Kurdistan prepares for Eid Al-Fitr tourism season

Shafaq News26-03-2025
Shafaq News/ Authorities in the Kurdistan Region completed preparations to welcome tourists for Eid Al-Fitr, with expectations of large numbers arriving, particularly from central and southern Iraq.
The Spokesperson for the Al-Sulaymaniyah Tourism Directorate Koran Qader told Shafaq News that it is difficult to provide an accurate estimate of the number of expected visitors, pointing out that several factors could affect tourist numbers, including the economic situation of citizens, the coincidence of the holiday with the end of the school year, and the situation in neighboring countries. 'However, we still expect a large influx of tourists to Al-Sulaymaniyah."
Mahmoud Tawfiq, head of the Al-Sulaymaniyah Restaurant and Hotel Association, explained that it had been agreed that all restaurants authorized to operate during Ramadan would remain open during the Eid holiday, with more than 120 restaurants in total, alongside the full operation of hotels to accommodate guests. He also mentioned that there would be strict monitoring of prices and service quality.
"Any facility not adhering to the specified standards will face penalties," Ibrahim Abdulhamid, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Region's Tourism Authority, stated to Shafaq News, revealing coordination between the Tourism Authority and travel companies, with over 200 tour operators organizing trips to the Region.
Regarding tourism traffic, Abdulhamid noted that "a large number of foreign tourists visited the region during the Nowruz celebrations and participated in events and festivals held for the occasion."
More than 25,000 tourists from Iraq entered Al-Sulaymaniyah through the Tasluja border crossing in last year's Fitr holiday, according to a statement by the Directorate of Tourism.

Baghdad to host Arab Architecture Festival in October

Shafaq News – Baghdad Baghdad, designated as the Arab Capital of Tourism, will host this October the Arab Architecture Festival, an event described as the largest of its kind in Iraq's modern history. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, who will sponsor the event, said in a statement that the festival represents a platform to address urban challenges in developing cities and to present Iraq's cultural and economic revival through architecture. The festival is organized in partnership with the Tamayouz Excellence Award Foundation for Global Architectural Excellence, founded in the UK in 2012. The award has grown into a leading international initiative celebrating outstanding Arab architects, once chaired by the late Zaha Hadid. Preparations for the Baghdad gathering were discussed on Tuesday between al-Sudani and architect Ahmed al-Malak, head of the foundation, alongside Iraqi architect Manhal al-Habboubi and Jordanian architect Osaid Al-Aytan. The talks focused on finalizing arrangements to ensure the event's success and to present Baghdad as a hub of cultural and urban innovation.

Egypt launches new trade corridor linking Saudi Arabia and Iraq

Shafaq News – Cairo Egypt inaugurated a new trade corridor with Saudi Arabia and Iraq, which aims to establish a regional trade route connecting the three countries, according to a report published Tuesday by Al-Masry Al-Youm. The report said that Safaga Port on the Red Sea recently handled the first trial shipment within the project. The initiative is part of a modern multimodal transport system combining maritime shipping and land transport, designed to reshape trade flows between the Arab Mashreq (Arab Levant) and North Africa. Instead of relying on traditional, time-consuming, and costly routes, the new path starts in Cairo, passes through Egypt's national highway network to Safaga Port, continues across the Red Sea to Saudi Arabia's Neom Port, and then moves overland to Erbil in Iraq's Kurdistan Region. Maritime sources at Safaga Port told the Egyptian Al-Masry Al-Youm Newspaper that the pilot shipment demonstrated a reduction of more than 50 percent in transport time compared with conventional routes. They added that this gives the new corridor a strong competitive advantage, particularly at a time when some traditional international trade passages face geopolitical challenges.

40+ people missing after boat capsizes in Nigeria

Shafaq News – Abuja More than 40 people went missing after a boat carrying over 50 passengers capsized in Nigeria's Sokoto state, the country's Emergency Agency reported on Sunday. In a statement, Nigerian authorities confirmed that around 10 passengers were rescued, while search and recovery operations continue. Boat accidents are frequent in Nigeria, often caused by overcrowding and poorly maintained waterways, particularly during the rainy season when rivers and lakes swell. These incidents have claimed dozens of lives across the country. Earlier this week, at least 13 people died in a boat accident in central Niger state, while the previous month saw six girls drown in Jigawa state when a boat transporting them home from farm work overturned. Additionally, in August 2024, a wooden boat carrying farmers to rice fields in Sokoto capsized, killing at least 16.
