Australia's injury woes continue as Pollard steps in for Porecki in third test against Lions

SYDNEY (AP) — Another injury has forced late changes to Australia's lineup for the third rugby test against the British and Irish Lions, with Billy Pollard promoted to start at hooker after David Porecki and Matt Faessler were ruled out of Saturday's match.
Porecki was ruled out Friday with a leg injury, making way for Pollard to move into the starting XV off the bench for his 10th test. Faessler's calf muscle injury meant Brandon Paenga-Amosa had to be drafted in from outside the Wallabies squad assembled in Sydney.
Head coach Joe Schmidt had already unveiled four changes to Australia's starting XV and another two on the bench on Thursday after the contentious, last-gasp 29-26 loss in the second test at Melbourne last weekend.
Another injury to Porecki compounds the absence of flanker Rob Valetini — who missed the series opener and had a big impact on the second test before leaving at halftime — and veteran prop Allan Ala'alatoa.
'Gutted to lose, I guess, a few, great players ... but we have a lot of confidence,' in Paenga-Amosa,' Wallabies captain Harry Wilson said at the captain's run on the eve of the test. 'Brendan joined us yesterday afternoon, obviously after a bit of a tough Thursday training session.'
Wilson said the 29-year-old Paenga-Amosa, had already played tour games against the Lions and was an experienced Wallaby.
'He's got a lot of confidence, and he's coming into the group and he's fitting very quickly,' Wilson said.
Australia hasn't lost three tests in a Lions tour since 1904 and is facing a confident British and Irish squad that is 8-0 in Australia, including victory in the first test in Brisbane, the second test in Melbourne, wins over Super Rugby franchises Western Force,Queensland Reds, Waratahs and Brumbies and two invitational teams.
Taniela Tupou was recalled at tighthead and the scrumhalf Nic White is returning for his final international appearance in a reworked Wallabies lineup trying to prevent the British and Irish Lions completing a 3-0 sweep.

Lionel Messi ruled out for Inter Miami's Leagues Cup match against Pumas UNAM

Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano confirmed that Lionel Messi will miss the team's Leagues Cup match on Wednesday against Pumas UNAM due to injury. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Messi suffered a "minor" muscle injury in his right leg and was subbed out in the 11th minute of Saturday's win against Necaxa. Mascherano described Messi's injury as "discomfort" following the match and told reporters that he would undergo further testing. On Tuesday, Mascherano told reporters that "within the bad news, it's good news." "We don't like to estimate a return, especially in Leo's [case]," Mascherano said, via ESPN. "He usually recovers very well from injuries and above all, normally does with speed. So we will see, but clearly for tomorrow he is unavailable. But then we will see how he feels, how he progresses." Inter Miami wraps up Phase One of Leagues Cup against Pumas and has earned five points after two matches with a regulation win and a victory after penalty kicks. The top four teams in both the MLS and Liga MX tables will advance to the knockout portion of the tournament. The Herons must win on Wednesday to have a chance to move on and would next play Aug. 19 or 20. Should Inter Miami fail to advance, they will resume their MLS schedule on Sunday against Orlando City.

Injured Manchester United starter still hoping to feature vs Arsenal

Andre Onana is still hoping to be fit to face Arsenal in Manchester United's first game of the new Premier League campaign, as he works to recover from injury. Photo by PATRICK T. FALLON/AFP via Getty Images The Manchester Evening News report in their print edition on Tuesday, August 5th that Andre Onana hopes to be available for Manchester United's opening Premier League fixture against Arsenal. Onana has been out of action since the first week of pre-season training with a hamstring injury, and he's already missed all but one of their friendly matches. Yet he's optimistic he'll be ready in time for the Arsenal clash. 'I feel good, I feel great,' Onana said on Sunday. 'It's been a few difficult weeks but, yes, hopefully, I will be back for the start of the season. 'I'm enjoying the training with my guys and we are looking forward.' Photo by PATRICK T. FALLON/AFP via Getty Images A return for Onana against Arsenal would be a boost for United, given the initial timeline suggested he wouldn't be back until August 23rd at the very earliest. Even that would be a week too late to play against Mikel Arteta's side. Lisandro Martinez will be out of the match with his ACL injury, but Joshua Zirkzee is also expected to return in time for the Arsenal game. Noussair Mazraoui is being assessed for a hamstring injury, so he may or may not be available depending on the outcome of that assessment. Photo via As it stands, Arsenal are only expected to be without Gabriel Jesus for the trip to Old Trafford, though it remains unclear how serious Leandro Trossard's injury scare will turn out to be.

Jets' Mason Taylor out at least a week with high ankle sprain; Tyrod Taylor dealing with knee injury

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets rookie tight end Mason Taylor has a high ankle sprain that will keep him sidelined for at least a week. Taylor, a second-round pick out of LSU, had been one of the bright spots on offense for the Jets during the first few weeks of training camp. The son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor didn't practice Monday or Tuesday after a day off Sunday. High ankle sprains often take several weeks to heal. But Coach Aaron Glenn, who announced the nature of the injury after practice Tuesday, doesn't believe Taylor's progress will be hampered by missing some practice time this summer. 'He's a damn good player,' Glenn said. 'He has the pedigree of being an NFL player because of his dad. I think he's going to be just fine. I'm not worried about that player at all.' Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor has a knee injury that is being evaluated. The 36-year-old Taylor is expected to back up starter Justin Fields this season. 'Listen, we all know he's an older player and obviously when you get to that point, there's some wear and tear,' Glenn said. 'So we wanted to make sure we get it taken care of so he can be ready for us when the season starts.' Glenn added that the knee issue isn't expected to keep Taylor sidelined for long. 'I don't see it as a long-term (thing),' the coach said. 'But I don't want to just stamp that right now, but I am sure it is not.' It was a busy day for the trainers, who had to handle a few other injuries at practice as the Jets prepare for their preseason opener at Green Bay on Saturday. Defensive tackle Byron Cowart injured an ankle during individual drills and rode the cart in the passenger seat from the field into the facility. Rookie cornerback Azareye'h Thomas injured his right shoulder when he fell on it while trying to break up a pass. Thomas was a third-round pick out of Florida State and is expected to have a role this season. Edge rusher Will McDonald had back spasms during individual drills and sat out the rest of practice. The Jets are already without Pro Bowl defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (calf), left guard John Simpson (back) and special teams ace Kris Boyd (shoulder). Rookie safety Malachi Moore is being worked slowly back into practice as he recovers from an oblique injury. He was a fourth-rounder out of Alabama. ___ AP NFL:
