Ilona Maher wants America to fall in love with rugby during Women's World Cup
SUNDERLAND, England (AP) — Ilona Maher's mission at the Women's Rugby World Cup is about more than just winning games. Heading into the United States' tournament opener on Friday, the world's most followed rugby player on social media wants to get more eyeballs on the sport as it ramps up attempts to crack the market in America. 'Not many people know that there's a Women's Rugby World Cup going on, so we try to get as many people as we can to spread that knowledge,' Maher said ahead of the match against host England in the World Cup curtain-raiser in Sunderland. 'We want the fans in America to see us play here because we've got a World Cup there in eight years and we need to start building for that.' Rugby authorities see America as a vital new market for the sport. The United States will stage the men's Rugby World Cup in 2031 and the women's tournament in 2033. The presence of Maher is key to attracting attention on rugby in the U.S., given she has 5.2 million followers on Instagram and 3.6 million on TikTok — platforms on which she promotes body positivity. The 29-year-old Vermont native believes she and her teammates are 'changing the game on and off the field a lot.' 'This is a time where women's rugby is in a state where it could grow massively,' she said, 'and I do believe this team is at the forefront with how we present ourselves and people's perception of us.' Maher certainly stands out, having been named as the best breakthrough athlete at the ESPYs last month. In an interview with the BBC ahead of the World Cup, she said she has been approached by the WWE — joking that her ring name would be 'Maher-vellous' if she ever became a wrestler — and that she'd love to get into acting. First, though, she wants to deliver at the World Cup, starting with the match in front of 40,000 spectators against England, the tournament favorite, in the north of the country. A star in rugby sevens, in which she won a bronze medal with the U.S. team at the Paris Olympics last year, Maher also had a three-month stint at English club Bristol in the 15 players-a-team format at the start of 2025. 'I think it's so cool,' Maher said, 'that we're up here, so far away from maybe where rugby union is big, and yet we're getting 40,000 people out to a game.' The Americans also will play Australia and Samoa in Pool A at the World Cup. ___ AP rugby:

Pitt is hoping a little continuity can go a long way after second-half collapse last season
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pat Narduzzi girded himself for a steady stream of knocks at his door during the offseason with players popping in to tell the longtime Pittsburgh coach they were considering entering the transfer portal. The stream, however, turned out to be only a trickle, tangible proof to Narduzzi that the family-like culture he's built during his decade-plus on the job has become part of the firmament. Quarterback Eli Holstein stuck around after an occasionally dynamic, injury-marred freshman season. Do-everything running back Desmond Reid and linebacker Kyle Louis, too. It's not that they weren't necessarily approached. It's just that it never reached the point where they found themselves sitting across from Narduzzi to have a potentially difficult conversation. 'I have a lot of meetings in my office, but it gets real when they're there,' Narduzzi said. 'But that tells you there was not even a thought of it.' Continuity is hardly a guarantee anymore. Pitt seems to have it at the moment. The trick for the Panthers will be having it mean something by avoiding the kind of Jekyll/Hyde season they endured last fall, when a 7-0 start morphed into an 0-6 finish, though only three of those losses were by more than five points. 'If I'm a fan I'm going, 'Shoot, every game is going down to the fourth quarter, and it's a game of inches and you've got to win those inches and sometimes you do and sometimes you don't,'' Narduzzi said. If Pitt wants to end up on the right side of those inches this fall, it will need Holstein to stay healthy after missing three entire games and parts of two others during the Panthers' second-half swoon. 'Our kids played their tails off and gave it all they did based on the health that we had on our football team,' Narduzzi said. 'It's hard when your starting quarterback is not out there. Eli was 7-1 as a starter and then you're bouncing around and it's just different.' Narduzzi believes Holstein is 'far beyond' where he was at a year ago, when he pitched in a battle with Nate Yarnell for the starting job. It's firmly his now, and there's optimism that the hiccups in offensive coordinator Kade Bell's system have been smoothed out. 'There's nothing better than you're going into the season knowing what Eli has done, what kind of football player he is,' he said. 'We're not sitting there wondering what's going to happen on game day. I think we all have a pretty good idea.' Dynami c Des Reid — all 5-feet-8 of him — was a revelation after transferring from Western Carolina. Piling up 1,545 yards from scrimmage and nine touchdowns and adding another on a punt return will do that. Reid believes he's just getting started. One of the reasons he remains up for whatever in 2025. '(I) can't be like a regular running back,' Reid said. 'I've got to do everything. Shoot, last year I didn't really showcase everything I could do for real. I didn't really play every game. This year, that's my main focus, trying to play every game, be there for the team, showcase what I can do to help the team win.' Louis eager to deliver on the hype The list of defensive players the Panthers have sent to the NFL during Narduzzi's tenure is long. Louis figures to add to the list whenever he's done, though the second-team All-American is hardly in a rush to get to the next level following a season in which he had 16 tackles for loss, seven sacks and four picks, returning one for a touchdown. 'He has a great ability to key the football, find the hole, and hit the guy with the ball,' Narduzzi said, later adding, 'We want Kyle Louis to go to the ball. The ball is the main thing.' The schedule The Panthers open the season on Aug. 30 by facing crosstown rival Duquesne for the first time since 1939. Pitt's nonconference slate includes 75-mile trip south to Morgantown to face West Virginia in the 'Backyard Brawl.' No. 6 Notre Dame visits Acrisure Stadium on Nov. 15. The ACC schedule includes trips to both Florida State (Oct. 11) and No. 10 Miami (Nov. 29). The tone for Pitt's season will likely be set by how it navigates a two-week stretch in which it welcomes both Louisville (Sept. 27) and Boston College (Oct. 4). The Panthers lost to both a year ago. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. AP college football: and

New quarterback, high hopes: What to expect from the Louisville Cardinals this season
The Louisville Cardinals have had enough success in coach Jeff Brohm's first two seasons that newcomers to the program can't wait to do their part knowing the high expectations for this program. 'This feels a little different,' said defensive lineman Clev Lubin, who had 9 1/2 sacks in one season at Coastal Carolina. 'Definitely a little bit more excitement for this year looking at what we have as a group and the success this program has had the last few years.' The Cardinals went 9-4 last season with a win at Clemson, and all four losses came by seven points or less. Two of those came to Notre Dame and SMU, both College Football Playoff teams. They start this season picked to finish fifth in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Brohm has 10 starters back and a quarterback among his nine portal additions. The challenge is keeping the offense clicking after the Cardinals ranked eighth scoring 36.5 points a game last season and 13th with 449.2 yards per game. New quarterback Louisville has to replace Tyler Shough, who threw for 3,195 yards and 23 touchdowns before being taken 40th overall by New Orleans in the NFL draft. His successor is a portal addition. Miller Moss came to the Cardinals after three years at Southern California. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Moss completed 71.7% of his passes with the Trojans, and he threw for 2,555 yards with 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions last season in nine starts. That included a win over LSU. Moss threw six TD passes in a Holiday Bowl win over Louisville in December 2023 in his first collegiate start. 'A quarterback that likes to throw the ball, that's what you need in this offense,' Louisville wide receiver Chris Bell said of Moss. Brown's back Brohm has Isaac Brown back for his sophomore season after the running back set a school freshman record previously held by Lamar Jackson. Brown ran for 1,173 yards and 11 touchdowns, and he also led the ACC averaging 7.1 yards per carry. Brown played all 13 games and started the final eight last season. Pass catchers Bell is back at wide receiver after ranking second on the Cardinals with 43 catches for 737 yards. Louisville also has Caullin Lacy, who redshirted last season in his first season with the Cards. The 23-year-old Lacy ranked fifth nationally in 2023 with 1,316 yards receiving with South Alabama. They are being coached by Deion Branch, a Super Bowl MVP promoted to receivers coach at his alma mater in February. The schedule Louisville has three straight home games starting Aug. 30 with Eastern Kentucky. The Cardinals host Virginia on Oct. 4, Boston College on Oct. 25, California on Nov. 8 and the regular season finale with Kentucky on Nov. 29. The Cardinals' biggest game in Louisville comes Nov. 14 against defending ACC champ and fourth-ranked Clemson. The road slate features Pittsburgh on Sept. 27, No. 10 Miami on Oct. 17, Virginia Tech on Nov. 1 and No. 16 SMU on Nov. 22. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season.
