Slain Umlazi teenager's alleged killer turns against co-accused
Sifundo Bongani Bhengu, 39, and Bongani Jali, 24, are charged with housebreaking with intent to steal, robbery with aggravating circumstances and the murder of the teen. They pleaded not guilty.
Ngcobo, 17, a grade 11 pupil at the school in Greyville, was found bound and gagged with a deep wound to her chest.
Bhengu's legal representative Vicky Nattar, who after cross-examining Aphiwe's father Mondli Ngcobo on Tuesday, presented his client's version of events which pinned Jali as the main culprit.
This is in contrast to Jali's affidavit last week in which he said Bhengu — who lived opposite the Ngcobo family — had robbed and killed the teenager.
Bhengu said shortly after midnight on May 28 he met Jali with his friend whom he identified as Bruino. He said the pair had asked him for money and he bought food for them. Jali had alleged smoked crystal meth while Bhengu smoked Mandrax. Jali wanted to borrow money as he wanted to fix his Toyota Avanza and also buy tyres.
He said Jali then hatched a plan to get the money by breaking into the Ngcobo house, killing Aphiwe and robbing her.

'It could have been my child': community fumes over Joburg mom who gave 'drugs' to young son
A woman and three men from Newclare appeared briefly in the Johannesburg magistrate's court on Monday facing charges of attempted murder and child abuse after a viral video showed the woman's toddler being coerced to smoke 'a harmful substance'. The case was postponed to Thursday, to allow for verification of alternative addresses submitted by the defence. The video, which was shared on social media and led to the mother's arrest on July 29, saw the woman and her friends getting the four-year-old boy to light and smoke what appeared to be a Mandrax and dagga-laced bottleneck pipe. 'We cannot say it is drugs at this point, the investigations are ongoing. It is safe to say the child was placed in danger and that is why the state has removed the child to a place of safety,' NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said outside court. The NPA intends to oppose the accused's release on bail, citing the sensitivity of the matter and the victim's age. Mjonondwane asked the public to stop sharing the footage. 'It is dismaying that such videos are circulating. We have taken necessary steps and appeal to the public to stop sharing them. The victim is a minor, we must protect his dignity and the integrity of the investigation.' A woman who identified herself as a relative of one of the accused expressed heartbreak over the incident. Despite her ties to the accused, she said she chose to attend the hearing in solidarity with the victim. 'I am here because it could have been my child too. I am also a mother. 'In our community drugs are a huge problem, but nobody listens to us,' she told TimesLIVE. 'We as coloured people do not get recognised by government. We cry out when shootings happen, when kids are lost to drugs and no one hears us. Now suddenly everyone cares, but where were they when we were fighting this battle alone?' Community activist Melissa Davids said: 'We want justice and we want it as in yesterday. 'The justice system is failing us, too many children are being abused and nothing happens.' Davids said she receives constant calls about child abuse cases that do not make headlines or reach social workers. 'On my way here, I got a call about a mother who tried to give up her child because she could not take care of them. She said [the department of] social development turned her away.' Davids believes there is systemic neglect of coloured communities, citing unemployment, drugs and lack of social services. 'Our people have nothing. That is why so many kids are exposed to drugs and violence. The government ignores us until it is too late,' she said.

Attempted murder charge for Joburg mom who gave 'drugs' to young son
A mother from Newclare who was seen on video getting her young son to light a 'drug pipe' and smoke it with her, appeared in the Johannesburg magistrate's court on Thursday. The video went viral on Tuesday and sparked outrage, leading to her arrest later that night by the Joburg Metro Police Department. She was in the dock with three men alleged to have been in the room with her during the incident. Two were arrested on the same night as her and the other suspect was apprehended on Wednesday. They are charged with attempted murder and child abuse for exposing the child to a harmful substance. They intend to apply for Legal Aid lawyers to defend them. The case was remanded to August 4. The child is four years old, the court heard. Initially, he was believed to be aged three. The child was taken to a place of safety after being medically assessed in hospital. 'The video depicted the child lighting drugs in a bottle neck for his mother, who then encouraged him to smoke, all in the presence of other adults,' the JMPD said earlier this week. After receiving a tip-off on her whereabouts, the JMPD said its officers located the mother, who matched the description from the video. 'When questioned, she identified two other individuals present in the video, including the person who recorded it. All three suspects confessed to using Mandrax and admitted to filming the incident. Their cellphones were confiscated as evidence.' Police spokesperson Brig Brenda Muridili said on Wednesday members of the Johannesburg family violence and child abuse unit (FCS) were investigating the case. 'The FCS in Gauteng has 22 units strategically located in the province servicing 146 police stations. There are at least 66 detectives on standby from FCS after hours to attend to cases related to their mandate,' she said.

Hercules cable theft suspects arrested after alert resident tips off police
An armed robbery at a storage site west of Pretoria has led to arrests, after community vigilance and a rapid response from both police and private security helped intercept stolen goods. Three suspects are in police custody after stealing about R1.5-million worth of cables from a municipal storage depot in Hercules. The robbery took place on July 28, when four armed men stormed the depot and held the four on-duty security officers at gunpoint. The security officers were tied up, their mobile phones confiscated, and they were taken to the back of the building, where two of the suspects guarded them. 'The remaining two suspects moved to the front of the building and were later joined by additional accomplices. Two trucks arrived on the scene and began loading electrical cables, with an estimated value of R1.5-million,' said SAPS spokesperson, Captain Johan van Dyk. Van Dyk said thanks to a vigilant community member, who saw the suspicious activity and immediately alerted the Hercules SAPS, two patrol vehicles, along with private security guards, responded swiftly and began searching for the trucks. One of the trucks, accompanied by a silver BMW, was located in Bremer Street. As SAPS officers intercepted the vehicles, the suspects tried to flee on foot. A chase ensued, resulting in the successful arrest of three suspects. After finding and searching the truck, police recovered a large quantity of electrical and copper cables, as well as three pairs of gloves. A search of the BMW yielded seven Mandrax tablets and false number plates. The arrested suspects have been charged with business robbery and possession of suspected stolen property. An investigation is continuing to identify and trace other suspects. Ward 1 councillor Leon Kruyshaar believes the suspects fled into a nearby informal settlement when intercepted by the police, and that the perpetrators are members of a larger syndicate responsible for cable theft in the area. 'As you know, cable theft is quite a continuous issue in our area. They have been stealing cables for the longest time, and not only have they been stealing from our ports, but they've also been stealing the cables underground,' said Kruyshaar. 'There are trenches they dig in the middle of the night and steal them [cables]. Overhead cables as well, the theft of municipal infrastructure is just out of hand in our area, and an arrest like this is exactly what we need. 'The criminals need to know that we are not just going to sit back; eventually, they'll be caught. It takes time, it takes a lot of investigations and so forth, but they are curbing this. 'Probably not at the rate that we want, because the price of copper is currently at R170 a kilogram, so the theft will continue, but we'll do everything we can to stop this.' Kruyshaar expressed his gratitude for the authorities' efforts, as he said that cable theft is an issue that won't stop in his ward.
