Tributes paid to 'pure gentleman' found dead in Tipperary home
The body of Ian Walsh, 49, was discovered at his home on Creggs Road in Carrick-on-Suir, Co Tipperary at around 3.30am on Monday (August 4). Gardaí are treating his death as suspicious and believe he may have died a few days prior.
While a post-mortem examination will determine the course of Gardaí's investigation into Mr Walsh's death, tributes have begun pouring in for him following his death, with him being remembered by his colleagues at Irish Rail and railway enthusiasts as someone who 'went far beyond the extra mile.' Tributes have been paid to Ian Walsh, who was found dead in his home in Co Tipperary. Pic: Facebook
Táilte Tours, who knew Mr Walsh as a signaller at the Cork railway station who was a 'huge supporter' of their operation, said 'Ian ran five railtours of his own over the course of the mid to late 2000s, and was very much a pioneer in 'outside the box' tours in Ireland, starting them from locations such as Waterford and Limerick, in an era when tours were generally based in Dublin or Belfast.
'He was more than happy to pass his experience and expertise on when we started operations a few years ago; for those of you who enjoyed the 'surprise' rare track moves on our Cork-based railtours, you can thank Ian, who went far beyond the extra mile to ensure our operations went off without a hitch.
'He had a wonderful knowledge of the Iarnród Éireann system and its people, and had also developed a passion for Bus Éireann operations, diligently recording the last runs on several rural routes in the south east as they disappeared, quickly becoming a friend to bus drivers in the Cork and Waterford areas.' Mr Walsh was found dead at his home in Carrick on Suir on Monday morning, with Gardaí believing that he may have died over the Bank Holiday weekend. Pic: Facebook
Following the passing of Mr Walsh, Iarnród Éireann also paid tribute to him, saying that they were shocked at the death of their 'well known and popular' colleague.
Another person wrote; 'A good friend from day one, there will never be another railwayman like Ian. Rip Squinty [Mr Walsh's nickname].'
'I got to know Ian from taking photos an uploading to facebook Morden Bus Eireann page,' another wrote. 'He was a pure Gentleman. You'll be missed.'
Gardaí have appealed for anyone who was in the area of Cregg Road, Carrick-on-Suir over the Bank Holiday weekend, from Friday (August 1) at 8pm and Bank Holiday Monday (August 4) at 3.30am to contact them. Gardaí in Tipperary are appealing for anyone with any information, and who may have been on the Cregg Road area between Friday at 8pm and Monday at 3.30am to contact them. Pic: ABD/Shutterstock

‘Far cry from life he used to live' – Jail wing details as vile rape plot ex-garda caged with another disgraced ex-cop

He has gone from locking up criminals to becoming one' SICKO CAGED 'Far cry from life he used to live' – Jail wing details as vile rape plot ex-garda caged with another disgraced ex-cop A PERVERT former garda who was caged for impersonating a female colleague and encouraging strangers to rape her is locked up alongside another disgraced ex-officer. Shane Flanagan, 39, of Co Clare, was jailed for seven years for pretending to be the woman on a fetish site and discussing graphic sexual violence, cannibalism and rape. Brute Moody is serving a three-and-half-year sentence for a campaign of coercive control against his ex-partner. Advertisement Flanagan was handed a seven-year term last Tuesday for encouraging men to go to his workmate's house and rape her and her daughters. He resigned from the force in March. A source said: 'Flanagan will settle in well to the Midlands Prison as he will be serving at least part of his sentence alongside Moody. 'They will be like two peas in a pod. Moody is due for release next year, so once he is released, Flanagan will be the only other former garda on the landing. 'Flanagan joins some of the country's most dangerous sex offenders in the jail. Advertisement 'It's a far cry from the life he used to live, that's for sure. He has gone from locking up criminals to becoming one. 'There are certain inmates that aren't liked in prison and former members of An Garda Siochana are one of them.' The court heard how Flanagan and his colleague were only friends, and never romantic or intimate, when he set up a profile on a Canadian website that allows users to interact with each other about their sexual fetishes. HORROR ACTIONS He then joined a subgroup on the website called 'CNC', — or consensual non-consent — where women give advance consent to men to come to their homes to rape them. Flanagan used real photos of his colleague to set up the profile as well as information relating to her. He also set up a fake Facebook account for the same evil purpose. Advertisement The disturbing communications were discovered in December 2020, when one of the men who had been discussing the logistics of going to the woman's house with the fake account, contacted her on her legitimate Facebook profile to make sure she was really consenting. The fake profile had also encouraged strangers to not just rape the woman but also her two teenage daughters. The woman then set up her own profile on the site to find out what extent the information about her was online. She told the court how shocked she was to discover her colleague and friend had set up the profile and how it was a 'calculated, predatory act of violence' that had left lifelong scars for her and her daughters. Flanagan maintained it was just harmless role play when he was caught after giving men the woman's eircode and address. Advertisement 'BREATHTAKING DISREGARD' Imposing sentence at the Central Criminal Court, Judge Eileen Creedon said Flanagan's offending showed a 'breathtaking disregard' for the safety of the injured parties and that he would have been 'more alive to these dangers' due to his background as a garda. A source said Flanagan could now get a job alongside Moody as a cleaner at the prison. The insider said: 'Moody currently works as a cleaner, which is a sought-after job. He cleans up while the others are out in the yard. As Flanagan is also a former guard, it might also suit him to try and get a cleaning job, as they tend to interact less with the general population.'

Investigation under way after body found in Cork house
Gardaí have started an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 58-year-old man whose body was found in a rented house in Cork on Tuesday afternoon. The man's body was found by Gardaí in a house at Lower Barrack View near the North Cathedral around 4pm after they were contacted by a man in the area. It is understood the man had gone down the cul-de-sac behind the cathedral and, looking in a window of the terraced house, saw what he believed was a body in a room. Gardaí subsequently gained access to the house before immediately cordoning off the scene and requesting the services of Garda scenes-of-crime examiners, who preserved the scene. READ MORE Gardaí also requested the services of the State Pathologist's Office. The man's body is due to removed to Cork University Hospital for a postmortem on Wednesday. Officers began door-to-door inquiries and have established that the man – who was renting the property – had not been seen by his neighbours for a number of days. Garda sources said there was no sign of forced entry to the property but they were keeping an open mind as to the cause of the man's death pending the postmortem. They say they are hopeful the postmortem will establish what happened to the deceased man and give an approximate time of death.

Moment Virgin Atlantic passenger hurls horrific abuse at hostess he threatened to ‘gang rape & set alight' in vile rant
THIS is the shocking moment a Virgin Atlantic passenger hurled abuse at a hostess he threatened to "gang rape and set alight" Disturbing footage shows Salman Iftikhar, 37, tell stewardess Angie Walsh she would be attacked in her hotel after landing. 7 Salman Iftikhar, 37, was filmed threatening a Virgin Atlantic stewardess Credit: Central News 7 The passenger said crew member Angie Walsh would be gang raped Credit: Central News 7 Angie (left) was supported by sister Claire Walsh (right) at Birmingham Crown Court Credit: Central News He spouted his vile rant after downing champagne on an eight-hour flight from London Heathrow to Lahore on February 7 2023. Iftikhar said Ms Walsh would be taken from her hotel room, gang raped and set on fire. Another passenger, who filmed the shocking scenes, can be heard saying "holy s--t". Iftikhar repeatedly accuses Ms Walsh of being a racist and says: "You called me a p-ki in front of everybody." The 37-year-old had been flying with his wife and three children, Isleworth Crown Court heard. Prosecuting, Abdul Kapadia, said: "During the defendant's first meal service, the defendant was seen helping himself to ice, leaning over the bar he was drinking at, and taking ice with his hands. "When told to stop, the defendant became irate, and started to film cabin crew with his phone, telling them: 'Do not tell me what to do you b***h. "When asked by the cabin crew to return to his seat, he then said: 'Don't tell me what to do you racist f***ing b***h. I know where you are from in Cardiff." Staff alerted the pilot and the seat belt signs were turned on, which only aggravated Iftikhar more. He continued to call Ms Walsh a "f***ing b***h" before his escalating behaviour sparked a possible flight diversion to Turkey. Moment Scots Ryanair passenger hauled off flight by cops for 'VAPING' on plane "The defendant was informed of this possible diversion, to which he replied: 'I don't care. F--it, go to Turkey. I have contacts," the prosecutor told the court. "The defendant then sat down, but his aggressive behaviour continued. "His wife was ashamed. His three children were also on-board, and other crew members were called to assist, but the defendant continued shouting and swearing. "He was slurring his words, with his voice raised. 7 The father-of-three was with his wife and kids when he unleashed his vile rants Credit: Central News 7 Iftikhar admitted making threats to kill and racially aggravated harassment Credit: Central News 7 He told flight attendants he would blow up their floor of the crew hotel Credit: Central News "He shouted at the cabin crew: 'Do you know who I am?' "The defendant's wife went to the food bar and tried to talk to cabin crew, but the defendant pushed his wife away, and shouted at her not to talk to crew." He grabbed one flight attendant, called Tommy Merchant, and threatened him with a fight. 'YOU WILL BE DEAD' The out-of-control passenger then told cabin crew he would blow up the floor of their hotel. "The defendant knew the specific hotel, but also the hotel room numbers, and threatened the cabin crew with this," Mr Kapadia told the court. "He told Ms Walsh: 'You will be dead on the floor of your hotel'. "Iftikhar shouted at Ms Walsh and said: 'The white sheep sh**ging b***h will be dead. The floor of your hotel will be blown up and it will disappear. "He told Ms Walsh: 'You will be dragged by your hair from your room and gang raped and set on fire'." His violent rant unfolded in front of his wife and three young children - who were brought to tears. Iftikhar was arrested at his £900,000 detached home in Iver, Bucks, on March 16, 2024. 'IT HAS BROKEN ME' In an impact statement, Ms Walsh said she was forced to take off 14 months and the altercation "changed my life enormously". "I can't quite believe that one passenger has had this much of an impact on my, my job, my career and my life," she said. "I am a strong brave, happy stewardess, and loved my job. I am well known within the company. "But I had to take 14 months off work. "I have been flying with Virgin Atlantic for 37 years. I was working when all flights were grounded on 9/11, and I've even flown into a warzone. But this incident has broken me. "But I don't feel strong enough anymore. I was abused for eight hours and 15 mins. It has broken me. It was a very personal attack. "I was doing everything in my power to protect passengers and the crew from him. I felt exposed and vulnerable, especially as we were 39,000 feet in the air. There was nowhere for me to go. "There was one moment where I felt I could not cope. I went into the cockpit and had a meltdown. I said to the captain I don't know what to do. "Even the threat of diverting the plane to Turkey or Baku, Azerbaijan, had no effect. "I was traumatised by the threat of being gang raped. "Never in my entire career flying for 37 years have I not been sure what to do. "I have had the best career in the world for 37 years. But he has taken that away from me." He told Ms Walsh: 'You will be dead on the floor of your hotel' Prosecutor Abdul Kapadia Iftikhar, of Iver, Bucks, admitted making threats to kill and racially aggravated harassment, in relation to Ms Walsh. He was cleared of assault by beating and threats to kill in relation to Mr Merchant. Ben Walker-Nolan, defending, said Iftikhar was suffering from "amnesia blood loss" at the time. Mr Walker-Nolan added: "Although there were over 100 incidents over the course of eight hours, the most serious, including threats to kill, were limited. "The defendant has buried his head in the sand for a long period, and expressed regret. "He has a long standing drug and alcohol problem which he has not addressed for many years. "He is a successful businessman who employs a lot of people." THUG JAILED Iftikhar has six previous convictions arising from 15 offences, including common assault in 2004 and drink driving in 2008 and failing to stop and possession of cannabis in 2021. Judge Ms Recorder Annabel Darlow KC said: "Your threats to kill were made in the presence of children, specifically your three young children. "These were threats made with significant violence. "Your children had to be comforted by cabin crew staff while you made those threats. "Ms Walsh has given up a job which she has loved for 14 months, but thankfully has now returned to work. "This was a sustained incident which involved repeated racist abuse to Ms Walsh. "You have a lengthy and appalling record of misconduct. You have not addressed the underlying cause of this for many years, that is your drug and alcohol problem. "Given your lifestyle and your ability to earn money, your harm and risk has not moved. "This was an appalling incident which has caused long lasting and devastating consequences." Iftikhar cried in the dock as he was jailed for 15 months. His LinkedIn profile stated that he was the director and founder of recruitment firm Staffing Match. Virgin Atlantic was contacted for comment.
