
Barka 4 desalination plant sets global benchmarks

At the heart of Barka IV's impressive efficiency and environmental stewardship lies its advanced technological infrastructure, meticulously designed to optimise every stage of the desalination process. The plant's journey begins with a sophisticated seawater intake system, a crucial first step that sets it apart in terms of both scale and ecological consideration. Seawater is sourced via two independent intake towers, each located 1.5 kilometres from the plant, ensuring a robust and reliable supply.
A key innovation here is the maintenance of a low intake velocity of 0.1 meters per second, a deliberate measure to minimise impact on marine life. Further safeguarding the rich biodiversity of Oman's coastal waters, the intake is equipped with 100mm bar screens and supplemented by air bubble curtains, effectively preventing jellyfish and other marine organisms from entering the system. This commitment to environmental protection at the very outset underscores a holistic approach to sustainable operation, a vital aspect for any large-scale industrial facility situated in ecologically sensitive areas.
Following intake, the water undergoes a rigorous pretreatment phase, critical for protecting the delicate and costly Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes that form the core of the desalination process. Barka IV employs state-of-the-art technologies including Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) systems to remove algae and suspended solids, and 16 Dual Media Gravity Filters (DMGF) that further eliminate suspended particles while optimizing energy consumption through gravity-based operation. The DAF system, in particular, plays a pivotal role in preventing membrane fouling, directly contributing to the longevity and efficiency of the RO stage.
The true technological marvel and the most important part of the Barka IV plant is its Reverse Osmosis (RO) system, coupled with cutting-edge Energy Recovery Devices (ERD). This combination is what truly sets Barka IV apart as one of the world's most energy-efficient large-scale desalination plants, boasting a specific energy consumption of less than 3 kWh per cubic meter.
The plant is equipped with 20,000 high-performance RO membranes that effectively separate salt from seawater, operating at a pressure of 60 bar. Prior to the RO membranes, cartridge filters (CF) ensure that particles as small as 5 microns are removed, safeguarding the integrity and performance of the membranes.
The integration of ERDs, achieving an impressive 97% recovery rate, is a game-changer. These devices recapture significant amounts of pressure energy from the concentrated brine stream, dramatically reducing the overall energy demand for the high-pressure RO pumps. This energy efficiency not only translates into substantial operational cost savings but also significantly lowers the plant's carbon footprint, aligning with global efforts towards climate action.
Beyond the core desalination process, Barka IV's commitment to delivering high-quality potable water is solidified in its remineralisation process. Five limestone filters are utilised to increase the alkalinity and hardness of the desalinated water, ensuring it meets stringent international drinking water standards. This crucial step is further supported by two permeate storage tanks acting as buffers, guaranteeing continuous supply and consistent water quality for consumers.
Finally, the entire operation is meticulously managed from a Smart Control Room utilising Veolia's sophisticated Hubgrade digitalisation tools. With over 3,000 pieces of equipment connected to a centralized control system, a dedicated operations team provides continuous 24/7 monitoring of plant performance and production. This digital integration ensures over 95% availability, allowing for real-time adjustments and predictive maintenance, thereby maximising operational efficiency and minimising downtime. This smart management system, powered by AI, embodies the future of industrial facility management, ensuring the plant's robust and reliable performance for years to come.

New park in Jabal Akhdar to enhance tourism potential
Muscat: The Jabal Akhdar Park in the Wilayat of Jabal Akhdar in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate will open on Monday, marking a qualitative addition to the wilayat's tourism and entertainment infrastructure. The park is part of a package of development projects being implemented to enhance Jabal Akhdar's status as a unique tourist destination at the national and regional levels. The park project, located in the Seih Qatna area, is part of efforts to develop public spaces and improve quality of life. It is expected to become a major attraction for visitors and residents year-round, thanks to its integrated facilities that cater to the needs of various age groups. The project aligns with the Oman Vision 2040, which aims to transform the governorate's natural and cultural assets into sustainable development opportunities with a direct economic and social impact. Sheikh Sultan bin Mansour Al Ghafili, Wali of Jabal Akhdar, , affirmed that the park represents an important addition to the tourism landscape in the governorate. He pointed out that the project is being implemented at a cost exceeding OMR1.1 million, and covers an area of 20,000 square metres. It includes integrated recreational and service facilities, including a 1,000-square-metre children's play area, sports paths, and investment areas containing a café, a shop, and an area for electric games, in addition to prayer rooms and restrooms for men and women. He added that the park includes an open multi-use theatre and green spaces covering an area of 5,000 square metres, which were prepared by planting 150 trees and 400 shrubs, in addition to a vegetation cover that enhances the aesthetics of the site, to be an integrated entertainment destination for family activities and community events. He noted that the project reflects the keenness of the Wilayat, in cooperation with the Office of the Governor of Al Dakhiliyah, to develop facilities that meet sustainability standards, support small and medium enterprises, provide job opportunities, and stimulate commercial activities. He emphasised that these initiatives, in coordination with the Office of the Governor of Al Dakhiliyah, are part of a comprehensive development drive that takes into account the principles of innovation, sustainability, and the promotion of Omani identity. He noted that the next phase will witness additional initiatives targeting investment in ecotourism, smart agriculture, and community services, ensuring comprehensive and balanced development. For his part, Eng. Mohammed bin Ali Al Wardi, Director of the Projects Department at Al Dakhiliyah Municipality, explained that the park project is an extension of the governorate's vision to develop public facilities and improve the urban environment. He emphasised that the celebration square in Seih Qatna, which was inaugurated last July, represents a model for the cultural and tourism infrastructure in the governorate. He added that new projects currently being implemented are part of an integrated plan to develop the Wilayat of Jabal Akhdar as a sustainable tourism centre, combining the preservation of the natural environment with the development of public facilities, and enhancing the visitor experience by providing integrated services, thus consolidating the governorate's position on the tourism and investment map of the Sultanate of Oman.

Oman announces new agricultural projects for Dhahirah
Ibri – Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning (MHUP) has announced four new investment opportunities for usufruct land in Dhahirah governorate, covering a total of 16 hectares for plant and animal projects. The opportunities include citrus cultivation on 4 hectares and fig cultivation on another 4 hectares in the Al Buwairda area of Yanqul, livestock breeding and seasonal fodder cultivation on 4 hectares in the Qarn Kabsh area of Ibri, and palm cultivation with date production on 4 hectares in the Al Ghuwail area of Ibri. According to the ministry, the projects aim to strengthen the agricultural sector and attract investors to ventures that support Oman Vision 2040's economic diversification goals. Sites were selected based on soil quality, water availability, and market demand to ensure long-term viability. Details of the opportunities and usufruct terms are available on the Tatweer platform, with applications open to local and foreign investors. Preference will be given to proposals that adopt modern irrigation systems, sustainable farming practices, and value-added production to improve competitiveness in local and export markets. The Ministry of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources, in cooperation with MHUP and the private sector, is working to allocate land and develop investment plans to enhance food security and sustainable agricultural growth. Dhahirah has been identified as a promising hub for agricultural expansion due to its fertile land, favourable climate for fruit cultivation, and proximity to regional markets. Oman Film Society trains young filmmakers in AI-driven storytelling
Muscat – Oman Film Society has concluded a nine-day specialised workshop held in collaboration with Youth Centre aimed at equipping Omani youth with advanced skills in using artificial intelligence in filmmaking. Titled 'Experimenting with AI Filmmaking Skills', the workshop ran from July 20 to August 14 in three governorates – Muscat, North Sharqiyah and North Batinah – enabling aspiring filmmakers nationwide to participate. Over 75 young men and women took part in the sessions led by filmmaker and trainer Abdulaziz al Abri. Speaking to Muscat Daily, Abri said the training covered scriptwriting, visual composition, and the use of AI tools to generate and enhance cinematic content. Participants completed five practical projects, applying their skills to real-world scenarios. 'This workshop across three governorates was a platform to unleash the energies of talented and ambitious young people. The results achieved in just nine days are a source of pride and optimism,' he said. Abri noted that many participants adapted quickly to AI tools, producing work that demonstrated both creativity and technical proficiency. 'Integrating AI into filmmaking is no longer a luxury but an essential step to remain competitive in the global film industry,' he added. Oman Film Society stated that the initiative supports Oman Vision 2040's focus on innovation, youth empowerment and creative industries as drivers of economic diversification. The society plans to expand AI-based training, with future modules in animation, virtual production and digital editing. Industry observers believe such exposure will boost local content production and position Oman as a regional hub for innovative storytelling in the Gulf.
