Dismissed, excluded and now adored: why are women surrealists suddenly everywhere?

'Of course the women were important,' said the artist Roland Penrose in 1982, 'but it was because they were our muses.' Penrose was talking to the art historian Whitney Chadwick, who was interviewing him for a book she was writing about women surrealists. 'They weren't artists,' insisted Penrose, who thought she shouldn't even be writing about them. But Chadwick did anyway – and the result, her 1985 book Women Artists and the Surrealist Movement, fundamentally changed our understanding of both surrealism and female artists.
In the 40 years since, many of the women Chadwick wrote about have gained wider fame, but the past few years have seen an explosion of interest in surrealist women. Last year was the 100th anniversary of the Surrealist Manifesto, which was actually two competing manifestos published by competing groups of (male) surrealists in Paris. So it's unsurprising that we saw so much interest in the movement. But it is striking that the centennial prompted a flurry of interest in the women – who were actually excluded from those groups. Indeed, many weren't even in Paris. Why the sudden broadening of the lens?
When Chadwick asked the surrealist Leonor Fini about Penrose's muses claim, she responded with characteristic directness, calling it 'bullshit'. Fini was born in Argentina and spent time in Italy before ending up in Paris. She was openly bisexual and spent the later part of her life living in a polyamorous relationship with two men – and dozens of cats. 'I am a painter,' she once said, 'not a woman painter.'
Her words reflect the complex politics of pursuing art as a woman. While their lives were defined by their experiences of being born women, and many of them made art that was explicitly about femininity and sexuality, they also bucked assumptions based on their gender that were made by their male peers and by the viewing public.
Claude Cahun, as early as 1914, went even further than Fini in her radical identification as lesbian and non-binary. She is famously quoted as saying: 'Masculine? Feminine? It depends on the situation. Neuter is the only gender that always suits me.' Currently the subject of a touring exhibition courtesy of London's Hayward Gallery, Cahun's photography was made with her partner, Marcel Moore, a lesbian who also lived androgynously.
Even among surrealist women who did not identify as queer, there is often an element of queerness to their work – either through an exploration of the 'divine feminine', or through a more fundamental sense of enigma. The late US scholar Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick described 'queer' as an 'open mesh of possibilities' between genders and sexualities, a defining way of using the word that has made it such a sweeping term today, sometimes meaning no more than 'impossible to categorise'.
Fini and Cahun were based in the surrealist centre of Paris, but many of the other women receiving new attention were not. Ithell Colquhoun was a British surrealist and is currently the subject of a major retrospective at Tate St Ives. It is a seismic exhibition that forcefully makes the case for Colquhoun's powerful legacy. Colquhoun was connected to so many occultist and spiritual groups in Britain that it's hard to count them all. From druidism to Tantra to Christianity, she spent her life seeking a higher truth, all reflected in her work.
Like Fini, Colquhoun was attracted to people of all genders, and her art was often explicitly sexual. She made one painting that depicted castrated male bodies, and it was immediately censored for its shocking content. Other works show abstracted, vulva-like landscapes, explore goddess imagery, and deploy techniques that introduce an element of chance – to allow the unconscious to take over the creative act.
There has long been a connection between women and magic – think of witches, goddesses, healers and storytellers. And for almost as long, this connection has been weighted with a sense of threat. The mystical, intangible power women could wield threatened patriarchal systems and needed to be controlled. In western art, it was written off as foolish or irrelevant. Colquhoun was pushed out of the British surrealist group because of her fascination with occult sects, which came to dominate her work.
Surrealism, although it is distinctly strange, was not concerned with the supernatural. The movements in Paris and Britain both rejected it. Their interest in the unconscious mind was largely scientific, even if it was also irrational (or perhaps anti-rational). Today, though, there is much more interest in these themes: Colquhoun's biographer Amy Hale has called it the 'Shamanic turn', as our collective consciousness becomes more open to esoteric beliefs. Last autumn, the London gallery Lévy Gorvy Dayan hosted Enchanted Alchemies, a show that focused on mystic and occult surrealists. Almost all women, they included Eileen Agar, Leonora Carrington, Fini and Colquhoun.
Mary Wykeham, a British surrealist whose work features in the Hepworth Wakefield's current exhibition Forbidden Territories: 100 Years of Surreal Landscapes, found spiritual fulfilment in a slightly different way: after a tumultuous lifetime spent as a wartime nurse, political activist and professional artist, she became a nun. Many of her surviving works are on paper, making them more fragile and smaller-scale. They are filled with swirling or geometric lines, almost completely abstract. Like all surrealist work, they strive to unlock the unconscious mind, bypassing rationality in favour of an often disquieting exploration of the inner self.
Another British surrealist, Lee Miller, followed an entirely different path: after building a successful career as a surrealist photographer and model in Paris, she became a photojournalist during the second world war. Miller was present at the liberation of the concentration camps Buchenwald and Dachau, and the photo of her taking a bath in Hitler's tub has become iconic. Often remembered more as a model and muse – she was married to Penrose – Miller recently had her story retold in Lee, a film starring Kate Winslet in the title role.
Maruja Mallo, shortly to be the subject of a major retrospective at the Centro Botín in Santander, Spain, lived and worked in Madrid. She knew major Spanish surrealists like Salvador Dalí and Federico García Lorca, but unlike them she remained in Spain for her whole career – aside from her exile to Argentina during the civil war. Her work incorporated Spanish folk imagery, but became more geometric and abstract. Mallo was a writer as well as a painter, contributing to magazines and books.
Surrealism was an especially multidisciplinary movement. Along with writing, film-making was popular, tying the movement to modernity despite its impulses towards timelessness. This plethora of mediums reflects how surrealism is, at its core, a practice of thinking radically differently, using words as well as images – any medium in fact, so long as it brings the unconscious out into the world.
'We are in a wave of rediscovery around women generally,' says Tate St Ives curator Katy Norris, 'and it's allowing us to recognise differences among them – they weren't a single breakaway group.' In fact, the basic surrealist impulse of dreams, sexuality and obsession had a global reach and appeal: unlike previous avant-garde movements in the early 20th century, which often sought to overturn previous -isms, surrealism quickly stopped being so centralised. The diversity among its adherents' lives, styles and priorities is huge. 'Surrealism responds to uncertainty,' says Norris, 'so it speaks to us now in times of uncertainty.'
That impulse to examine one's inner self feels very familiar today. But the magnanimity of the surrealists – with their unflinching drive to put themselves into their art in all their irrational, weird glory – is different from the tide of social media-driven, self-critical narcissism that's so prominent today. The fierce individualism of these artists, these women who were so relentlessly themselves, is a tonic. It's no wonder they are capturing public attention like never before. In a world that feels increasingly unpredictable, there's a real resonance in women embracing instability and using it to fuel their creative work. It is, says Norris, 'a perfect storm'.

The rapper appeared in Perth Magistrates Court for a second time on March 11, 2025, and pleaded not guilty to all charges. He was told to appear in the District Court of Western Australia on July 13. On June 13, two new charges of sexual penetration without consent were filed against Filly. During a court hearing in November, the British-Colombian saw his bail request put on hold until later that day. ABC Australia covered the story, noting that Perth barrister Seamus Rafferty SC is representing the entertainer. Rafferty commented on the denied bail, stating: "This has already made headlines. Given the nature of social media, the nature of people jumping on bandwagons, given the nature of (the) power imbalance between the parties." ‌ A TikTok video from Perth's Bar1 Nightclub went viral last year, showcasing Filly – who has appeared in Channel 4's The Great Celebrity Bake Off – performing at the venue. Meanwhile, in a sombre contrast, images depicting injuries allegedly sustained by a woman were presented to the court. "No ordinary person can consent in those circumstances," stated the prosecutor in reference to the gruesome photos, adding: "Across her body is a history of violent acts, ... we say those photos and what is alleged is beyond the pale, beyond what could be considered to be a consensual act." Filly, who was born in Colombia and moved to London aged two as a refugee with his mum and sister began his YouTube career in 2013 before releasing his debut single Take Time in 2017. He went onto host shows Hot Property and Don't Scream on BBC Three and has also appeared in Soccer Aid and The Great Stand Up to Cancer Bake Off. Filly's 10-day trial is scheduled to start on 20 July 2026.

Former England soccer captain David Beckham, Oscar-winning actor Gary Oldman and The Who's frontman Roger Daltrey were knighted in King Charles III 's birthday honors list released late Friday. Elaine Paige, the renowned musicals singer, Booker Prize-winning novelist Pat Barker and former Conservative government minister Penny Mordaunt were given damehoods, the female equivalent of a knighthood. The honors, which aim to reward individuals for their contributions to British life, are awarded twice a year to celebrities and public figures as well as ordinary people: Once at New Year's, and then in June to mark the king's birthday. The winners are chosen by civil servants' committees based on nominations from the government and the public. The awards are usually given out by the king or a senior royal acting in his place at Buckingham Palace. The Sirs Beckham, 50, was widely expected to be knighted following speculation last week that appeared to be based on a conversation he had with the monarch at the Chelsea Flower Show last month. As well as representing England 115 times, including 59 times as captain, Beckham played for some of Europe's most venerable clubs, most notably Manchester United and Real Madrid. He has been knighted for his services to sport and to charity, having partnered with UNICEF, the U.N.'s children's fund, for two decades and campaigned with a charity working to eradicate malaria. Beckham also played a pivotal role in London being awarded the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. 'Growing up in east London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honor," he said. Oldman, 67, was recognized for his services to drama both on screen and on stage. He won an Oscar for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in the 2017 film 'Darkest Hour," and recently dazzled audiences in the Apple TV spy thriller series ' Slow Horses.' Daltrey, who co-founded The Who in 1964, has been recognized for services to charity as well as music, having been a patron of 'Teenage Cancer Trust' since 2000. The 81-year-old, who led the charity's concert series at Royal Albert Hall for more than two decades, said he was humbled by the award. 'It's a dream come true for me, but it's especially a dream because the charity means so much," he said. The Dames Paige, 77, was honoured for her services to charity as well as music. She has held senior roles at a charity supporting young people with acquired brain injury and another one that supports disabled tennis players. 'I've got all these different emotions coming at me all at once," she said. "I'm proud and I feel grateful and I'm thrilled and surprised, and so it's been quite a lot to take in.' Barker, 82, known for 'The Regeneration Trilogy," said she thought the letter announcing her damehood was from 'really angry' tax authorities. 'Nobody else does that kind of quality of paper," she said. 'I still sort of had to read the first paragraph several times before it sank in.' A year on from losing her seat at the general election when her Conservative Party lost office, Mordaunt said it was 'lovely to be appreciated in this way.' Mordaunt, 52, saw her profile boosted during the king's coronation ceremony in 2023. The former lawmaker made a memorable appearance bearing the 'sword of state," the first time the duty had been carried out by a woman. The 'Companion' Antony Gormley, the sculptor who was knighted in 2014, was made a 'Companion of Honour' for his services to art. The award is one of the most prestigious that the monarch can bestow to citizens in Britain and across the Commonwealth, as there are only 65 companions at any one time. Introduced in 1917 by King George V, the award recognizes people who have made 'a major contribution to the arts, science, medicine, or government lasting over a long period of time.' Current members include British environmentalist David Attenborough, Canadian author Margaret Atwood and one of Britain's greatest-ever athletes Sebastian Coe. Hundreds more are awarded The honors don't just reward people in the public eye. More than 1,200 people received honours in the latest list. Women made up 48% of those honored, with 11% of recipients from ethnic minority backgrounds. The oldest recipient was 106-year-old World War II veteran William Irwin, who was awarded a British Empire Medal, for his services to the community. The youngest was 11-year-old disability campaigner Carmela Chillery-Watson, who was made a 'Member of the Most Excellent Order British Empire," or MBE. Chillery-Watson, who has LMNA congenital muscular dystrophy, has become the youngest ever recipient of the award for helping raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for Muscular Dystrophy UK. In what is thought to be a first, three members of the same family were named in the same list. Jenna Speirs, her mother Caroline and father Duncan were each awarded a British Empire Medal for founding a children's cancer charity called Calum's Cabin after Jenna's twin brother died of an inoperable brain tumour aged 12. Campaigners who have fought to tackle the rise of knife crime were also recognized. Pooja Kanda, whose 16-year-old son was murdered with a ninja sword near his home, was awarded the Order of the British Empire, or OBE. Alison Madgin, the mother of 18-year-old Samantha Madgin, who was knifed to death, was made an MBE alongside her daughter Carly Barrett.

But today to celebrate King Charles ' birthday at Trooping the Colour, Anne joined the parade on horseback for another year. Wearing the traditional Blues and Royals mounted uniform in her role as gold stick in waiting, she was was joined on horseback by Prince Edward and Prince William. Anne's steed for the day was Noble, a horse that she rode in the parade last year, who earned a reputation for being 'naughty' after Charles had to control her at Trooping in 2023. ‌ ‌ Charles' official birthday was marked with a display of military pomp and pageantry but at the King's request the event acknowledged the aviation disaster that claimed the lives of 241 passengers and crew, including more than 50 British nationals, as well as around 30 people on the ground. The Royal Procession was accompanied by the Sovereign's Escort of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and the sounds of the Band of the Household Cavalry, led by two shire drum horses bearing solid silver kettle drums. Senior officers taking part in Trooping also wore black armbands as a mark of respect for the aviation victims, as did the coachmen and women from the Royal Mews, driving carriages carrying members of the royal family or riding on a coach's lead horse as a postilion. A minute's silence will be observed after the King has inspected the guardsmen on the parade ground. It will be signalled by a bugler sounding the Last Post and will end with the Reveille. Anne's return to her beloved horse comes one year after she suffered serious injuries, including bruises and a concussion, as the result of a horse. ‌ King Charles' sister had set out alone and on foot to feed her chickens on her Gatcombe estate in Gloucestershire before becoming involved in an incident, where she is believed to have been struck from behind by a horse. The Princess was rushed to hospital by ambulance and was treated as an in-patient before being discharged several days later to convalesce at home. At the time Buckingham Palace said she had been admitted "as a precautionary measure for observation', but the princess later revealed the true horror of the accident. When Princess Anne returned to Southmead Hospital in Bristol where she was treated for her injuries, she told hospital staff that it was 'useful' to meet them as she was still unable to recall what happened. 'You've been filling in the blanks, which partly, from my perspective, is really useful to know how it happened, because I seriously don't have any idea, and sadly, I don't have huge memories of being in here either,' she said.
