Another chimed in with her birthday memories, sharing: 'We had a pool and my birthday is October so my birthday parties were always a pool party with a BBQ, super fun and super easy. 'We'd play pass the parcel, the chocolate game, the doughnut game and lots of pool games. I loved it and my friends loved it.' 'It's all about everyone having a great relaxed day,' agreed someone else.
