Freely Streaming Service Signs Up Two More Major TV Brands

Forbes08-05-2025
Freely, the service that allows U.K. viewers to watch live broadcast channels over the Internet rather than through an aerial, has announced that it's expanding its availability to two major new TV brands.
Thanks to deals with Barcelona-based operating system Titan OS and TV manufacturer TP Vision, Freely will be available in the U.K. as a content option on select 2025 TVs from both Philips and JVC. The first Philips TVs to support it are set to launch before the end of this month (May 2025), and while a list of specific model numbers hasn't yet been released, it has been confirmed that the Philips Freely models will also carry the brand's exclusive Ambilight technology. This delivers a less tiring and more immersive viewing experience by using rear-mounted LEDs to cast immersive coloured light pools onto the wall around the screen – light pools that can even be set to track the tone and position of the colour content of the film or TV show you're watching.

Freely hasn't shared a list of the precise JVC models that will be covered by the new Freely deal either, but basically it should be any JVC set carrying the Titan OS that's launched from this summer at electronics retailer Currys.
According to Freely, the new Philips and JVC deals, which join previous deals with Amazon Fire TVs, Bush, Hisense, METZ, Panasonic, Sharp, TCL, TiVo, Toshiba and the VIDAA smart platform, mean that its service will be available on almost half of the UK TV market.
'We're excited to bring Freely to the JVC TV range, giving customers even more flexibility to enjoy the content they love,' says Senior Buyer for Currys, Paul Slater. 'By adding this free-to-use platform to our affordable JVC range, which is available exclusively at Currys, we're continuing our mission to help everyone enjoy amazing technology.'
Alongside the announcement of its two new TV brand partners, Freely has also revealed that its service, which is backed by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 and claims to carry 97% of the U.K.'s 'favourite TV Shows' on both a live and on-demand basis, will be rolling out a duo of new content-finding features over the coming weeks.
A new Backwards TV Guide is designed to make it easier for viewers to watch shows that have recently aired by allowing them to simply scroll back to earlier in the day on the Freely electronic programme guide. Once you've got to the programme you missed, you can either start streaming it right away, or else add it to the previously announced My List feature.
New deals mean that Freely will soon be available on select Philips and JVC TVs that use the Titan ... More OS smart platform.
My List makes it possible for the first time to save up to 50 favourite TV shows from any of the U.K.'s biggest free-to-air broadcasters all in one easy access place, rather than you having to re-search for favourite shows every time you want to watch them.
The second of the new features coming to Freely, Never Miss, highlights on the Freely home page the most talked about coming up, on now and just missed TV shows, as well as spotlighting the most popular and high profile shows available via Freely's huge on-demand content library.
Both of these new features are set to be rolled out in an upcoming Freely Next firmware update that will arrive automatically onto any Freely-capable TV that's connected to Wi-Fi.
'Our new features—Backwards TV Guide, Never Miss, and My List—make finding, saving, and jumping back into great content effortless, whether live or on demand,' says Co-Chief Product Officer at Freely, Sarah Milton. 'Freely keeps evolving, offering premium features for free that other streaming platforms don't have. And now with Freely becoming available on a wider range of new smart TVs, even more households will be able to enjoy this enhanced free streaming experience.'

Who is Noel Clarke?

Born in London, Noel Clarke was raised by his mother, a nurse. He studied media and took classes at London's Actors Centre before making his debut in the 1999 Channel 4 TV series Metrosexuality. In 2003, he won the Most Promising Performer award at the Olivier Awards for his performance in Where Do We Live at the Royal Court Theatre, and then significantly widened his fan base by playing Billie Piper's boyfriend, Mickey Smith, in Doctor Who. He also gained fame as Wyman Norris in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, before later writing and starring in the acclaimed film trilogy Kidulthood, Adulthood and Brotherhood, directing two of them. He co-founded his own production company, Unstoppable Entertainment, in 2007, which has produced films including Jessica Hynes's directorial debut, The Fight, and 10×10, directed by Suzi Ewing and starring Luke Evans and Kelly Reilly. He then won the Bafta rising star award in 2009, crediting the award for his long career. In 2015, Clarke's former friend Adam Deacon was given a restraining order following hundreds of abusive posts aimed at Clarke on Instagram and Twitter, after a row over the title of Deacon's hit 2011 film Anuvahood. In 2018, Unstoppable Entertainment joined forces with All3Media and launched Unstoppable Film and Television to expand their remit to include television, which led to the launch of Sky One drama Bulletproof, in which he starred prior to the allegations coming to light. Bafta then awarded him the outstanding British contribution to cinema prize in April 2021, but this and Clarke's membership of the academy were suspended after the allegations against him were published by the Guardian. Clarke dropped legal action against the academy in 2022, but launched a libel claim against Guardian News & Media (GNM) the same year. During the High Court trial earlier this year, Clarke appeared visibly emotional as he claimed the publisher had 'smashed my life'. He said: 'They have smashed my life for four years with this rubbish, this nonsense. Four years.' He continued: 'I did not do this, I would not do this. I have got children. This is not true.' He later said that while he was 'a flawed guy', he added: 'The reason I stand here four years later is I am not what they have branded me.'

These three PS Plus games will blow you away this weekend (August 22-24)

I know we're all still amped up over all the announcements from Gamescom this week, especially for things like Ghost of Yotei and Black Ops 7 coming to PS5 in less than two months, but that doesn't solve the problem of what to play this weekend. We still have to wait a bit for Metal Gear Solid Delta and Lost Soul Aside, but this month's new PS Plus games might be one of the best drops of the year. We've got one day one title drop, plus two hidden gems that will surprise you with just how deep and thoughtful they are. It wasn't intentional, but this weekend's theme has ended up being a trio of smaller games that pack a huge punch. Sword of the Sea Let's start with the day one addition, shall we? If the footage for Sword of the Sea reminds you of the sliding sections of Journey, that's intentional — this is from the same team that made Abzu, Journey, and The Pathless, all of which featured silky smooth movement mechanics. This is yet another atmospheric and introspective game that doesn't tell its story through dialogue but visuals and environmental detail. You will glide through the world on your sword, pulling off tricks, and exploring this world to bring life back to a desolate world. As you bring water back to each area, more of the map opens up to explore. There is some light combat here, too, but this game is all about the vibes and environmental message. Sword of the Sea is available now on PS5 and PC. Unicorn Overlord I'll be honest; this game's title didn't do it any favors. Unless you are familiar with Vanillaware, this is probably a game you let slip without a second thought, but now that it is on Plus, I am obligated to convince you to try it. Unicorn Overlord is a tactical RPG like nothing else you've ever played. You will build up various groups of units on a grid and direct them on a map to fight other groups and take over locations, but how those battles play out is where it gets interesting. Fights are all automated, and you can see the results before they even start, but what you're in charge of is programming how your units behave. Almost like writing a script, you give your units conditions for who to attack, when to use skills, who to heal, and more. It sounds a little boring and tedious, but you have to try it for yourself to see just how rewarding it is in action. Plus, the art is unbeatable. Recommended Videos Unicorn Overlord is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch Indika I bet you've never played a game where you control a nun with the Devil speaking to her before. This indie game is a wild ride that you will never predict, so I will hold back from saying as much as I can to preserve the experience for you. What I will say is that it is a wonderfully strange, unpredictable, and striking game about faith, perspective, doubt, and reality. I know, that's terribly vague, but this is a game that you need to go into with as little knowledge as possible. And don't give up after the slow opening, either. It isn't a very long game so just stick with it and trust that it knows what it's doing. Indika is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
