Hulu Selangor cops confirm 19-year-old suspect arrested over alleged sexual assault in Batang Kali mosque
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 21 — Police have reportedly arrested a 19-year-old suspect who allegedly sexually assaulted a girl at a mosque in Batang Kali, Selangor, this morning.
Free Malaysia Today cited Hulu Selangor police chief Ahmad Faizal Tahrim saying the youth will be brought to the Kuala Kubu Bharu magistrates' court tomorrow for a remand application.
The case is being investigated under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and caning if found guilty.
Earlier, Ahmad Faizal was quoted confirming that the police received a report on the incident at Masjid Jamek Sungai Masin in Batang Kali, Selangor.
The incident came to light after CCTV footage went viral, showing a man sneaking into the women's prayer area of the mosque before grabbing the girl while she was performing her morning prayers behind a congregation of women.
The footage has sparked outrage online, with netizens urging police to swiftly arrest the suspect and conduct a thorough investigation.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 — Police have summoned 42 individuals to assist in the ongoing probe into a controversial front-page illustration in Sin Chew Daily that omitted the crescent moon from the Malaysian flag. Free Malaysia Today reported Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay as saying the number of people called in to give statements is expected to grow. 'Investigations are ongoing and 40 police reports have been lodged. We have also summoned 42 witnesses (to give their statements),' he reportedly said today. The investigation centres on Sin Chew Daily's April 15 edition, which featured an image of the Jalur Gemilang with a missing crescent moon — an error the publication later described as a 'technical mistake'. The publication's chief editor and deputy chief sub-editor were detained last night in connection with the probe. Both have since been released on police bail. Police are investigating the case under Section 3(1)(c) of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963 and Section 4(1)(b) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984. Sin Chew issued an apology shortly after the backlash and suspended both editors from duty pending the outcome of investigations.

Saifuddin Nasution reportedly sends legal letter over Facebook user's claims
KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 — Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has reportedly issued a letter of demand to a social media user over allegedly defamatory claims about the former's role in Kedah Darul Aman Football Club (KDA FC). Free Malaysia Today (FMT) reported today that the social media user, identified as Zubair Ismail, had alleged in a March 26 Facebook post that Saifuddin instructed the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the Inland Revenue Board to investigate the club, which scared off potential sponsors. Zubair was also said to have accused Saifuddin of trying to 'save' the team to boost his public image and later posted a related TikTok video. Through law firm SN Nair & Partners, Saifuddin — who is Kedah Pakatan Harapan chief — reportedly demanded an apology within three working days or warned of legal action. 'Your careless, malicious, and baseless actions have left our client with no choice but to take legal action to defend his reputation and integrity,' the letter reportedly read. The letter reportedly also claimed Zubair's posts had damaged Saifuddin's reputation, especially among football fans. To note, Saifuddin has been engaging with KDA FC, which has reportedly not paid out salaries to its staff and players for 10 months. Bernama reported last month that Saifuddin presented the team with RM200,000 that was raised with the support of three NGOs through a Hari Raya fund-raiser.

Appellate court denies bid by three individuals, company to reclaim RM3.2m in seized assets tied to ex-Johor exco member
PUTRAJAYA, March 26 — Three individuals and a company linked to former Johor executive council member Datuk Abdul Latif Bandi have failed in their bid to review the seizure of RM3.2 million in assets. A three-member Court of Appeal panel, chaired by Justice Hashim Hamzah, ruled that public policy requires finality in judgments and that reviews are only permitted in exceptional cases, such as breaches of natural justice or miscarriages of justice, according to a report published in Free Malaysia Today. The court found that the applicants were challenging the merits of a previous Court of Appeal decision, rather than raising a valid ground for review. The bench also included Justices Wong Kian Kheong and Noorin Badaruddin. The appeal stemmed from a ruling on July 17, 2024, when a separate Court of Appeal panel dismissed appeals from six individuals, including Latif, his son Ahmad Fauzan Hatim, real estate consultant Amir Shariffuddin Abd Raub, Mazita Mahmod, Hartini Jalani, and JLA Motorsports Sdn Bhd. During today's proceedings, lawyer Abdul Rahim Ali informed the court that Latif wished to withdraw from the case, while his son did not participate as an applicant. The prosecution was represented by deputy public prosecutors Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin, Zander Lim, and Asraf Tahir. The case dates back to May 2019, when the Sessions Court dismissed the prosecution's forfeiture application, ordering the return of the seized assets. However, the High Court overturned this ruling in December 2021, concluding that the properties were linked to illegal proceeds. The seized assets included 20 luxury vehicles, such as a Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG, Bentley Continental GT Coupe, Land Rover Sport, Nissan Skyline, Toyota Vellfire, Honda HRV, and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, as well as branded watches, handbags, jewellery, and foreign currency in multiple denominations. In a separate case, Latif, his son Fauzan, and Amir Shariffuddin were acquitted of corruption and money laundering charges by the Johor Baru Sessions Court in 2022, a decision upheld by the High Court in 2023. While the prosecution dropped its appeal against Latif's acquittal, proceedings against Fauzan and Amir Shariffuddin are ongoing.
