Cheers star's cause of death exposed after sad sudden death
George Wendt died in his home at the age of 76 on May 20, and police have now released medical details Cheers legend George Wendt's cause of death has been revealed two weeks after the actor died suddenly in his sleep at the age of 76. According to a Los Angeles County Department of Public Health death certificate, Wendt died of a cardiac arrest on May 20. TMZ obtained the certificate, which also lists the underlying health conditions he had including congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, and hypertension. End-stage renal disease, kidney failure, and hyperlipidemia (a condition involving high levels of fat in the blood) also could have contributed to his death. The certificate states that Wendt was pronounced dead at 10am on May 20, and he was cremated on May 28. Wendt was a fixture on American television for over a decade. He is best known for his role as Norm Peterson on NBC's Cheers, where he earned six consecutive Emmy nominations for his portrayal of the cheerful barfly. The actor appeared in every episode of the long-running sitcom from 1982 to its finale in 1993 with his signature opening, "Afternoon everyone!" In a 2021 interview with Chicago Magazine, Wendt said: "Norm is just me with better writing. There were hundreds, if not thousands, of actors who could have delivered on the absolute gems that I was handed on a silver platter every Wednesday morning." Wendt's passing came just six months after he was seen looking frail while being wheeled out of a dialysis clinic in California on the exact anniversary of the Cheers finale. After the news of his death broke, he was flooded with tributes by fans and former co-stars. Ted Danson, who played bartender Sam Malone on the series, told People magazine: "I'm devastated to hear that Georgie is no longer with us. I am sending all my love to Bernadette and the children. It is going to take me a long time to get used to this. I love you, Georgie." Wendt's family also released a public message, which read: "George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time." Cheers became a cultural phenomenon over its 11 season run, and won 28 Emmy Awards after 117 nominations. Although the first season's ratings were poor, the show went on to become a hit and is now one of the most acclaimed sitcoms in TV history. Wendt also had a diverse acting career beyond Cheers, with roles in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Columbo, Wings, and Saturday Night Live's Bill Swerski's Superfans sketches. He found his way into acting after being expelled from the University of Notre Dame because of his poor grades and getting a job sweeping theatre floors. The sitcom star married Bernadette Birkett, who voiced Norm's off-screen wife Vera on Cheers , in 1978 and the pair went on to have three children together. For the most part Wendt stayed out of the spotlight in his later years, but made a touching final appearance at the Emmy Awards with his Cheers castmates in January 2024.

Scrubs-style medical comedy from top US writers airs on BBC1 tonight
If you're looking for your next laugh, BBC1 is showing St Denis Medical, a workplace comedy with a big heart From the Superstore team, St Denis Medical (on tonight, June 6, on BBC1 at 10.40pm) is a funny and charming workplace comedy that could easily run for many seasons. The mockumentary-style sitcom is created by Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin - Justin is a top showrunner, best known for his work on Superstore, with other credits including Scrubs and the American version of The Office. The US show introduces us to St. Denis Medical, a safety-net hospital in Oregon, although hospital boss Joyce (The Goldbergs' Wendi McLendon-Covey) is trying to promote it as 'an international medical destination'. It begins as supervising nurse Alex, played by the brilliant Allison Tolman (you'll recognise her from Fargo and Good Girls), helps a drug addict in the ER. Alex is a workaholic who thinks the emergency ward would collapse without her - although she's probably right. On reception, her overworked colleague Val (Kaliko Kauahi, you'll know her as Superstore's Sandra), tries to handle a restless queue of patients. New staff nurse Matt (Mekki Leeper) is late on his first day - coming from a remote community that doesn't believe in medicine, he'll be starting with the basics. He thinks he's one of the Avengers, but he's completely useless. Making up this eclectic team are jaded Dr Ron (David Alan Grier), nurse Serena (Kahyun Kim) and surgeon Bruce (Josh Lawson), who keeps a samurai sword and a guitar in his office next to all his certificates and thinks he's a detective doctor like 'House'. He's not. This is not a glossy, glamorous medical drama - it's more Scrubs than Grey's, as the under-funded but dedicated staff try not to lose their patience or their patients. Expect lots of laughs and slapstick humour, but also, just when you least expect it, a lot of heart. They begin in Mel's hometown of Leeds, where she has built a new life following her high-profile divorce from second husband, Stephen Belafonte. A far cry from her popstar days, Mel's daily routine now involves helping feed the chickens and goats on her working farm. Of course, Alison (a Spice Girls fan obviously) also finds out about life in the band and discovers that Mel and Geri still have a tumultuous relationship, speaking one day and not the next. The visit takes a heartfelt turn when Alison meets Mel's mother, Andrea. They reflect on the challenges of Mel's past, including her time in America and her troubled marriage, which strained their mother-daughter bond for years. CORONATION STREET, ITV1, 8pm Having allowed Millie to stay the night, Eileen warns Todd he may become responsible for her and must address the problem. Theo tells Millie her Mum wants her home, but Millie will only return if Theo moves back in. Dee-Dee assures Ed that she's put the past behind her and her focus is on ensuring better training for midwives. Cheers star George Wendt died at the age of 75 last month and the cause of his death has now been revealed. The actor, best known for his role as Norm Peterson in the 1980s sitcom, died at his home early on the morning of May 20. Wendt, who was beloved by millions of fans, reportedly died of a cardiac arrest.
