S'wak power capacity exceeds demand

The Star27-05-2025
KUCHING: Sarawak now has sufficient electricity generation capacity to meet domestic needs, including supply to rural areas.
Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said currently, its total capacity stands at 5,898 megawatts (MW) compared to the current demand of 4,887MW.
He said this capacity has enabled Sarawak to plan energy generation strategically for the future, including targeting an electricity supply capacity of 10,000MW by 2030 to meet a projected demand increase of 7,074MW.
'By 2035, Sarawak has set a target of achieving a generation capacity of 15,000MW through various energy sources, including renewable energy such as solar, cascading power sources and pumped hydro energy storage systems.
'As part of the efforts towards establishing the Borneo Power Grid and the Asean Power Grid, we are also intensifying cross-border energy exports to realise our vision as the Battery of Asean,' he said during the winding-up session for his ministry at the state assembly sitting yesterday, Bernama reported.
Julaihi said among the additional renewable energy potentials being considered are large-scale solar farms and pumped hydro energy storage systems.
'Several private companies have also submitted proposals for renewable energy generation projects, which are currently in the feasibility study stage at locations such as Bengoh, Batang Ai, Bakun and Murum dams.
'For cascading energy sources, the ministry and Sarawak Energy have held 24 engagement sessions with the communities involved in the Sungai Gaat and Sungai Tutoh areas, including the implementation of the Muja Menua ceremony in Sungai Gaat on April 4 as part of an inclusive approach with the local community,' he said.
Julaihi also said that to date, Sarawak has exported around 100MW of energy to west Kalimantan since 2016 while exports to Sabah are expected to begin in the fourth quarter this year with a total of between 30MW and 50MW.
'Plans are being made to export about 1,000MW of energy to Peninsular Malaysia and up to 1,000MW to Singapore and Brunei,' he said.
The move, he added, is expected to strengthen Sarawak's position as a leader in sustainable energy in the region and support Asean's aspirations for a green and clean energy transition.

Singapore envoy lauds Malaysia's decisive Asean leadership

KUALA LUMPUR: Singapore commends Malaysia's leadership as Asean Chair in 2025 and credits Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his team for their swift and decisive actions during the recent armed conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. Malaysia's mediation effort resulted in a ceasefire agreement between the two neighbours. Singapore High Commissioner to Malaysia, Vanu Gopala Menon ( pic ), said the episode demonstrated that while Asean's consensus-based approach is important, a major crisis requires one to act without delay and with conviction. "Sometimes you need to act fast. Malaysia showed leadership by making the phone calls, bringing the two leaders to Kuala Lumpur and hosting them for talks that led to a ceasefire. "This is what we want to see, every government prepared to step in and tackle challenges head-on," he said on Bernama TV's The Nation, Diplomatic Dispatch programme titled "Malaysia And Singapore: A Bond Beyond Borders." Menon highlighted Malaysia's role in securing an agreement to admit Timor-Leste as Asean's newest member. He described the ability to bring parties with differing views on board as "a good sign of leadership." He said Asean continues to serve as a neutral and comfortable platform for major powers to meet, noting that the recent 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting brought together the foreign ministers of Russia, China, and the United States in various formats. On regional economic matters, Menon pointed to the planned signing of the upgraded Asean Trade in Goods Agreement in Kuala Lumpur this October as a positive step, along with efforts such as the Asean Power Grid to ensure the seamless flow of energy across borders. Turning to bilateral ties, Menon described Malaysia-Singapore relations as being in an excellent state, supported by strong political leadership on both sides. He noted that the Johor-Singapore Economic Zone (GSEZ), which was agreed to earlier this year, is already attracting interest from businesses exploring opportunities in both Johor and Singapore. "Singapore has its own strengths, Johor has its own strengths. Companies can decide where to locate their operations based on their needs. "Even before the incentives were announced, businesses were already scouting locations," he said. Menon added that people-to-people connections remain a vital part of the relationship. He cited the Volunteer Teachers Programme initiative, which has enabled young Singaporeans to teach English in Malaysian schools, including in rural areas. "This year marks the 60th anniversary of our diplomatic relations. Over the years, the relationship has grown from strength to strength, expanding into new areas such as the digital and green economies," he added. – Bernama

Govt Says TNB's Profit Margin Regulated At 7.3% Till 2027

The profit rate for Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is regulated by the government, with TNB's permitted profit margin maintained at 7.3 per cent during the fourth regulatory period (RP4) from 2025 to 2027. Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said TNB's profit rate remains at 7.3 per cent in RP4, similar to the rate set during the second regulatory period in 2018. 'If TNB profits exceed the regulated rate, the excess will be returned to consumers through the Electricity Industry Fund,' he said. He was responding to a question from Lim Guan Eng (Harapan-Bagan) on TNB's annual profits and the additional gains earned following the 14.2 per cent tariff rise for the commercial sector on July 1. Lim also asked whether the tariff hike could be postponed or staggered, given that TNB's profits rose by over 70 per cent last year. Akmal Nasrullah said the 7.3 per cent profit rate is reasonable in light of TNB's investments to upgrade and strengthen the national grid, especially to support the Asean Power Grid, the construction and maintenance of power plants, the installation of smart meters, and the digitalisation of the energy system. He added that this set profit rate is a balanced approach to ensure TNB remains stable as a utility company capable of providing better consumer services. 'It also ensures a reasonable return to TNB's major shareholders, which include government investment entities such as Khazanah Nasional Bhd, the Retirement Fund (KWAP), and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF). TNB paid RM15.75 billion in dividends between 2018 and 2023,' added Akmal Nasrullah.
