Maranoa Charlie captains strong Bond squad at York

Although trained by Christopher Head in France, the Prix Jean Prat runner-up will have plenty of support when he represents the racing entity of the late Reg Bond which is now overseen by son Charlie, as he seeks Group One compensation in the newly-upgraded Sky Bet City of York Stakes.
'Christopher has said he is in great form and is looking forward to bringing him over for the Group One,' said Charlie Bond.

'This has been his aim ever since the Prix Jean Prat and we will just have to see what turns up, but his determination and how he battles against horses is tremendous and his main asset.'
Maranoa Charlie may be the main attraction for the Bond Thoroughbred team, but the owners – who hail from nearby Pocklington – received a boost on Monday when Paddy Twomey's Bonus Time booked her ticket to the Knavesmire in winning at Naas.
Bond added: 'She was identified by Paddy when she was in the Ascot sale and she's got a lovely pedigree by Too Darn Hot. He had seen her racing in Ireland and she was good at Naas.
'She heads to York now for the seven-furlong handicap on the Thursday (British EBF Fillies' Handicap).'
Twomey could also saddle once-raced two-year-old Bond in the British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes, while the likes of Pocklington, unbeaten three-year-old Big Leader and recent course scorer Air Force One are all trained locally by Geoff Oldroyd and pencilled on the York teamsheet.
'Hopefully the Reg Bond colours can land a winner at the local track and one of the best racecourses in the world,' continued Bond.
'We're flying at the moment and having plenty of winners and Paddy is running at a 35 per cent strike-rate for us and Geoff Oldroyd is at 30 per cent which is pretty much amazing.
'We've quite a big team going to York. Pocklington will go for the six-furlong handicap on the Saturday (Sky Bet Constantine Handicap) and we expect him to have a big chance as he just had a big row of horses in front of him and had to try to switch out last time.
'Big Leader is unbeaten, he's won three out of three and we've had some big offers come in for him. We're not interested and he will head for the Sky Bet Mile Handicap on the Friday.
'Paddy is bringing Bond across for the Convivial, he was very green first time out round a bend in Ireland, but we're hoping he can be very competitive.
'We will also run Air Force One who won over five furlongs last time, but is now trying to get five and a half furlongs on the Wednesday (Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool Handicap). He's all-out speed and I'm sure he will be near the front with half a furlong to go, it's just if he lasts home.
'It's great that we have this team for York. We missed Royal Ascot with some of ours, which was hard to do, but at the end of the day we knew we would have a team ready to go for York and hopefully we have some lively chances.'

Bookies sweating as punters trigger massive gamble on horse with ‘huge appeal' for £1.25million York race

NERVY bookies are fearing a massive gamble on a horse with 'huge appeal' will leave them staring into a financial blackhole at York next week. The price has completely collapsed on Japanese raider Danon Decile in the £1.25million Juddmonte International Stakes. Available at 16-1 with Paddy Power, he is been supported into 10-3 as punters take advantage of generous each-way terms. You can still get three places if you back a horse now - but bookies think the feature race could cut to two on the day if we get fewer than eight runners. As it stands it looks like Daryz, Anmaat, Whirl, Minnie Hauk, White Birch and dual Derby hero Lambourn are highly unlikely to run. All either have other arrangements or, in the case of Anmaat and White Birch, will surely have the ground against them. Danon Decile has arrived in Britain in peak physical fitness and stretched his legs on the Newmarket gallops last weekend. He has gone from 100-1 no-hoper to Group 1 superstar in a little over a year. Danon Decile was available at triple figure odds ahead of his Japanese Derby win in May 2024. He didn't win again until January this year but backed that victory up when he beat King George winner Calandagan in the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic in April. Victory there was worth just shy of £3m so he'll be taking a pay cut if he wins the Juddmonte, with its first-place prize of £708,875. But at least he could repay his faithful backers who have punted him off the boards for next Wednesday's contest. Paddy Power's Paul Binfield said: "The Japanese raider is by far our worst result in York's marquee event and is now only marginally above 3-1 having opened at 16s. "Punters have really latched on to the four-year-old, partly due to the fact that he was too powerful for subsequent King George hero Calandagan in the Dubai Sheema Classic. "But also because he has made huge each-way appeal in an ante post market that is currently three places on offer although there is every chance the race will cut up significantly and less than eight take part reducing the places to two. "He's probably close to the bottom of his price now and provided Delacroix and Ombudsman also take part, we look set for an absolute blockbuster on the Knavesmire." Spicy Marg all set to take on her elders in Nunthorpe

An impressive winner on her Newmarket debut in early June, Michael Bell's charge subsequently disappointed in the Queen Mary and the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes, but bounced back to form in some style over five furlongs at Goodwood two weeks ago. As a juvenile filly Spicy Marg will carry just eight stone if she steps up to take on her elders at Group One level on the Knavesmire and Bell is keen to roll the dice. He said: 'The plan is to give it a go. All the speed analysts seem to think she should be having a crack at it – her figures are very, very good – and she clearly is in very good form. 'I think it's very relevant her dam (Main Desire) won two Listed races over five furlongs on the Knavesmire, so it's in her genes she should like the track and I strongly think she will. 'We're very happy with her and very much looking forward to it.' Connections are ready to pay the £40,000 supplementary fee to add Spicy Marg to the Nunthorpe field at the weekend, with Hong Kong-based rider Harry Bentley booked for the ride. 'Harry is waiting for his licence to be rubber-stamped by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, he tells me that's a formality, so the intention is for him to ride,' said Bell, who won the Nunthorpe in 2011 with Margot Did. 'She wants good, fast ground. We'll wait until Saturday to confirm it, but the intention is very much to supplement her at this stage.' Another filly bound for the Nunthorpe is the William Knight-trained Frost at Dawn, who was a neck second to American Affair in the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot before finishing fourth in the King George at Goodwood. Knight said: 'She doesn't need to do much between now and then, she's put her weight back on already. 'I just hope and pray the rain stays away at York and if it's good to firm ground there I think she could run a massive race. 'I think she's in the form of her life at the moment, she just looks so much stronger this year, and I think York will really suit her as a track. 'I just think it's key that rain stays away and we get a good preparation from now into York. If she can repeat the form from her Ascot run, that puts her bang there.'

More Thunder moving up in class at the weekend

William Haggas' rapidly improving four-year-old won over 10 furlongs for Sir Michael Stoute last season, but his new trainer wasted no time in reverting to sprinting. He won a six-furlong handicap at the Craven meeting off 87, followed up at the Guineas meeting off 92, was beaten a head off 98 in the Wokingham and won the Bunbury Cup over seven furlongs last time out off the same mark. Now up to 103, connections feel it is time to test the water at a higher level, starting with this Group Two contest. Bruce Raymond, racing manager to More Thunder's owner Saeed Suhail, said: 'I can't see why he won't be up to it, he's unlucky not to be unbeaten this season. 'Because he's only been running in handicaps his rating is still pretty low compared to some in the race, but I'd be very disappointed if he wasn't up to this level. 'He's very versatile regarding trip. For now I think seven suits him, but I know his jockey (Tom Marquand) thinks he's at his best over a strong-run six, which is quite hard to believe given Sir Michael started off with him at 10 furlongs.' With More Thunder in action this weekend, Never So Brave, in the same ownership and trained by Andrew Balding, has the Sky Bet City of York Stakes on his agenda. 'He'll be going to the new Group One at York, he's improving with every run and looked good at Ascot,' said Raymond. Also in contention for the Newbury race are Lennox Stakes winner Witness Stand, the Charlie Appleby pair of Notable Speech and Shadow Of Light, Marco Botti's Great Generation and Eve Johnson Houghton's Rage Of Bamby.
