Stephens County Courthouse to temporarily close today for waterline repairs
The Stephens County Courthouse will close, with limited access to courtrooms, during waterline line repairs today.
Chairman Todd Churchman said the City of Duncan will make waterline repairs April 8 and the courthouse will not have access to water for a minimum of four hours.
Because of the repairs, the county board approved to close the Stephens County Courthouse, Sheriff's Office and Election Board Tuesday with limited access to the courts.
Churchman said two of the courtrooms will remain open for necessary business. He said security will be in attendance for upstairs access.
'The rest of the courthouse will be closed,' he said.
Stephens County Maintenance Director Steve Kaiser said crews will work on the jail to remain operational.
In the next order of business during the Monday meeting, Construction Manager At-Risk Butch Lawson gave a brief update for American Rescue Plan Act projects. He said electricians will continue to work on the generator for the Stephens County Courthouse Annex. He said there's a scheduled power outage for 7 a.m. Friday to disconnect power and run it through the power transfer.
Lawson said they will wait for a larger regulator for the meter to hook up the gas.
The Stephens County Sheriff's Office and Election Board will close Friday, April 11 for work on the generator. For emergencies call 911, for other SCSO needs, call 580-255-3131.
For the fairgrounds, Lawson said concrete crews began onsite and crews started installation for the roof on the banquet hall section.
He said over the next few weeks crews will begin interior framing.
The board then opened up a request to serve as a hosting entity for the Fire Management Assistance Grant for the Wildhorse Fire that happened March 14 near Velma.
Commissioner Russell Morgan asked if all fire departments put in something.
Emergency Manager Gary Curtis said all departments received notification.
The board approved to authorize Curtis to submit the required documentation for eligible reimbursement.
Finally, the board went into executive session for around 30 minutes to discuss the emergency manager's position.
After reconvening into open session, the board took no action.
In other news, the board approved:
• The disposition of an unclaimed decedent.
• To acknowledge a letter of resignation from fair board member, Eric Martin, and to affirm the appointment of Justin Parks to represent District #3 with a term set to end January 2028. Parks will replace Martin's position on the fair board.
The Stephens County Commissioners will convene again at 9:30 a.m. Monday, April 14 at the Stephens County Courthouse.

Watch: Funeral services for Morrow County deputy fatally shot on Memorial Day
GALION, Ohio (WCMH) – A private ceremony at Marion Cemetery will conclude a week's worth of remembrance for a Morrow County deputy who was shot and killed in the line of duty. Deputy Daniel 'Weston' Sherrer will be laid to rest Wednesday in Marion. A public service to honor and celebrate Sherrer is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Northmor High School near Galion, with former sheriff and current pastor Steve Brenneman officiating. Morrow County comes together to remember fallen deputy After the service, the procession route will proceed south from Northmor High School to U.S. 42, where it will head westbound past the Morrow County Sheriff's Office where Sherrer worked and through the center of Mount Gilead, the county seat. From there, it will proceed west on State Route 95 to Marion. The Sheriff's Office said its parking lot will be open to anyone would would like to view the procession and pay respects. Of those in attendance who spoke during the service was Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, Morrow County Sheriff John Hinton, and Franklin County Deputy Sheriff Michael Brewer. On Memorial Day, Sherrer was shot and killed while responding to a domestic situation at a home on County Road 26 south of Marengo. Sherrer's body was taken to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office before a police escort brought him back to Mount Gilead last Wednesday during a 120-mile procession. Flags around Ohio have been flying at half staff under an order from Gov. Mike DeWine that will expire at sunset Wednesday. Sherrer became a Morrow County deputy in May 2021. The 2012 graduate of St. Charles Preparatory in Columbus was engaged to be married and is survived by his parents and other relatives. Brian Wilson, 53, has been charged in Sherrer's death. Armed robbery in Aurora Township leaves one injured, Kane County Sheriff's Office says
An armed robbery on Monday evening in Aurora Township left one person injured, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff's Office. On Monday at around 6:36 p.m., the Sheriff's Office responded to a report of an armed robbery with shots fired and an individual injured on the 800 block of Konen Avenue in Aurora Township, the news release said. According to a preliminary investigation, three people had approached a red Mitsubishi Outlander demanding its driver, a man from Aurora, give them his money and cell phone. The items were taken, and one of the individuals fired a weapon, injuring the Aurora man's right leg, according to the release. The man was taken to Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora with non-life-threatening injuries and later released, the news release said. The individuals involved ran north from the scene of the incident, according to the Sheriff's Office's news release. Police dogs and a drone were deployed to locate evidence and the people involved, officials said. Those who remained at the scene were detained for questioning, with one released with no charges and another being held for further investigation and questioning, the release stated. The Aurora Police Department and Aurora Fire Department assisted, and the county's Investigations Division and Evidence Division also responded to assist with the investigation, which remains ongoing. The Kane County Sheriff's Office is encouraging anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information about it to contact the county's Investigations Division at 630-444-1103.
