ESPN: NBA Executive believes OKC Thunder's next great rival is against CBA
After winning an NBA championship, the Oklahoma City Thunder will enter the 2025-26 season as a popular pick to repeat. They had one of the greatest years ever with a historic 68-14 regular-season record and an all-time best point differential built up with frequent blowouts. The celebrations didn't stop after their parade. The Thunder signed Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren contract extensions that'll keep them together for the rest of the 2020s decade. Besides some bottom of the depth chart changes, OKC will run it back with the same group. While some NBA teams spent their offseason upgrading their rosters, it sounds like the rest of the league is more interested in seeing how the Thunder can keep their roster together once the payroll dramatically increases starting in the 2026-27 season when Gilgeous-Alexander, Williams and Holmgren take up around 85% of the payroll. In ESPN's latest "The Hoop Collective" podcast episode, Brian Windhorst revealed an interesting anecdote from an NBA executive. The decision-maker told the media personality in a tongue-in-cheek manner that the next great rivalry will be how the Thunder handles the CBA with their impending expensive roster. 'I was talking to an NBA executive the other day. He goes, 'What are the great rivalries of the game today?' And I'm like, 'Boy, is this an August question. I need to come up with something," Windhorst said. "Then he's like, 'Well, I know what the next great rivalry is in the NBA… The Thunder vs. the CBA.' That adds to the growing concerns that the Thunder may not be able to keep their roster together. The rest of the NBA will soon circle OKC like vultures to slowly see the NBA champion's window close. But their imaginations may be more colorful than reality. Of course, the CBA isn't what the Thunder should be worried about. They're set there. Instead, it'll be the possible cap space limitations like a repeater's tax, along with the First and Second Aprons. Serving as a hard cap, the Aprons have allowed teams to spread the league's talent across teams. We've seen that affect some teams already. The LA Clippers didn't bring back Paul George because of it. The Boston Celtics have shed Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday this offseason to save some money during their gap year next season. For the Thunder, they're better set up than anybody else to fight the Second Apron limitations. They've already won a championship, which means this group has accomplished its goal already. And while the rest of the roster might change over time, the Big 3 being under contract for the next five-plus years gives you enough wiggle room to remain a contender as long as Williams and Holmgren take the next step in their development. And then there's the pile of draft picks the Thunder sit on. They have the chance to get premium draft picks simultaneously with deep playoff runs. That's thanks to other teams gifting them picks. It's already happened twice in recent years. They were given back-to-back top-15 picks from the Houston Rockets and Miami Heat these last two drafts. Of course, championship windows don't last forever. The Thunder will need to make some tough roster decisions next offseason with some of their role players. And there's no guarantee they win another championship because of other factors outside of their control. But the NBA executive's opinion, even if it was just a joke, isn't a reflection of reality. As long as Gilgeous-Alexander, Williams and Holmgren remain healthy, they'll always be in the title conversations. That's how important it is to have multiple All-NBA-esque players on your roster.

Here's when the OKC Thunder will release their entire 2025-26 regular season schedule
It looks like the Oklahoma City Thunder won't have to wait much longer to fill out their calendar. With Opening Night and Christmas matchups already reported, the NBA is set to release its complete 2025-26 regular season schedule on Thursday, Aug. 14. The Atlanta Hawks posted on social media that their schedule will be dropped on that day. Which means the other 29 NBA teams will follow suit. That date is similar to the previous two years, when the full schedules were released on Aug. 15 and Aug. 17, both on Thursday. As is tradition, the Thunder will kick off the 2025-26 season as the reigning NBA champions. They will host the Houston Rockets Opening Night on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Kevin Durant will attend OKC's pregame ceremony of the banner drop and rings being handed out. It will also be the first game in the new NBC broadcast era. After being snubbed last year, the Thunder are back on the Christmas Day slate. They will host the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday, Dec. 25. The NBA promotes the holiday as one of its biggest days of the regular season. It only made sense to have the NBA champion on it. Until then, thought, expect regular-season schedule news to slowly trickle in until Aug. 14. Special regular-season matchups — such as OKC's 2025 NBA Cup group games — could be announced sooner in the next few days. The Thunder already know their opponents for the in-season tournament. It's now about when they'll play them. In the driest part of the NBA calendar, August's schedule release day is an oasis for the two-month snoozefest. The Thunder will enter the 2025-26 season as a popular pick to repeat as NBA champions. They're running it back with mostly the same roster that just had one of the greatest seasons ever.

Stephen Curry, LeBron James to renew rivalry on opening night of NBA season
NBA fans will not have to wait long for another installment of Stephen Curry vs. LeBron James. Curry and the Golden State Warriors will travel to Los Angeles to play James and the Lakers on the Opening Night (Oct. 21) of the NBA season, a league source confirmed. The Warriors also will host Klay Thompson and the Dallas Mavericks as part of the Christmas Day schedule. Curry, 37, and James, 40, have engaged in a long-running rivalry, of course, dating to James' days with Cleveland. Their teams met in the NBA Finals in four consecutive seasons, with the Warriors earning the championship in 2015, '17 and '18, and the Cavaliers erasing a 3-1 deficit to win in 2016. More recently, James and the Lakers beat Golden State in a play-in game in 2021 and in the Western Conference semifinals in 2023. Last season, the Lakers won three of four games against the Warriors, including a 115-113 victory at Chase Center on Christmas Day. Golden State's win came April 3 in Los Angeles, amid the Warriors' late-season surge into the playoffs. Curry scored 37 points and James had 33 in that contest. Curry and James also teamed up on the U.S. men's national team in 2024, leading the Americans to the gold medal at the Paris Olympics. The Warriors have become a Christmas Day fixture in the Curry era — this year's game will mark their 13th consecutive appearance on the holiday. They're 6–6 in that stretch, dating to 2013. Dallas offers an intriguing opponent beyond the presence of Thompson, the longtime Warriors guard. The Mavericks also feature former Lakers center Anthony Davis and No. 1 overall draft pick Cooper Flagg, last season's national college player of the year at Duke. The rest of the Christmas Day schedule, according to ESPN's Shams Charania: Cavaliers at Knicks, Spurs at Thunder, Rockets at Lakers and Timberwolves at Nuggets. Golden State's opening-night appearance Oct. 21 will be the nightcap of a doubleheader on NBC. The first game will showcase Kevin Durant and Houston going to Oklahoma City to play the reigning champion Thunder, per Charania.
