The neighbour who made the harrowing discovery, Ben Scott-Sandvik, told the Herald Sun: "I mean, no one should have to come across what I saw down there."
He added: "And nobody needs to live knowing that this sort of thing has happened to their families.'
Ross Judd, a 34-year-old homeless man, was arrested at Westall train station in Melbourne, Australia and charged with two counts of murder.
Cops dramatically swarmed the property the couple were in on Monday night after a neighbour heard screams and alerted police.
Several homes were still cordoned off on Adrienne Crescent in Mount Waverley on Wednesday as neighbours described their 'shock' at what had happened.
One neighbour called Dimmi who knew Athena's mum well but didn't know the victim was living just a few doors down said she was devastated by the tragic news.
She said: 'I didn't even know she lives there. I'm Greek too, so I was so close to her mother, but didn't see her for about 10 months.
'I've been here for 25 years, I walk along this street all the time but never saw her.
She added: 'I'm going to ring her mum, I'm in shock now. I don't know much about the girl who passed away, but I knew her when she was young. They used to come to my house all the time.
'She was a lovely girl. A very nice girl. I'm so, so sad.'

Another neighbour named Mary said she had also never seen Athena - despite living several doors up the road.
She revealed: 'Everybody is shocked here. It's amazing that it's just happened so close.
"I've spoken to others in the street and they said they didn't hear anything.'
Neighbours also received letters from local cops informing them of the harrowing ordeal.
Suspected killer Judd appeared at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
Grim footage of his arrest reportedly showed the suspect dressed in a blood-stained white T-shirt while being gripped by an officer.
The man appears on his knees before he is pulled to his feet on the station platform as another officer points at the ground.
Police allege the accused murderer was known to the couple, and that one of the victims lived in the unit.
He was heard in court reportedly saying: "I beg your pardon, yeah I'm all good."
An alleged motive for remains unclear - but it has been speculated the case may be drug-related.

Chilling graffiti sprayed across the couple's home read: 'Karma is not a menu.'
Vegan slogans like 'meat is murder' were also plastered across the property wall, alongside haunting words like 'betrayal", "unpredictable" and "inevitable'.
The messy graffiti, which was sprayed in luminous yellow, green and black paint also included derogatory and aggressive phrases like "U R Gay" and "Enough is Enough".
A police spokesperson said: 'Police are aware of graffiti on the property in Mount Waverley where the bodies of two people were located last night.
'Homicide Squad detectives will work to determine if the graffiti is relevant to the murder investigation.'
Local inspector Dean Thomas said the arrested man was known to the pair.
He said on Tuesday morning: "We believe that there is a link between our suspect and the address."
The officer added: "Police were called at about 9.20pm in relation to a welfare check at the address based on some yelling that was heard from the property.
'A second call was then made that suggested it was perhaps more urgent than what the first call was and police arrived minutes later, and obviously they found the male and female inside the premises deceased.
'We believe he [the suspect] may be of no fixed place of abode.
'It appears to be targeted and our suspect is known to the address.'
Athena was five months pregnant when she died and was in a relationship with Andrew before they were allegedly murdered.
Athena's aunt Patty Dilveridis told the Herald Sun her niece never thought she would be a mum.
'She was so looking forward to having a baby, because she was 39 [and] she never thought she could have one,' she said.
Meanwhile, her mum Petty, who was being looked after by Athena, was left "devastated".

Helicopter pilot injured in Outback Wrangler crash makes drug admission as text messages on his phone are read out to court: 'Want bags'

A pilot who was seriously injured in a deadly helicopter crash has admitted using cocaine, but has denied ever flying helicopters for reality TV star Matt Wright while high. Sebastian Robinson was left a paraplegic after the February 2022 crash that killed Outback Wrangler co-star Chris 'Willow' Wilson in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. Mr Robinson is giving evidence in the Supreme Court in Darwin at the trial of Wright, who has pleaded not guilty to three counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice. Prosecutors allege the TV star was worried crash investigators would discover flight-time meters were disconnected regularly to extend flying hours beyond official thresholds and paperwork was falsified. Mr Wilson fell to the ground from a sling beneath the chopper while collecting crocodile eggs in remote swampland. The aircraft then crashed, seriously injuring Mr Robinson, who is giving evidence by video link from his wheelchair. He previously told the court Wright asked him to manipulate the hours on his aircraft while the pilot was lying seriously injured in hospital. The 32-year-old also admitted that he used cocaine about twice a year. But senior defence counsel David Edwardson KC on Thursday read out text messages extracted from Mr Robinson's mobile phone by police, detailing regular exchanges with friends about the supply of the drug. Mr Edwardson previously alleged Mr Robinson was a cocaine-using 'party animal' in the lead-up to the crash. The text messages from November 2018 to August 2021 included lines from friends asking him if he was 'getting more coke' or could he 'get good stuff for Chrissy party' and did he have 'some Charlie'. One message read 'footy players in town and want bags', with Mr Edwardson asking Mr Robinson if that referred to Richmond and whether he planned to supply them with cocaine. Mr Robinson said he could not recall that message, adding he had never flown helicopters while high. In response to Mr Edwardson's line of questioning, he also said: 'Are you implying that I'm a drug dealer? No'. In another message exchange, Mr Robinson said he was 'crook as a dog' with a friend texting back, 'snorting too much coke out of Matty's arse'. Wright chuckled in the dock when the message was read out. Jurors were on Thursday also played a phone video of Mr Robinson appearing to pour Bundaberg rum into a cup for an Aboriginal ranger in alcohol-restricted Arnhem Land, saying: 'I'll sort you out.' Another video showed him with a ranger holding what appeared to be a joint, with Mr Robinson saying 'that's some strong shit'. A photo also showed Mr Robinson with a wooden pipe, which he told the court wasn't for marijuana. 'Hand on my heart that was a tobacco pipe,' he said, declining to admit he smoked cannabis. Mr Robinson admitted he smoked a hemp vape for nerve pain while he was recovering in hospital after the crash. The jury earlier heard that Wright visited Mr Robinson while he was heavily sedated in hospital 10 days after the crash and asked him to manipulate flying hour records. Mr Robinson said he declined to do so. The charges against Wright do not relate to the cause of the accident and the prosecution does not allege he is responsible for either the crash, Mr Wilson's death or Mr Robinson's injuries. The trial continues.

Cold case breakthrough as police charge man with the murder of woman more than 30 years after her brutal death

Homicide Squad detectives have charged a man over the death of Samantha Mizzi in St Kilda more than 30 years ago. Colin McKane, 67, was arrested in Ararat, in Victoria's west, on Thursday. He has been charged with murder and two counts of rape and will appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court this evening. The charges follow the alleged deadly attack on Ms Mizzi, 24, from Castlemaine, in country Victoria, on March 29, 1994. Her body was found by a passer-by in bushes at the rear of a property on St Kilda's Brighton Road about 11pm. She was taken to hospital but died the following morning. In announcing the breakthrough arrest, Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said criminals should take note that Victoria Police never lets a case rest. 'Today's arrest and charges highlight that it doesn't matter how many years have passed, detectives remain committed to holding those who are involved in violent crimes to account,' he said. 'It also shows that progress can be made on cases, even after decades have passed, and that we can begin the process of providing families with long-needed answers. 'If there are people out there who have information about a crime such as this, no matter how many years have passed, I can assure you that it's never too late to come forward.' At the time, it was believed Ms Mizzi was allegedly fatally beaten with an object and sexually assaulted before being stripped and left to die. She had travelled to the red light district from Castlemaine to earn money to support her children, who were at home being cared for by a friend. Witnesses said Ms Mizzi was seen speaking with a Caucasian man in his 40s prior to the attack whose identity remains a mystery.
