Andrea Russo, a 35-year-old builder from Calcinate in Italy, was able to run through the terminal, bust through a security door and then sprint onto the tarmac.
One Brit passenger, Ryan Trumpeter, 37, was on a Ryanair plane to Manchester on the same runway when the drama unfolded - and he witnessed the emergency response while his flight was delayed.
Ryan, from West Bromwich, told The Sun: 'Our pilot had no idea what was going on, but told everyone to look to their right because there had been an incident.
"The whole plane was really confused - at first we thought it might have been a terrorist incident, that's what people were saying."
Word finally got round that a man had died after breaking onto the runway.
Training manager Ryan said that - along with other passengers - he was not particularly surprised to hear about the security lapse.
He noticed going through security that the standards were "crap" compared to British airports.
One scene in particular inside the terminal had made him particularly concerned.
Ryan said: "While we were going through the security gates, there was a man going absolutely mental at the staff. He was shouting in their face and just going crazy.
"There was a policeman right there but he wasn't doing anything, just holding his hand up.

"If that had been in the UK, he'd definitely have been escorted away.
"At the other end, other security officers were busy training a group of staff."
Ryan is not the only one asking urgent questions about the security operation at Orio al Serio.
Sources familiar with airport's system said the man's path through restricted areas was both rapid and shocking, La Voce del Patriota reported.
As Italy's third busiest airport, the site is equipped with layers of checks, barriers, and surveillance.
Yet the man allegedly bypassed them all, on foot, in broad daylight, and under pursuit.

Aviation authorities and police are now under pressure to explain how someone with no clearance managed to access the runway so quickly — and why intervention came too late.
The builder reportedly drove his Fiat 500 the wrong way into the airport arrivals area and ditched his car near the terminal.
After entering the ground-floor terminal, he is said to have forced his way through a security door in a matter of seconds.
The door led directly from the arrivals hall to the aircraft parking area — a supposedly high-security zone.
He was spotted by a police officer and chased, but still managed to sprint across the tarmac and reach a Volotea Airbus A319 just as it was preparing for taxiing.
The authorities are now facing tough questions about how this could have been allowed to happen at one of Italy's busiest travel hubs.

An airline spokesperson said: "A person, who was not a passenger or airport personnel, trespassed onto the runway while the aircraft was preparing for takeoff.
"Sadly, the person was struck by the engine and has passed
away.
"The airline deeply regrets this tragic incident and extends its condolences to the family of the person involved.
"All 154 passengers on board, along with the 6 Volotea crew members, are physically safe.
"Passengers were promptly deboarded and taken to a designated area, where provisions were made available. Psychological support was also offered to both passengers and crew members."
Giovanni Sanga, CEO of the group which operates Milan Bergamo Airport, offered his "personal condolences to Andrea's family.
He said: "The dramatic event has shocked the entire airport community.
"First of all, I would like to express my personal condolences and those of the company to the victim's family, to whom we are close in this terrible moment."
While waiting on the tarmac, Ryan could see "loads of police and fire engines", which "made a barrier" in front of the Volotea plane.
He said: 'We managed to take off about an hour-and-a-half later - we were the only flight that didn't have to disembark.
'It's all just really odd. Someone shouldn't be able to just run onto the tarmac like that past all the security."

Southport victim Bebe King's family slam new plans to share suspects' ethnicity
Bebe King's grandfather said the actions of the far-right and Nigel Farage's Reform UK party in bid to "make a political gain" had been "despicable" in the wake of the horrific tragedy Southport victim Bebe King's family have urged the government to shelve new police guidance encouraging forces to publish the ethnicity and immigration status of high-profile suspects. Little Bebe was the youngest of the three little girls killed in the horrific knife attack last year. The six-year-old was murdered alongside Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Bebe's grandfather, Michael Weston King, said they had been failed by the "despicable" far-right who "tried to make a political gain" from their loss. Mr Weston King urged ministers to reconsider their support for the new official guidance, slamming it as "completely irrelevant" information about suspects. He also hit out at Nigel Farage's "despicable" Reform UK, whose party has been calling for the guidance to be an enforced policy. Mr Weston King told the Guardian: "This apparent kowtowing to the likes of Farage and Reform, who surely want such a policy in place, is extremely disappointing, though perhaps not surprising. 'I not only speak for myself but for all of the King family when I say that the ethnicity of any perpetrator, or indeed their immigration status, is completely irrelevant. Mental health issues, and the propensity to commit crime, happens in any ethnicity, nationality or race. 'The boy who took Bebe had been failed by various organisations, who were aware of his behaviour, and by the previous government's lack of investment in [the official anti-extremism strategy] Prevent . As a result, we were also failed by this.' He added that the family 'were failed further, by the likes of Reform and the right wing, as they tried to make political gain from our tragedy, only causing further misery to us and others, which was despicable'. Teen killer, Axel Rudakubana, was jailed for a minimum of a 52 years for his attack on the Taylor Swift themed dance class full of children in July last year. In the days that followed, fascist thugs used the tragedy to incite riots across the UK. They spread false information that Rudakubana, a black Brit born in Wales to a Christian family, was in fact a Muslim asylum seeker. The unrest saw scores of police officers injured, mosques and asylum hotels targeted and people of colour lynched indiscriminately in the streets. Home secretary, Yvette Cooper, welcomed new police guidelines released on Wednesday, despite criticism from anti-racism campaigners and women's groups. It follows claims of police 'cover up' that two men charged in connection with the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, were asylum seekers. The far-right then staged an anti-immigration protest, where some worw Nazi imagery on their clothes and told a crowd the 'far right must unite'. A judge defied court guidance to publicly name underage Rudakubana, who was 17 at the time of the attack, in a bid to stop the riots. But the violence only stopped once hundreds of thugs involved began receiving prison sentences. Mr Weston King said: 'Though we are not interested in retribution or revenge, we were glad to see that the rioters, along with those who spread lies and hatred online, received prison sentences. I very much hope that the mood and opinion of the nation is in keeping with ours, and that this plan does not go ahead.'

Lost girl, 6, sexually assaulted at major waterpark after stranger ‘offered to help her before dragging her into woods'
The attack comes after a significant rise in sexual assaults in swimming pools reported in Germany PARK HORROR Lost girl, 6, sexually assaulted at major waterpark after stranger 'offered to help her before dragging her into woods' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A SIX-year-old girl was sexually assaulted after getting separated from her parents at a water park - with the depraved perpetrator still on the run. The facility, run by Europa-park, is located in Rust, Baden-Württemberg, near the French border. German police said the sick attack took place on Saturday, August 9, L'Alsace reported. After sexually abusing her, the suspect reportedly left her alone in the woods. She was then found by a local passerby around 10pm the same day. The area she was discovered in was about 5km from the water park, and she was only wearing a swimsuit. The suspect is reportedly a 31-year-old Romanian national. He was living in the local region at the time of the attack, reports say. Cops are desperately continuing their manhunt for the suspect. And they put out an appeal for any information that may lead to his arrest. I was sexually assaulted hundreds of feet in air while on paraglide ride during Tunisia holiday… I felt violated and dirty Police said: "Anyone present in Rulantica or in the wooded area north of the park on Saturday between 8:20 p.m. and 10:20 p.m. who may have noticed the presence of the man and the girl should contact the German authorities." The beloved Rulantica water park can hold a maximum of 6,000 visitors per day. It comes after there were reportedly hundreds of reports of sexual assaults in public swimming pools in Germany - in what has been called an epidemic. In one of the worst hit regions, 74 alleged attacks have been recorded recently with several involving children - including eight young girls in one day. The issue started to raise questions across Germany after a concerning number of reports were made in June. Cops arrested four Syrian suspects, aged 18 to 28, the next month and accused them of sexually assaulting up to eight girls in a public swimming pool in Hesse. The victims were aged between 11 to 16 and had all been at the Barbarossabad pool on the same day. Criminal charges were filed against all of the suspects, who were also been banned from the pool following the harrowing incident.

I escaped horror house fire that killed my two kids – trolls said I should have saved them… but I couldn't breathe
The mother only narrowly escaped sustaining serious injuries 'MOTHER'S NIGHTMARE' I escaped horror house fire that killed my two kids – trolls said I should have saved them… but I couldn't breathe Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A MUM who escaped a house fire which killed her two children says vicious trolls tell her she should have saved them. Jade Horton desperately tried to rescue her two children, Issac and Sienna Jenkins, aged three and seven, in the horror blaze at their family home five years ago. Jade was woken to the terrible sound of her daughter screaming in her bedroom. Upon opening her door, Jade was quickly overpowered by the smoke and heat emitting from the floor below. The neighbours had already phoned the fire brigade from the family's back garden as Jade rushed to her bedroom window to scream for help. She was also trying frantically to get in touch with her partner Andy who had already left for work. Racing back from work, Andy tried to make it into the house with two other neighbours but the blaze was too strong for them to reach Jade and the kids upstairs. Firefighters reached the house within minutes but couldn't enter the property as the fire had advanced so quickly. Jade had previously told an inquest into the tragedy: "I heard Sienna calling for me. I tried to open her door but couldn't. There was smoke coming from Sienna's bedroom. "I couldn't get downstairs. The heat was so intense. "I went to my bedroom window and shouted as loud as I could 'Help, help." At least one dead as wildfires spread across Europe with Mount Vesuvius closed in Italy & French vineyards turned to ash After she could no longer hear Sienna, Jade thought her children had been saved. She says that if she knew her children were still in the house she would have "died with them". Jade escaped by jumping from her window and sustained traumatic injuries leaving her body broken. Screaming for her children, covered in glass and blood, her neighbours avoided her gaze as her partner said "they're gone". "I remember hearing this guttural, animal-like scream that must have come from me – but it was like I wasn't in my own body," she told The Mail. Jade broke both her heel bones, ankles, pelvis, her sternum, right wrist, three fingers and all ten toes from the jump. Her spine was also broken in four places and shattered her right-hip socket - her chances of survival were slim. After numerous surgeries, Jade was told she would be left permanently paralysed. When the tragic story hit the news, she was subject to a barrage of abuse and vicious online trolling accusing her of abandoning her children to save herself. She said every article she read on what happened was accompanied by comments saying she had "left her children to die". "I thought I couldn't be in any more pain, but that hurt the most," she said. Even Jade began to doubt herself and questioned whether she could have done more. But an official inquest later revealed she couldn't have done anything else to save Issac and Sienna. The inquest also heard how the blaze reached around 1000C and the house's fire alarms didn't work with a "perfect storm" of conditions drawing the fire and smoke upwards. It also ruled that TV electrics in Issac's bedroom likely caused the blaze - Jade was paid a settlement by the manufacturer last year. Speaking five years later, Jade smiles at her final memories of her children. She sang Issac his favourite nursery rhymes and read Sienna her favourite story that night as she tucked them into bed. "I'm glad I cuddled them and kissed them before watching them both fall asleep happy that night," she said. Jade was treated in hospital for months but still managed to walk again despite doctors saying it wasn't possible. But mentally she was broken, haunted by flashbacks and suicidal thoughts. Since then, Jade turned to alternative therapies and has retrained as a spiritual healer finding peace in helping others. She has moved house and even won a Woman of Courage award for building a holistic business in the face of adversity. When she went on stage to collect her award, she said she could hear Issac and Sienna cheering "louder than anyone else".
