In a first, suspect apprehended by using facial recognition technology: J&K Police

The Hindu19-06-2025
In a first, the J&K Police on Thursday (June 19, 2025) said the facial recognition system set up by the security forces in Anantnag's Langanbal checkpoint flagged a suspected over-ground worker (OGW), who was 'apprehended immediately for questioning'.
'The Anantnag Police, using the newly installed Facial Recognition System at Langanbal Naka, apprehended a suspected OGW flagged by the system. The individual is in custody. An investigation is under way,' a police spokesman said.
It's for the first time the J&K Police held a suspect by using the high-end technology of facial recognition. The suspect was held near Pahalgam, which is one of the main yatra routes. The Amarnath yatra will start from July 3 from the twin routes of Pahalgam and Sonamarg in Kashmir.
'Safety of the Amarnath Yatra remains our top priority,' the police said.
The latest move comes days after the Lieutenant Governor administration declared the twin routes as 'No Flying Zones' between July 1 and August 10 this year.
According to the order, any kind of aviation platforms and devices including UAVs, drones, balloons, etc., is prohibited on both the Pahalgam axis (in south Kashmir) and Baltal axis (in central Kashmir).
This year, the annual yatra comes in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 civilians dead on April 22. The Baisaran meadow where the attack took place is adjacent to the yatra route in Pahalgam. Additional companies of the central reserve force have been deployed for the yatra this year.

J&K Police attaches property of ‘active' terrorist in Anantnag

Srinagar: Police in J&K's Anantnag district said on Tuesday that it has attached the immovable property of an active terrorist. A police statement said that Anantnag Police, in its continued crackdown on the terror ecosystem, has attached immovable property belonging to an active terrorist under relevant provisions of law. The land falling under Khasra No. 165min situated at Guree, Bijbehara, and owned by Adil Hussain Thoker, son of Wali Mohammed Thoke, resident of Guree, Bijbehara, an active terrorist, has been attached under Section 83 of CrPC. The action has been taken in connection with FIR No. 11/2023 registered under Sections 20, 38 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Sections 2/3 of the EIMCO Act. This attachment is part of lawful measures aimed at dismantling the support structure of terrorism in the district. Such actions will continue against individuals found aiding or involved in unlawful and anti-national activities. Joint forces, including the army, CAPFs and the J&K Police, have been carrying out coordinated target-specific operations against terrorists, their Over Ground Workers (OGWs) and sympathisers. These operations are aimed at dismantling the entire ecosystem of terror in J&K rather than focusing only on the elimination of gun-wielding terrorists. Police have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, security, and the rule of law in the district. Drug smugglers and drug peddlers are also on the radar of the joint forces, as it is believed that the funds generated by hawala rackets and drug smuggling are used to fund terrorism. While the army guards the over 740 km long line of control (LoC) in J&K, the CAPFs and the local police carry out operations against terrorism in the hinterland. J&K L-G has been personally reviewing the security operations, and in periodic reviews, he has been laying stress on the terror ecosystem and not just terrorist specific operations.

Elder sister arrested for minor sibling's murder in J&K's Ganderbal

Srinagar: Acting swiftly after employing all its resources, police in Jammu and Kashmir's (J&K) Ganderbal district solved a gruesome murder case in less than 48 hours by arresting an elder sister for the alleged murder of her minor sister. The murder of a 14-year-old girl shocked people when her dead body was recovered by police in Batsar-Sehpora area of Ganderbal district two days ago. The murder of the minor was widely condemned and Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, who is also the MLA representing the Ganderbal Assembly constituency, had termed the killing as heinous and expressed his anguish over it. He demanded stern punishment for those guilty of murdering the minor girl. Less than 48 hours after the body of the 14-year-old girl was recovered on the Batsar-Sephora road in Ganderbal, police arrested her sister for the teenager's death in Ganderbal district. Addressing a press conference, SSP Ganderbal, Khalil Poswal said that the 22-year-old sister of the deceased has been arrested in connection with the incident. He said soon after the incident, police registered a case and started investigations. During the probe, he said, the role of the deceased girl's sister came to the fore and it was found that she had killed the minor. The SSP further stated that an altercation between the two sisters escalated, resulting in the elder sister hitting the younger one with a rod, which unfortunately led to her death. Further investigation is still underway in the case. Significantly, earlier the priority of the J&K Police was focussing on its anti-terrorism operations. Due to this, terror related incidents completely shadowed routine crime investigations as incidents like theft, murder, cheating and other routine crimes became secondary to the anti-terror operations of the police. As a modicum of normalcy returned to J&K after it came under direct central rule following the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, local police prioritised its routine crime investigation activity. This has led to better law and order, with the common citizens feeling much safer than they felt in the past. In an otherwise peaceful situation, crimes like the murder of the minor girl in Ganderbal had resulted in anger and anguish among the general public. Through its prompt action in Ganderbal, police have lived up to the expectation of the common citizen in the Valley.
