Scud produces cracker run
Two weeks after his previous success in a five dog 488m race, Crackerjack Scud faced a much harder task against a full field of quality short-course chasers.
Crackerjack Scud looked up against it from the lemon, 'box five', and went to starting line at big odds but inserted himself into the contest when he landed behind the quick launching Fancy That Fred at the jump.
Fancy That Fred held the front down the back straight but swung wide at the turn, which allowed Crackerjack Scud to burrow through to the lead along the rail.

It was the only opportunity Crackerjack Scud needed and he kicked away to secure the victory in a personal best time of 22.31 and finish three lengths ahead of Fancy That Fred, with Surf The Sun a further half-length behind in third.
Crackerjack Scud improved his record to 10 wins from 28 starts for trainer Lexia Issac.

Ali shines bright in free for all win
Sunset Ali dug deep to grind out a narrow victory in the All Torque Engineering 400m Free For All at Greyhounds WA Mandurah last Friday. The David Hobby-trained chaser notched up his second win in a row but had to work hard to overcome the challenge of Surf The Sun. Sunset Ali began well from box eight but conceded the early advantage to Surf The Sun, which pushed to the head of the field from box six. As they approached the turn, Sunset Ali edged into the lead but couldn't hold it as Surf The Sun regained the front with the benefit of the inside running as they rounded the corner. The pair battled down the home straight and Our Benson also loomed into contention with a surging run along the rail, but Sunset Ali was good enough for one final drive and he powered over the top of Surf The Sun to snatch the win in the last stride. In other news, WA will be represented by Iconic Jet and Iron Works at the Nationals in Queensland later this month. The two greyhounds, both based in Nambeelup and trained by Shayne Williams (Iconic Jet) and Paul Stuart (Iron Works), won their State Championship finals at Cannington last Thursday. Iconic Jet launched beautifully and led all the way to capture the Sprint final (520m) in a slick time of 29.54s, while Iron Works came from near last to power home to a big win in the Distance final (715m). The Nationals will be held at the Q2 Parklands track in Purga, west of Brisnane, on August 30.

Ali strikes in winter sprint
Sunset Ali produced a stunning effort to capture the final of the Winter Sprint (400m) at a huge price at Mandurah last Friday. The David Hobby-trained chaser went to the starting line at $17 on tote from box five despite his come-from-behind victory in his heat the week before. In the trophy decider, Sunset Ali launched beautifully at box rise to immediately spear to the front ahead of Surf The Sun. Sunset Ali held Surf The Sun at bay down the back straight and then kicked away on the turn. Sunset Ali extended his margin in the run to the finish line to score by more than two lengths in 22.31. The victory was the biggest of Sunset Ali's career to date and improved his record to 14 wins from 45 starts.

Hornet heads Hobby charge in Winter Sprint heats
Leading trainer David Hobby has a very strong hand heading into the Winter Sprint final (400m) at Tabtouch Park Mandurah this Friday night. The Nambeelup-based mentor claimed two of the three heats last weekend and will be represented by five runners, more than half the field, in the trophy decider. Hobby's kennel star Sunset Hornet led the charge with an all-the-way effort to win his heat in 22.60. Your local paper, whenever you want it. Sunset Hornet launched beautifully from box eight to capture the front in the early stages and then she held off a late challenge from Fire Lighter to score by three quarters of a length. Hobby went one-two in the following heat, with Sunset Ali overpowering kennelmate Sunset Capone to grab victory in 29.61. Hobby also qualified Sunset Mirage and Sunset Nightjar, which filled the minor positions behind Surf The Sun in their heat clash. The Gary Nelson-trained Surf The Sun clocked the fastest heat time of 29.59 after he bounced to the lead from box one. From than point onwards Surf The Sun didn't give his rivals a look in and he rolled on to take the race by just under two lengths.
