Brazil launches Women's Copa America title defence with 2-0 win over Venezuela
Venezuela created the better early chances with Dayana Rodriguez trying her luck from distance with a powerful long-range effort that went wide and Barbara Olivieri going close after a corner.
Brazil got the breakthrough just after the half-hour mark with Amanda Gutierres finishing off a well-worked move that began with Isadora Haas's deep cross to Giovana, who set up the striker to slot home.
Venezuela pushed hard for the equaliser after the break, and Brazilian goalkeeper Lorena had to make saves to deny a long-range effort from Deyna Castellanos and a header from Verónica Herrera.
Venezuelan keeper Nayluisa Caceres was also kept busy and prevented Brazil from increasing its lead by saving Duda Sampaio's free kick.

The defending champion sealed victory when Sampaio converted Giovana's header with a brilliant finish two minutes before the end.
'I'm leaving happy with the victory because it was a very difficult match, the quality of the Venezuelan team was surprising,' Sampaio said. 'South American teams have improved in quality.'
The victory took Brazil's record in the competition to 48 wins, 1 draw and two defeats from its 51 games. It was also its seventh successive win over Venezuela in the tournament.
Brazil faces Bolivia on Wednesday, while Venezuela meets Colombia in their next Group B fixtures.

Ravi Shastri's Blunt 'Virat Kohli' Message To Gautam Gambhir As Captain Shubman Gill Struggles
As the Manchester Test between India and England enters Day 5, the danger of a series loss keeps lurking. Though KL Rahul (87) and Shubman Gill (78) did very well in giving the team some stability after the loss of two wickets in the first over, the danger is still quite real, especially as India trail England by 137 runs. More than the bowlers' inefficiency, Shubman Gill's tactical flaws have contributed a lot to the team's current situation. Ravi Shastri, former India head coach, shared his and Virat Kohli 's example as he urged current coach Gautam Gambhir to lend a helping hand to skipper Gill, especially as the latter is at the start of his career as a captain. "I'll give an example of Virat. He was the other way round as far as Gill [is concerned]. He was ultra-aggressive, where you had to, at times, calm him down from the dressing room. It was as if he wanted five wickets every session. That doesn't happen. Sometimes, you've got to respect conditions and set fields accordingly," Shastri said during a discussion on Sky Sports Cricket. Gill has the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, and KL Rahul among senior players to consult with. Rishabh Pant, though not a veteran, is also seen as a person with a great tactical mind and is the team's designated vice-captain. With Pant not on the field due to an injury, Shastri said he needs others to rally around Gill to help him navigate the challenges better. "That's why team management becomes crucial. For Shubman Gill, it should be [the case] for his first year. The senior team members... they have to start being accountable, they have to have their own ideas. That should come from the bowlers as well, rather than the captain going to them. They've played 50-60 Test matches. That's what Stokes does; he wants to disrupt things and find ways to break partnerships," he asserted.

Team India break silence on Karun Nair's exclusion from Manchester Test: ‘Up to Gambhir and…'
Team India have finally broken their silence on not picking Karun Nair in the fourth Test match against England, despite captain Shubman Gill's proclamation that the 33-year-old batter would be backed in his reign. Notably, the England tour was meant to be a redemption arc for Nair, but the batter could not convert his starts into big scores in the first three matches and was subsequently dropped by the management in the fourth Test, with the number 3 spot being taken up by Sai Sudharsan. Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, while talking about the decision to drop Nair, said, 'Selection is obviously up to Gautam Gambhir and the captain Shubman Gill, and even if I'm part of it, it's not worth revealing. He [Gill] said that we'll back him, which means that the way he (Karun Nair) has batted in this series—it hasn't been bad batting. He's gotten good starts each time. Sometimes, if the team management feels that at this stage, maybe in the fourth Test match, pressure might build on him (Nair), then we might make a change. But that doesn't mean the team management isn't backing him.' Sudharsan, who replaced Nair in the match, scored his maiden half-century in the first innings while getting out for a first-ball duck to Chris Woakes in the second. The left-hander had also batted at the number 3 spot during the first Test match in Leeds but was promptly dropped for the second Test, creating confusion over who the new team management considers fit for the number 3 role. With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma taking retirement from Test cricket, there has been a big vacuum in the Indian team, and Nair was hoping to fill that. However, it isn't clear if the new management and selectors will continue to show faith in him beyond the tour of England. Team India scored 358 runs in the first innings of the match, but England out-batted the visitors as they put on 669 runs in reply and took a massive lead of 311 runs. The Indian team also had a horrific start to their second innings on Day 4, as Chris Woakes took two back-to-back wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudarshan to shock the visitors without a run on the board. From there on, KL Rahul and captain Gill stitched together a partnership for the next 62 overs to give India a chance to compete in this match. While a win may now be far-fetched for India, they can still try to tie the match by batting through all three sessions on Day 5.

India vs England 4th Test Live Updates Day 5: KL Rahul, Shubman Gill to resume battle as IND aim for draw
India vs England 4th Test Live Updates Day 5 IND vs ENG: KL Rahul and Shubman Gill will resume their fight on Day 5 in the Manchester Test against England to keep India alive in the series. The two batters' unbeaten 174-run stand has kept England at bay and revived hopes of a draw in the contest. After losing Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan in the first over, many predicted the match on Day 4 itself, but Gill and Rahul showed grit and resilience to push the match to the final day. The two batters are close to their centuries, but the primary task is to help India avoid More India closed Day 4 at 174 for 2, still 137 runs behind but having stalled England's momentum with a defiant stand. With rain expected on Sunday, the hosts now face a race against time to push for a victory that had seemed well within reach earlier in the day. Earlier, Chris Woakes took two wickets in two balls in the first over of India's second innings to leave them reeling on 0-2 before lunch as the pressure mounted on Gill and Rahul to rebuild the innings. The duo displayed tremendous grit and determination to stage a fightback, keeping India afloat in the contest—though realistically, only a draw appears within reach. Meanwhile, England skipper Ben Stokes, who took five wickets in India's first innings, elected not to bowl after retiring hurt with cramp when batting on Friday. India still trail by 137 runs, but a spirited batting effort has kept alive their hopes of salvaging a draw in Manchester — a result that would be seen as a moral victory given the match situation. England, leading the five-match series 2-1, had earlier piled up their fifth-highest total in Test history to tighten their grip on the game. However, Shubman Gill's composed innings offered India some relief. After a brilliant start to the series as captain with three centuries in his first four innings, the right-hander had slumped with just 34 runs across his last three outings. His return to form couldn't have come at a more crucial moment. Earlier, England began Day 3 firmly in control at 544-7, building on Joe Root's landmark innings that saw him climb to second on the all-time Test run-scorers list with a majestic 150. Ben Stokes, unbeaten on 77 overnight, treated a packed Saturday crowd to an array of aggressive stroke-play. He brought up his century with a well-timed glance to fine leg off Jasprit Bumrah, reaching the milestone in 164 balls. It marked his first Test hundred since his heroic 155 against Australia at Lord's in June 2023, ending a two-year wait for triple figures in red-ball cricket.
