Michael Taaffe earns spot on Allstate Wuerffel Trophy watch list

Over the last week, Longhorns star Michael Taaffe has been busy making headlines. That continued on Thursday when the Texas native earned a spot on the 2025 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy watch list. The award is given annually to the player who exemplifies community service, academic excellence, and athletic achievement. This marks the first time that the Westlake High School product has been linked to the award. Sam Echo was the latest Longhorns player to take home the honors in 2010. While Taaffe has shined on the field, he has also given back to the community. During his college career, Taaffe established Taaffe's Tackles for Fentanyl Awareness. The organization raises awareness about Fentanyl addiction. His work does not stop there, as the talented defensive back has partnered with Crime Stoppers of Houston's Million for Million Campaign that also raises awareness about fentanyl. When Taaffe isn't giving back to the community, he makes life hard for offensive coordinators. He finished the 2024 campaign with 78 tackles and two interceptions. The former walk-on started all 16 games and was stellar in the College Football Playoffs when needed the most. Against Arizona State in the Quarterfinals, Taaffe recorded a career-high ten tackles and two pass breakups. For Longhorns fans, Taaffe's latest honor comes as no surprise. He has been one of the program's best players and also helped those in need. This week, his name also appeared on the Jim Thorpe Award watch list. While his goal is to bring a national title to Austin, he is in the running for additional hardware. The winner of the 2025 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy will be selected by a national voting committee, with input from a fan vote. On December 12th, the winner will be revealed at the Home Depot College Football Awards show. Taaffe is hoping he will hear his name called alongside some of the best players in the nation.

MPs wear Swindon Town shirts in Parliament to support campaign

Swindon MPs wore Swindon Town shirts at the Palace of Westminster to support the 'My Town, My Shirt' campaign. Town launched their new home shirt on July 4 with a campaign alongside TrustSTFC, the Swindon Town Official Supporters Club and the Football Supporters Association. Advertisement The campaign celebrated the diversity of Swindon fans, with photos of supporters from many backgrounds in iconic Swindon locations. MP for Swindon South, Heidi Alexander, and MP for Swindon North, Will Stone, lent their support to the campaign by wearing the new shirt at Parliament. Alexander said: 'People often ask me what best represents Swindon, and I always say that nothing captures its spirit more than the roar from the County Ground on a matchday. I was really proud to bring a part of that into the heart of Westminster this week.' Stone added: 'It's great to be able to bring Swindon Town's new kit to Parliament for the My Town, My Shirt campaign. Football brings communities together from all walks of life, which is why I think it's fantastic that this campaign showcases our amazing fans across Swindon.' Advertisement Nick Coote, TrustSTFC board member, said: "When we talk about belonging, we're talking about creating space for every voice. "This campaign isn't just about football kits – it's about who we are as a town and how football brings us together."

Former Steelers return to Pittsburgh to raise money for cancer research

Former Steelers return to Pittsburgh to raise money for cancer research Former Steelers return to Pittsburgh to raise money for cancer research Former Steelers return to Pittsburgh to raise money for cancer research Two former Steelers were on hand Friday night to help raise money for cancer research at UPMC's Hillman Center. For the past nine years at the Dr. Stanley M. Marks Blood Cancer Research Fund Dinner, the James Conner Courage Award has been given to a blood cancer survivor. Conner was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma 10 years ago when he played at the University of Pittsburgh, before he became a running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Conner, a former patient of Dr. Marks, was the first recipient of the award before it was named after him. All but one of the recipients were at the 10th annual event Friday, held at Acrisure Stadium. They are the faces of courage. "It's just like getting up every day and living your life, you know, not letting anything stop you," said Meghan Milligan, this year's Courage Award recipient. The 35-year-old has been diagnosed with cancer three times and is currently receiving treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma. "Just taking it day by day," she said. She's done it all while competing in several marathons and is the only recipient who is still battling cancer. Conner said courage in cancer was all about battling. "It's been a long road, man, truthfully, a lot of hard work went into it, you just have to learn how to be a fighter," Conner said. "Cancer is kind of a mental fight, so just got to fight hard." Another former Steeler, Merril Hoge, was a special guest at the event. "How I look at courage is when you face something you think you can't face, and you win," Hoge said. He said he was there for a simple reason. "Because 22 years ago, there was a chance I wasn't going to be here," Hoge said. He, too, is a 20-year lymphoma survivor who was a patient of Dr. Marks. Hoge explained that the fundraising for Dr. Marks and others 40 years ago is the reason he's still alive. "My focus has been treating and curing blood cancer, and so the research behind it is so critical," Marks said. The money raised at the dinner will go to UPMC's Hillman Center, where Marks told KDKA-TV it will be used as startup funds for young researchers who would otherwise struggle to find funding. In the years since the fund started, they have raised almost $20 million, Marks said. "I'm humbled, I'm honored really," Dr. Marks said of the large crowd at the event. "I would have never imagined that it would be as successful for this many years." It all benefits people like Milligan, who says it is important to stay positive in the face of obstacles. "Obviously, you have the hard days, but you just go about life, live it to your fullest, even if you're going through a hard time, just enjoy it and live the most you can," Milligan said. KDKA-TV's Bob Pompeani emceed the dinner Friday night, as he has for most of the last decade. He was also recognized with an award for all the time he's spent volunteering.
