Protest at Burnet Middle connected to potential loss of teachers, administrators
This comes as Burnet, Dobie and Webb middle schools face a critical school year ahead where they must show signs of improvement or face state intervention from the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
AISD says expert teachers could improve failing schools
In August 2024, Dobie was identified for Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) under the district's Federal Accountability System for the third consecutive year. If a campus fails to exit the CSI for multiple years, then this requires the campus to enter a Turnaround Plan.
Discussions about what the district will do moving forward have included closing Dobie and moving students to Lamar Middle School. However, the district is no longer exploring a temporary closure for Dobie, so it is now proposing the district-managed restart plan.
To turn around the lower-performing schools, Austin Independent School District is trying to hire the best teachers it can get to replace some of the current ones at all three schools.
The teachers the district chooses to remove from their position could then be placed in other AISD schools, according to the district.
'I don't think the new teachers are going to have an easier time — I think they're being set up to fail — and that's a horrible feeling. It's also horrible to lose our teachers who we really like,' said Ellen Knox, who has a child attending Burnet Middle School.
On Tuesday night, the Burnet Middle School Parent Teacher Association will meet with AISD Superintendent Matias Segura to make their voices heard.
The district will host a job fair on Wednesday and Thursday to look for teachers with a track record of improving students' grades.
The positions are eligible for up to $20,000 in stipends to support one of the three restart campuses, according to AISD.

How many students are homeless in Austin ISD?
AUSTIN (KXAN) – With more than 70,000 students, Austin Independent School District is the largest school district in Central Texas. About 1,000 of those students are experiencing homelessness, according to AISD data. KXAN requested data about students in AISD experiencing homelessness from 2019 to 2025 back in December. At that time there were 1,368 students who were experiencing homelessness in the district. The number of students can rise and fall through the year, as this population does move from time-to-time, and it can happen unexpectedly. Since 2019, the numbers of students experiencing homelessness has increased and decreased from year-to-year, but overall the numbers have remained above 1,200 students. The McKinney-Vento Act is a federal law that ensures homeless children and youth have access to public education just like their housed peers. 1,000+ students in Round Rock ISD considered homeless, numbers keep rising Districts around the state keep track of these at-risk kids and also keep tabs on where they are staying. According to the McKinney-Vento Act, students are considered homeless if they are unsheltered, living in a motel or hotel, living in a shelter or transitional housing, or if they are doubled up with other families in an apartment or home. In 2025, AISD had about 35 students who were unsheltered, about 280 students were living in shelters or transitional housing, about 70 students were living in motels or hotels and more than 970 students were doubling up — which is where multiple families are living under one room. There are many students across the state that go unidentified, though, some have no idea that there is help available. 'All this comes down to strong relationships between educators and students, and making sure we know where, one, where all our kids are coming from; and, two, they have to feel comfortable opening up when there is some kind of difficulty in their home life.' Four people dead in medical transport plane crash near New Mexico, Arizona border
ARIZONA (KRQE) — The remains of four people, who were killed when a medical transport plane crashed near the Arizona and New Mexico border on Tuesday afternoon, were escorted to the Green Meadows Funeral Home by Navajo Police Department officers and Apache County sheriffs on Wednesday morning. The aircraft was on the way to pick up a patient from a nearby hospital when the crash happened near the Chinle Airport at about 12:40 p.m. Next of kin has been notified by the Albuquerque aircraft company, CSI Aviation. There were no survivors. CSI Aviation released the following statement on Wednesday morning: 'It is with deep sadness that we confirm the loss of an aircraft resulting in the deaths of four CSI Aviation crew members, including two pilots and two healthcare providers. On the fifth of August 2025 at approximately 2:20pm, near Chinle, AZ, a CSI Aviation King Air that was dispatched to provide air ambulance services to patients in Eastern Arizona, was lost. Emergency responders arrived promptly at the scene, and recovery operations are ongoing. There were no patients or passengers on the aircraft. We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of those affected by this devastating event. Support services will be made available to families and our team. An investigation is underway in coordination with relevant authorities, including the National Transportation Safety Board , the Federal Aviation Administration, and local law enforcement. CSI Aviation is cooperating fully with the investigation. Safety is our highest priority, and we are committed to transparency as the investigation progresses. We ask for patience and privacy for the families during this difficult time.' — CSI Aviation The cause of the crash is not known at this time. 4 people die in crash of medical transport plane on Navajo Nation in northern Arizona
A small medical transport plane crashed and caught fire Tuesday on the Navajo Nation in northern Arizona, killing four people, the tribe said in a statement. A Beechcraft King Air 300 from the CSI Aviation company left Albuquerque, New Mexico, with two pilots and two health care providers, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and CSI Aviation. It crashed in the early afternoon near the airport in Chinle, about 300 miles (483 kilometers) northeast of Phoenix.
